This is an excellent documentary which is available on Netflix as well. While it is true that Christianity is not the native "religion" of African Americans, the practice of it does not diminish the relationship with God. God is not a religion or even a denomination. Lets remember that Africans weren't introduced to God, we already knew God. We were introduced to the European religion and made it our own.
Rock and rap music are distilled from the spiritual ecstasy of the black religious tradition. The reaching towards heaven for an anointing was secularized with (largely) men playing guitars filling in where god is left out.
Likewise with the sexual grinding you frequently find accompanying rap music, there is an inversion (some might argue perversion) of purpose. Those hip movements are derived from African spiritual dance, with a radically different kind of communion being sought.
True and sincere holy worship, wow, back in those day's. True prayer warroirs as you can see in how they rejoice in the true spirit, not showing off thier dance as like black churches now a day's pure junk as you walk in the doors. no anointing, no spirit, no conviction, just waisting time showing off their so called dance.
@Bayareachapters2002, I believe that St. Luke Powerhouse was in Phoenix, AZ. The video footage that you see here was actually made into a sound recording from that 3 days revival.
If my memory serves me right, one of Elder Overstreet's sons pastors the church now. But, I can't be sure.
@judahlamar - Yes you are correct. This church is located in Phoenix, AZ in the south phoenix area. I live in phoenix and the church I attend is right down the street from St. Lukes Powerhouse COGIC. Also, our church is in their District. . . Yes, one of the sons is pastoring the church. He is our District Supt. . . All the brothers still attend St. Lukes Powerhouse COGIC and can still sing. This is definitely an awesome video of them back in the ole days.
Thanks for posting these videos.... I remember this is how Church services used to be years ago.... Church services were joyful and full of experience.... It was a joy just to attend Church services years ago.... When is the actual videos going to be coming out???? I'd love to get a copy of them..... Please inbox me with the info..... Thanks and be blessed on this week....
@judahlamar Where is St. Luke Powerhouse COGIC located at? Yes as a matter of fact, some of thise footage is from a Spiritual Temple which is located in Oakland, California.... Yes you are right about that.... Be blessed on this week....

But how is god so real to black people when it's a European religion. Weren't Africans originally polytheistic ? This doesn't make sense.

This is classic COGIC. The anointing of the Holy Ghost is still strong on this
footage.
