  • I absolutely adore the contrasts in this song, where Paul sings with a rich, powerful voice then suddenly switches to being sweet and melancholy with "...'Handsome' she says again, 'You've always be my friend'..." Such musical talent.

  • Wish there was a heart instead of a thumbs up. I admit that when I first heard this song I was waiting for the funny to start, when it never did I was taken aback and was forced to relisten to the song with a new ear. I must say that is beautiful and profound and completely unexpected. Bravo Paul. Those few of us in the US who watched this show would love the chance to buy your music.

  • @staindheart420 - So would us Aussies, he hasn't released any music for years.

  • @staindheart420 Did you know if you download 'realplayer' and play this stuff thru mozilla firefox - you can download it??? let me know if you need some help. :)

  • @das0448 What about (Paul's Band) GUD? I have their CD, check it out.

  • Just on the lyrics, I dare say it's "Bowery" rather than Bourie. Based upon the definition.

    "BOWERY"

    1. (among the Dutch settlers of New York) a farm or country seat.

    2. The Bowery, a street and area in new york City, historically noted for its cheap hotels and saloons and peopled by the destitute and homeless.

  • does anyone know what happened to / where we can find Pauls duet with

Rebecca Barnard - ' The Drugs ' - seems to have disappeared from u-tube months ago, and its one of the GNW best songs

  • @landscapecadmonkey it's on the album "Good News Week Tapes Vol 2" which there are a few torrents kicking around of, i suggest google it :)

  • youve always been my friends lord its the lovliest day .. gawd my heart melts when he sings those lyricss of the song wow he is so amazing :D

  • mithol: and you're just a hateful loser

  • @das0448

Think you mean "hasn't" done more.

I agree, though not as angrily. I would buy in a heartbeat a "straight" song realease of DAAS/Paul. I've got the GNW tapes and a few DAAS ones floating around, but a compliation album would be fantastic.

  • @bersaba i'm working on putting one together from the best audio quality i can find on the web of Paul's songs

  • @eyeshalfclosed

I'd love a copy! Perhaps you could even send it to Paul and say "here, do this!"

  • If only :)

  • @bersaba Ok took a while, but I've started a site to collect as many of Paul's songs as possible. There's 23 at the moment, if anybody else has any head over and send them in to me :)

Site: Anyone after the actual live recording of this song; there's a copy I've put up for download along with a number of other of Paul's songs at:

    paulmcdermottmusicDOTyolasiteDOTcom

Thumbs up so people see this comment! :)

  • @eyeshalfclosed

You'll probably already have them, but I've got the DAAS tapes that the ABC sell, DAAS - Dead or Alive (Digital copy of a VCR, though pretty good regardless), and the good news week tapes 1 and 2 (2 has some music on it).

  • @bersaba hey i've got the good news week tapes 1 and 2, but not the tapes from DAAS. Would you mind uploading them to the net somewhere then linking me? (still haven't got a drop box working on the site yet)

  • @eyeshalfclosed

I'll see what I can do! (I have a filesonic premium account atm so might upload there). To make it a bit easier I'll see if I can rip the audio out and make it an mp3. Any advice on a program to use?

  • Really appreciate the upload, thank you.

  • This song made me cry when I first heard it. It is beautiful.

  • Did he write this song himself? wow he's awesome <3

They need to bring this show back.

  • Christ this song makes me sad.

  • Find me someone who can top this and NOT be a "mainstream" artist

  • why why why was this show cancelled ... ABC should release a dvd

  • every time, every time I hear this melody i get teary- stunning

  • Hard to beat

  • I was a young man at 18 when I first heard Paul McD on DAAS. Now 20 years later he is still golden, a beautiful sound for my family to listen to. Australia's secret.

  • that was just so beautiful i cried... i've been in love with paul since DAAS and this is just gorgeous.

  • Comment removed

  • @isolepsis Go to google, and type "YouTube MP3 Downloader" and download it then yeah, it downloads the audio only.

  • DAAS made a point of playing nice songs I think to reflect each of the members could sing very well and it was a little moment in their shows that calmed the audience down. I heard them live when I was 12 at one of their last shows on the Dead and Alive tour, f***ing amazing. There's some tracks they released with Icon that were just as beautiful. Bottle was my favourite of their more serious songs.

