I RESPECT DREAM THEATHER A LOT AND I THINK THEY ARE ONE OF THE BEST PROGRESSIVE BANDS EVER AND WAHT PORTNOY SAID IS VEY TRUE BECAUSE HE IS A A TRUE MUSICIAN ROCK STARS MOST OF THEM ARE PATHETIC THEY LOOSE THE POINT OF WHY THEY ARE IN A BAND FOR MAKING MUSIC!!!!!
Ha! your guys are not all angles in the past, but its all part of the story of learning who you are and what you can handle, moderation babe,it is a way to peace.
The best band in the world, composed of the most talented musicians ever... Not only that, but these legends are good down-to-earth people.. and we all know Mike's the "naughtiest" of the band, but even he has changed his ways, (aside from appearance =P) and is WAY more caring than a majority of musicians in various genres. 2 thumbs up, since I only have 2 thumbs.
I agree with Triumphforks, I respect these guys so much for the way they are. They don't mess around on their wives, and I also admire Mike for being clean & sober all these years.
I think that one interesting element of DT is the efect of Portnoy's life expirience on the band and how he applys his leasons to his music( in my opinion). How he sang about his drinking problem and everything.
This is one of the reasons I have so much respect for Mike and the rest of the guys in DT. They're so level headed and not full of themselves but yet capable of incredible musical things us mere mortals could only dream of :)
Thats why DT is so great, they are healthy guys that play incredible music. It's hard to find bands this good and this stable among it's members, they don't need anything to create their music, it's all them. long live DT!!!
3 minute songs are better for the radio. If I'm driving I can sit in my car and wait for a 3 minute song to end. People may start to wonder if I'm sitting in my car for 20 minutes beating on a drum set that isn't there.
Though, DT has a few shorter songs. "As I Am" is 3:35 and is one of my favorites. Not one of Portnoy's best, but it's an all around awesome song with a sick guitar riff.
I knew Mike was a recovered alcoholic, but I never pegged him as a drugger. Was it just pot, or something heavier?
Either way, good to hear that he's sober now. Those things are only good in moderation, so if that's not an option (and I personally know people for whom it isn't), it's best to keep away from it.
you know, that's in part true, on the other hand, i guess you never stop that fight, he probably still fights againts temptation, or to stay away from it, so i say, once a recovered always a fighter
Yes and no. He didn't feel the obsession to build up a huge-ass kit just because he had to.
I can somewhat relate to what he was aiming for with the big kit. Having many different details and sounds in one kit to be more creative and diverse.
thanks mike, i been sober for 8 years too, i´m a musician and thanks mike´s lyrics (the glass prison, this dying soul, the root of all evil, repentance, etc) i can understand my recovery program much better, because that is my lenguage... music!!! no alcohol, no drugs, just rocknroll for living. i´m happy merried too. this is a better way of life for us!!!
And he used to be an alcoholic but shortly after SFAM came out he went into AA and has been straight ever since. hence the 12 part, 5 song epic. The Glass Prison Suite (The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Root of All Evil, Repentance and the 5th is to be discovered).
"...a heavy drugger"... He just never struck me as a drughead. I mean his play is so technical and precise you know. And I've been around "those ppl" enough to know what they look and seem like. I can't even picture him smoking pot.
dude, this guy is amazing. Great role model, good character. I like how he doesn't get into the scene of most dirty rockers. It's not needed. You can live an amazing life without that crap

Wow, the irony is that his OCD, which nearly destroyed him, would be the same condition that saved him.

and not sell platinum albums is beyond me.

lol, its because people cant undestand DT's music they just want 3 min songs rather that 20 min epics that thell a whole story

Doubt I'd hear you. Music would be too loud.
Though, DT has a few shorter songs. "As I Am" is 3:35 and is one of my favorites. Not one of Portnoy's best, but it's an all around awesome song with a sick guitar riff.

Eh, what? As I Am is almost 8 minutes long.
NecronChaos 2 years ago
There was an edited version that's only 3:35.

as i am isnt that short

That's true 'cause mainstream people could not comprehend the complexity of the music.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
in 1999 during the SFAM tour he was doing shots and coke lines in between songs.
