Hi Jacob! What was your conclusing on this issue? Was it an issue with the fan itself? Or, with the DSM SW? Did you end up having a fix for this?
I do have a similar problem with my new DS212+. The clicking noise mostly happens when I start up the server. I initially thought it was the HDD, but then I have seen your post. I must do a test to start the server without the HDD inside to see if the noise persists.
I have change my fan with replacement from Synology and the problem persist, i notice that if i touch a bit the fan then the noise stops but after hibernate, the same problems again.
I also started to have this problem on my DS212+ right after I updated to the DSM 4 beta. Before that the DS didn't make that noise. That would confirm it's a software issue. What I also noticed is that the fan does not stop spinning (anymore?) when the NAS goes into hibernation (blinking LED).
I think this is the same issue I have and replacing the fan didn't help. It is a software problem with one of their latest OS releases as I believe they are undervolting the fan too much. The fan is actually stopping and starting all the time and this is what is causing the click ...
@whtmakaveli
The FTP Synology server is out.
Anyway:
user: on-line
passw: online_user
Or create a ticket at Synology support. They send FAN.PAT as email attachment.
Bye.

@fab3675 Can you explain how to use this link? I put it in the address bar and it needs a username and password. Thanks

No I haven't, I'm considering unscrewing the fan and taking a look at it, to see what the problem could be...