  • Lyric corrections: It's "Bowery" Not "bourie" and "Seraphim" Not "seraphins"

  • anyone know who the pianist was?

  • I believe it's Cameron Bruce

  • This is one of the most amazing songs I have heard in months. I always thought he was a fantastic comedian, even if he wasn't always in my taste, but wow, what a soulful, introspective, emotive genius. Hat off to you Paul, you've written a song which plucked on my heartstrings, and made me FEEL. Absolutely astonishingly brilliant. I would buy an album filled with songs like this in a HEARTBEAT.

  • Paul's always been really good. I mean, have you heard his DAAS stuff? Strange that a band famous for a song called "I Fuck Dogs" can then swing around and sing such amazing versions of songs like "Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Throw Your Arms Around Me." He needs to release an album of some form. I'd buy it.

  • Post a link to Throw Your Arms Around Me, I would like to hear it :)

  • You should look up his songs Bottle and Too Beautiful and Transcended as well.

  • I agree with my brother that this guy likes the sound of his own voice, but I actually think he sounds pretty good, especially with beautiful songs like this.

Although it is a little bit abstract with the lyrics there, it makes me wonder whether the effort was put in, or whether random words were pulled out of a hat.

  • Sometimes abstract lyrics don't work or make a song sound contrite. But here, I reckon, they work perfectly.

  • you don't watch GNW do you....

  • I do, why would I not? I found this video looking for a particular Good News Week clip.

  • On Wednesday/Thursday morning at 12:25am, the ABC is showing this episode of the Sideshow! I think. Paul sang Stripped on episode 6, and in the last several weeks the ABC has played episodes 1 - 5.

  • What the does 'bourie' & 'nubilate' mean?

  • I don't know this spelling, but there is a part of New York called "The Bowery".

  • i love this song.

    it's one of my faves.

any ideas bout the meaning of it?

  • It's about a guy who watches his girlfriend get high and he's all torn up about it.

Or that's my interpretation of it.

  • ...nope, don't get it. Sorry.

  • I can't stop watching this. Ever since I saw it last year it has been favourite song. I could never even decide on a fav song until I saw this and I haven't changed my mind since.

  • i i know him very well family friend hahaha hes a wicked man

  • if that's true, show him these comments etc- WE WANT A FULL ALBUM of his solo work including shut up and kiss me, stripped etc- release some albums please!!!! not DAAS not GUD etc- his soulful solo stuff- it's incredible!

  • hahaha it is true. were like heepps close people its awsume!!

  • What a beautiful song. Those lyrics - I can't stop watching this. The man is too talented.

  • this is amazing

    i love mcdermott

  • i love this song

    and i love paul mcdermott

i wich he would write an album

  • This is great, but the best song i've heard him perform is "brendan behan is dead/the old triangle". Its beautiful

  • Agreed, the DAAS performance of those songs on the Big Gig was brilliant. I also loved their rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" at the 1989 AFI awards - imagine the boys with a full orchestra! I wish I had more than a poor quality audio recording of it.

  • just amazing.... i have commented on Paul's great voice in other clips..... first time i have heard him sing so many serious songs .... and really enjoying it!

  • I adore this song, wish I could find somewhere to download it.

  • Now Thats Singing! <3 Paul

  • who sings that song again?

  • Paul. It's original, he wrote it.

  • bongcrime, is appropriate... can you sing? i can play music.. but.. to sing like that? HAHHA you just a wasted wannabe :-)

  • He's so fucking awesome.

  • ... His voice actually made my seltzer bottle vibrate. Odd

Awesome song thanks for the upload.

  • This is one of the most beautiful and memorable songs ever. And I have heard many. Paul, It's right up there. xxx Meg

  • and you, have about all the sophistication of an ameba.

  • Lol! That was funny.

  • is that a bill bryson line? lol

  • I like to think it was original actualy lol

  • lol i think it crops up in his books occasionaly, still a good quote never goes awry

  • looks like you adore him too, otherwise you wouldn't be watching his videos on youtube :oP

  • you actually have to look him up to find him you hypocrite - the real (bong)crime is that you are allowed to comment videos with whatever complex you have against pmd fans

  • Brilliant as always from the great Mr Paul McDermott.

  • I love this song.

