You become a 10th dan after dedicating your entire life to training. After so long, it's not about technical ability, more what you have given back to karate. You cannot become a 10th dan at the age of 50 because you have not shown the time required. How many 10th dans do you know??
Agreed. Of course, all Ryuha have specific guidelies, but for Okinawan dojo, I belive, most see and understand the higher purpose of karate do. The physically-based demands for rank fade at or around 7th Dan because by that time it's ALL intrinsic or the sensei would not have gotten there...
At some point in our lives being devoted to whatever it is we do, karate included, the importance of Who We Are must transcend What We Do. The beauty here is that it's because of our devotion, sacrafice, and dedication to perfection in what we do that has made who we are special, unique, and precious to those who truly know us...
Wonderfully stated. On this I can only place a period. However NMCK69, this one topic leads me to 10,000 other topics that are swimming in my head. We need to do some trainig together soon and writing sooner. Let's talk today if possible.
How many many 10th dans do I know? Several, one of whom that is in this clip. Nakazato Sensei was in his late 80's when he performed the kata here. You are correct saying that it is mostly what you have given back to karate at their age to receive such an honor, yet they were superb technicians in their time.
It is a pride see in this documentary Teachers of the hierarchy that we see in the video. A pride, which criticize this are that not llegarian to nothing in algun martial art.
There are persons of more of 60 years that do better karate that useless some of 30 or 40 years of age. The spirit removes in and not many current Teachers take it in the blood and are useless at the moment of teaching Karate Do or other martial arts and autograduan. There my question: the one who gives them the graduation? And they are a disgrace for the martial arts. With all respect.
Do not take me wrong, but what's the point about becoming 10th dan at the age of 80? I think it would have more sense if you achieved this when you're 50, more or less.
And also, a 75 years old man is not the best example to show kata, just because of his age he cannot perform it correctly.
It is not entirely about the physical, mi amigo. It is not a matter of 'putting in time', they have dedicated their lives to the art. If you wish to find a 50 year old 10th dan, look in your phone book. If you want real karate, seek out the old guys -with real knowledge.
Even if ignoring the point made by Yasaguri, there is one more thing that I feel must be considered. When we watch the masters perform, regardless of age or even BECAUSE of their ages, we are able to finally see the finite detail, the minute subtleties, & tiny nuances that delve beyond ego and athletics to show the true essence of our ways...Treasure for the Knowing.
When sheer power starts to diminish (perhaps age 60-65) there is a refined sense of hyoshi, ma-ai, bambetsu, etc...Timing, knowldge of critical distance, and the catching of an opponent's rhythm allows for delivery of a thoroughly deadly response from any of these "tanmei." No, in today's age, they would not win trophies. Effeciency in the above mentioned areas followed by many, many years of training may not look "sporty" but "looks" don't kill.
