Why is this celebrated as a victory in America? It is confusing, because America did not win the war. Shouldn't they be celebrating a war that they actually did win, like the war with Spain, or something?
@TheLiberalKnight Ive had arguements with Americans about this. Most tell me in school they are taught that they won the war because they held back British argression against them. Even though it was a completely defensive war for Britain and British North America/Canada. Others have said since they took Maine which they already had but just never drew borders for. In reality its just mass denial so they dont have to admit how much we kicked their asses despite their larger numbers and firepower
@Cadmann778 Well the British were harassing Americans and conscripting their sailors to fight in the Napoleonic wars. They also blockaded them from trading with France even though they were neutral. They also supplied native Indians to fight expanding American settlers moving west. Invading Canada was more done so to use as a bargaining chip with Britain and less to actually annex it. The war was not even very popular and most Americans had no desire to go to Canada and fight.
@Cadmann778 The New England states were even considering of leaving the Union over it. America had good reasons for war but did not have the resources to really do so. Britain was more concentrated on Europe and could afford little in support for BNA. In the end some shots were fired back and forth but both sides ended up settling and the borders were returned to their post war state.
The historical concept that the republic did not want to annex the two canadas and likely the other British colonies is a created lie to veil the fact that they were, again, unsuccessful in their attempts to take Canada.
There were quite a few battles in 1812-1814, and the borders did /not/ return to 'pre-bellum' borders (eg. New York)
@Cadmann778 And the sad part is, that wasn't the first time, nor is the last time they will pull that stunt. 1) Taking credit for other nations hard work during the 2 world wars. 2) claiming a tie or treaty ended vietnam alone, and not the many years of getting slaughtered by a 'lesser nation's' army in the jungles causing that in the first place. 3) just a few short years ago claiming Mission Accomplished right before they so saw that the war was only beginning. Will they ever lean from this?
@Sparkuus Canadians have Tim Hortons coffee..not Starbucks. LOL ..just kidding. I say that cause TIm Horton also played for Buffalo, where there are Tim Horton's restaurants, so therefore by coffee default, we get Buffalo. Seattle we inherit Microsoft with the coffee...not sure if that is good for us. Having microsoft means the nation will randomly do 'things' to both puzzle and annoy people....like causing the coffee pots to crash when you're in a rushed coffee break. Not sure I want that?
@Jethromcsheepherder Yes, but if we take Seattle, we get Starbucks, and then force them all, worldwide to convert to Tim Hortons! Then I would finally get Timmies here in Japan! :)
@Sparkuus LOL...but you have starbucks? that is sad. You must explain that if Canada boy doesn't get his timmys you will turn into a waremoose and wreak havoc on Tokyo with Godzilla, who wants a double double since you're at it. if that doesn't work, start a group where we can pitch in money for you to open one there. I'm sure its a great place Japan, but with Tim Hortons, it gets that much better!
@Jethromcsheepherder It's an 895km commute just to wreck havoc, so I'll have to pass! I would gladly accept donations to open a Tim Hortons! I'd get people travelling down from Tokyo just for a double double I'm sure! But I realized I actually spend a lot less money going to Starbucks than I do going to Timmies. I only go to SB once or twice a month or less, but I was going to Timmies at least once a day on my last visit to Canada!

@Prairielander
I would have to disagree on the bargaining chip.
America never once gave up that which it took.

@Prairielander except for Maine, we let them keep Maine for some inexplicable reason.