    And I love Paul McDermott's voice =)

  • Oh this is fantastic.

Can any kind soul direct me to guitar chords for this or other Paul McD / GUD stuff (I've found DAAS chords).

Thanking you and horray DVD on the way :)

  • Also, Lol, drug song.

  • Cheers

  • fell in love with him when i heard this one

    o_o'' and i'm a guy...

  • Hahahaa, nothing wrong with that!! its a song that makes u go weak at the knees.

  • Now, see, Minion... I do have to wonder about your comment. You see, only a male would be so ignorant and pig-like to make a comment like that. And you've obviously been here, implying you've gone to the trouble of looking Paul up because you like him yourself. Therefore, doesnt your comment eminate hypocrisy, if not irony? Moron.

  • He's a funny guy, he's a good singer.

    I wouldn't snog him.

  • I would. xD

And my best friend is a 'fag'. They are frickin awesome people.

  • I'm not saying anything against fags, their choice where they take it.

    It is, however, funny.

    Also, lol, drug song.

  • Also, Mug, lol, overreaction.

  • I fell in love with him coz of this song too!

  • Ba di da di da di da da da, Ba di da di da di da di da da da dum. Ba di da di da di da da da, Ba di da di da di da di da da da dum. I have been stripped of a layer of meaning I fell through the floor watched you rise through the ceiling. She's so high, Higher than thought can think. A mere sprite, Like one of the nubilate. So hold tight, She radiates light from her jokes; It's what men prefer. They need the centre of things. The centre of things.
  • I watched them packing up all Sunday morning; The day of the fourth and they Fled without warning. It's so bright, The sun almost burns your eyes. A cruel fight, I feel I can sympathise. Famine It pours over boiling words; It's more than we deserve, Love is a beautiful curse. A beautiful curse. Ba di da di da di da da da Ba di da di da di da di da da da dum
  • She said; "I'm stained like a girl from the bowery, I pay my respects to her hourly. I'm just so Clumsy and circumspect." I never know what it meant Perhaps it was heaven sent. She's so high. This kitten on gasoline And codeine Fuelled by her medicine She lies back "Handsome" she says again "You've always been my friend." Lord it's the loveliest day. The loveliest day.
  • I have been stripped of a layer of meaning. I fell through the floor watched you fly through the ceiling. And I find You're finer than porcelain, Or bromine On silver gelatine. In blue sky She's carried by seraphim; Aptly named valium Into the arms of the night. The arms of the night. Ba di da di da di da da da Ba di da di da di da di da da da dum Ba di da di da di da da da Ba di da di da di da di da da da dum
  • i think there almost the same, except i liked the way your ones set out, i think the phrasings done better...but part from that

arnt they just amazing lyrics? paul really has a way with words, i'd advice anyone and everyone to read hes books there awesome

  • Omg yeah I know I've just borrowed three of the books hes written can't wait to get stuck into them. his lyrics are incredible

    she's carried by seraphim

    aptly named valium

into the arms of the night

i didnt realise seraphim meant angel of the highest order, i thought it was like a drug or something. his lyrics are enchanting.

  • Yeah I agree, these ones are set out better, easier to follow, and his lyrics are delicioussssssssssss

  • Does anyone know if these lyrics are written down anywhere because there are some parts I don't understand or can't hear properly.

  • Click on "more info" on the right.

  • I found these lyrics online, I don't know if they are more accurate than the ones posted up, you'll have to listen to the song again and compare, haha ;)

  • holy shit I had no idea he could sing, i thought he was just that cute guy from Good News Week, wow this is a surprise.

  • Same! Are you too young to remember the original like me? High five again! I discovered this secret on youtube too.

  • hahah yeah I just turned 18 so I cant remember the old series at all aye this is my new fave song im humming it all day long lol

  • This is now my favourite song. I haven't listened to anything else for two days.

  • I know right?! This song gives me chills, I love it. He's now my secret obsession hahaha.

  • He's mine too! OMG! High five! Although, my mum guessed. She saw right through me. I showed her "Opps I did it again" and she was like, "Is this your new obsession then?" Damn! I'm so transparent. Hehe. But Paul is gorgeous. xD

  • Did he write all these "music video" songs from Sideshow or was it a songwriter?

