More than likely they saw it as free publicity if there wasn't any contract over the rights. Better to let Gorrilaz fans find the origin of the name, learn about the movie and possibly watch it, rather than alienating the entire Gorrilaz fanbase by nailing their band with a copyright court case and driving them away from the people who made the movies.

They are using names and words, they aren't actually using material from those movies I think. Besides, Clint Eastwood, Billy Murray are just names (anyone can use them right?) and Faust is a German name (a book/opera or something too I think).

The only thing that could be sued for would be Dirty Harry. Then again, it is just an adjective followed by a fairly common name, so I don't think there is much to sue over.

You don't see Mcdonald's asking for royalties when kids sing "Old Mcdonald".