  • He wrote alot of these songs with Paul Mac for the sideshow, quite a few were also from his band Gud.

  • Awesome. They're all very good. You can tell a good song when you love it the first time you hear it.

  • if you're really keen to get shivers, go to Tripod's forum (link on their official site) and into a discussion on other websites and there is a link to a page where you can download songs that paul has sung on GNW, but it takes a bit of digging.

that's where i've got it from

  • Hey! I just spent ages going through the Tripod forum looking for the link - do you know an easier way to find it?? I loved ll the songs but can't find any.. Damn..

  • Beautiful as ever Paul. Good News Week is funnier than the sideshow but the sideshow was an out let for young performers ABC shouldn't have canceled it but there loss I guess.

  • i miss the sideshow

  • GNW will never match up to the sideshow. Ever. Nice try though. I miss it...so unique, i think most people werent ready for it

  • this is an amazing song.he is so talented...

  • hes legendary.

  • Ever since I heard him sing the first time I have been unable to get enough of his voice now my Girlfriend Loves him too and she has only heard what is on here.

Thank you so much for putting these vids up.

  • gee i love his voice

also love the sideshow! watch it religiously lol

  • God I love paul! always have, always will!!

  • I'm right there with you, how awesome is it he's coming back with GNW on Ten this year!!! Yay!!

  • Thanks for that chas. Very witty. Twit.

  • You're just jealous because he has more talent in his little finger than you do in your whole body.

  • WOOOOOO!!! RIGHT ON!!!! lol

  • Man, goosebumps every time

  • has anyone else noticed that all the tripod songs uploaded from the sideshow have been removed? the user's who have put them up have been suspended too. maybe it's because the sideshow now have a website with videos. but the paul mcd. ones are all still up. strange.

just warning you, mddawson1, in case it happens to you

  • It could be Tripods management as the ABC have stated several times that they don't mind their stuff on YouTube.

  • but it's only tripods songs from sideshow, their MICF ones and skithouse stuff are still up

  • I emailed GNWTV asking them if mine are OK. If they say no I will take them down.

  • ok, sorry if i've troubled you, i just didn't want you to have your account suspended. i love watching this video.

  • I would rather remove the vids than be shut down.

  • I would rather be shut down that remove the vids. It's all I've got left to remember the phenominon that was the sideshow by.

  • i second that

  • The Guy certainly has talent

  • thankyou so much

  • Anyone know where I can get the CD / mp3 of GUD? Someone mentioned Gigs....is that a website?

  • Paul Mcdermott is a fkn legend! god hes good...

  • Claire Hooper is the poor mans Corinne Grant... All of the regulars need some serious work if the sideshow continues for any amount of time.

(ps its back on the 25 Aug 2007 at the later time slot of 21.35)

  • Not sure if I'm weird or not but I have always thought Corinne Grant was pretty hot.

  • I like Corrine, (and think she's retty) but she can be annoying, and Claire Hooper is 100000X more annoying and about the same amount LESS talented.

    :)

  • I saw her at the Fringe ages ago...she's getting better!

  • I always loved Claire Hooper's segments on the Sideshow. I thought she was hilarious. But she does such quite a bit as team captain on GNW.

  • I want this song~

  • Oh my god.

I fell in love with this song a few weeks ago when I saw it on the sideshow and was hoping someone would upload it.

Thankyou soooooooooooo much for uploading this!!! *worships*

  • I have just uploaded tonights song - Transcended

  • Paul trashed it!!!...added in a whole section he didn't need :o(

  • How do you mean? These are the same verses that are on the CD/Gud version.

  • Sorry I posted it on wrong song. He added verses to Transcended which I think wrecked it. Probably cause I have listened to the song hundreds of times, and I didnt think it need improving. Besides I'm so use to only hearing Cam on piano and Mick on guitar, that the extra instruments just weren't necessary (for any Gud song)

  • Ahhh, yes. I must agree that the extra verses for Transcended aren't really needed, but they say change is as good as a holiday.

I completely agree that they sound better with just Paul, Cam, Mick, piano and guitar...

  • I liked that new section. But then, I didn't hear the original until afterwards and I missed that extra section.

  • Its on their CD. You can get it from Gigs or ask Cameron.

  • Do you have the original recorded version from their CD?

  • Who originally sang this song? I can't find anything anywhere on the net :(

  • He wrote this with a couple of others under the name Gud.

  • Oh My GOD!!!! I love this!!! Can't stop watching it!!! Wish he was 20 years younger so it wouldn't be so wrong for me to be in LOVE with him lol!!!!

  • I would wish that too, if he wasn't such a damn sexy middle aged man!! It wouldn't be the same if he was younger. Besides, this way, we have TWENTY years of material to look back.

  • hey! umm im decided to go to the recording of the Sideshow. Can some one who has been already let me know how it was? i dont want waste my time if its goin to be 3hrs of crap >>

  • Going and being in the Audience is a bloody amazng experiance, its just like being at a real live gig, only after if your lucky you can chat with the muso's and comedians ... I was right behinde Paul in this song, you can kida see me ...

Paul just hates having to do what hes called 'faggy' songs to many times, i believe that he prefers the up beat stuff ... that and repeating your self just gets dull!

I recomend that everyone support and see this show ... I don't know why you wouldn't??

  • i didn't mean to anger anyone, just giving my opinion of what i saw. i think sideshow is a fantastic show. i've been twice and have tickets for 2 more nights. i absolutely love tripod!

  • Do you know when they stop recording?

Coz i want to go and see it again ... its such an amazing experiance ... i may just email them again!

At the end of this show i got my photo taken with Scod, i was so happy!

Paul McDermott has an amazing voice!

  • Do they shoot more than one show at a time or only include certain acts for each TV episode?

  • They shoot one show at a time, but sometime like the night i was there, the did two Tripod songs and we didn't have any Umib's or Kansky's, they had done two the week before.

But the band and the sideshow and the comedians are all there on the night for the ep that weekend!

    I'm going again ...

    Everyone should!

Paul McDermott is a really sharp witted man, its kinda scary and funny to be in the audience!

  • That was what puzzled me as I saw th Kransky's at the end of last nights episode but they were not on (not that I mind, they only seem to have one routine so I find them boring).

  • Yeah the Kransys ain't my faves, but Tripod are and they performed two songs that night ... Gosh I luv them,

And Paul is pretty damn cool as well!

  • I think Tripod were at their best when doing the song in an hour challenge. As for the others, Pauls great, Flacco needs some new material and the less said about Clare Hooper the better.

  • I believe that Tripod needs some new material for the show and so with the other groups like The Umbilical Brothers and Flacco (of whom I'm not that fond of anyway) and i thought that Claire Hooper was about the only decent femail comedian I had heard in a while, but recently her comedy has been going down hill!

  • maybe he's just sick of it? which is different to dislike...?

  • Thanks for posting this song it just blows me away!!!

  • i was there at the filming. while everyone was satnding behind him, me and my friends were standing next to the cameras so he was staring at us the whole time. sorry to tell u guys this but he hates this song even though he sang it so beautifully

  • It's a beautiful song indeed. It doesn't make me cry, but it's sweet. But I'm curious, if he hates this song then why did he sing it? You'd think he would have some kind of control of his own material if he was presenting it.

  • maybe he doesn't really hate it, but he gave us that impression after cursing it and not wanting to sing it again for different camera angles.

paul really is an angry little man with a stunning voice

  • It's not the song, it's the doing it again and again and again. He's always gotten cranky when Ted makes him redo the 'serious' songs.

  • Maybe the song means a lot to him and it emotionally drains him... Or is that too much of a psychoanalysis?

  • Ditto LadyHerenya's comment. *loves repeat function* Sends shivers up my spine.

  • thank you so much for putting this up! I've been listening to it on repeat since I found it...

  • i've loved this song since i first saw Paul and Cam perform it in GUD (i then went home and taught myself to play it on guitar). but to tune into "The Sideshow" for the first time ever and hear this: i cried.

Paul, you've outdone yourself lyrically with this song. Not even "Transcended" get's this close.

Thank you so much for uploading this!

    til next....

    ~Kits~ (nostalgic)

  • That's saying something too because lyrically Transcended is amazing. But this transcends absolutely everything ever. The music accentuates its beautiful beauty. I can't get over it.

  • Man I missed his missing after all those years from DAAS and GNW...

  • I saw this last night (26/5/2007) and I thought that it was great. Thanks for uploading it. :D
