  • Jo Brand has one joke ... and that stopped being funny many years ago. Truly mediocre!

  • I adore this woman

  • tubzzz

  • Loved this part of the interview - had me in stitches when it was broadcast.

  • If you look beyond Jo's sexist material, she's actually a great woman. I have huge respect for her.

  • What is it with Parky and women - sexist bastard!

  • @zephranna01 Yeah, i think that's what Desmond Tutu called him.

  • 'weren't'? why did they use the past tense? O.O

  • lol'd at Silla's

    "!!!MICHAEL"

and the look she gave the audience

  • lol, 'have you always been fat?' and he thought that was a perfectly ok question. Shame on you parkinson, jo brand is awesome! I became a fan after watching her early stand-up shows in the 90's.

  • @richlovesParisH

If it were a random question, it would have been inappropriate.

In the context of a conversation about the fact that she is overweight, it wasn't.

  • hahaha went on the pill to have loads of sex but it made me fat so I never got any! classic!!!!!!

  • i do like her, i cant help it! but her auto-biography is quite bad.

  • Parkinson is ace. Better than those american talk show host ( i.e. Craig ferguson, operah, david letterman, leno)

  • @lamestguyintown Craig Ferguson is Scottish...

  • What a great interview.

  • Jo Brand is mega. I love her and Alan Davis on QI. You can tell that they're mates.

  • @sparkyinbath I saw Alan Davies in Sydney, Australia in 2011. He said that during a period of his life 18+ years ago he'd been quite depressed and Jo Brand had been extremely supportive and still was. Apparently they've been friends for a long time.

I agree, it does show during their interactions on QI.

  • Blackpoolbarmpot, I've met lots of clever, good looking, intelligent, non-left wing barmy nutball women from Blackpool, JB I'm afraid isn't one of them.

  • Jo Brand is absolutely brilliant !.

  • @obakegadeso I'll tell 'Jo' to come round your house and sit on your face and fart !!

  • She's hilarious. Love Jo.

  • With Jo Brand, i find myself actually caring a lot more about what she says than how she actually looks.

One of the few female celebrities that i actually find interesting in an intellectual sense.

  • She does look like John Sergeant. You know what they say about ugly peep, they have to make more effort

  • How exactly is the relevance of someone's sexuality an offensive term?Shes very clever, obviously unlike the small minded bigot you are.Prick

  • she is funny. is it just me or does she look like john sergent

  • She does! she made a joke about it in her performance on "live at the apollo"

  • Jo Brand is wicked, such an intelligent and well humoured lady. Would love to meet her.

  • What a repulsive ugly comment just below this one. Astonishing how blind people can be. Jo Brand is brilliant, smart and funny. The remark below is none of these things. Listen to what she actually says.

  • I think you missed the point of my comment. Why would people want to know if someone had always been fat. Unless your the shallow type of course.

  • Surely the fact that a lot of Jo's comedy is based around her size makes the question "have you always been fat" relevant.

  • @antod11 Yes yes a thousands times yes. I totally agree with you. I love Jo Brand :)

  • Have you always been fat? what a stupid question.

  • How is it a stupid question. The answer can't be found out just by thinking it in your head.

  • Depends how stupid you are and why you would want to know if someone had always been fat. This reply thing is now a little boring.

  • There is absolutely no link between degrees of stupidity and wanting to know whether somone has been overweight all their life or became fat at some point. Brand points out that using the pill seemed to cause weight gain. An answer that isn't especially obvious to a perfectly reasonable question.

  • Is she related to Russell Brand?

  • thats who she married!!

  • NO NO NO NO NO NO NO No

  • Yes. she 's Russells mother. Notice the similar hairstyles & Accent. lol

  • She's his little sister.

  • don't think so..but she's very funny.

  • done

  • Jo Brand is brilliant, I love her humour

  • Jo has that lovely husky cigarette-y voice of one of those lunch ladies at school who call you 'darlin' or 'luv'

  • I'm so glad Jo Brand gave up Nursing and became a Comedienne.

    She is one talented Lady.

  • lol

    get spellcheck

  • Yeah Cilla Black is a shit comedian, probably where she comes from might have something to do with it perhaps??

  • yeah fat may be negative depending on its context, e.g. 'wow what a fat beef burger' - not offensive.. 'have you always been fat' - offensive, granted mildly. you have illustrated my opinion. and im not un-chilled. Im simply opening up the possibility that Jo would be well within her right to be offended, I'm not dismissing it, because 'I'ts no big deal, really'... and 2 cents seems about the right value for your remark.

  • "_and 2 cents seems about the right value for your remark._"

Rather uncalled-for, wouldn't you say? Aren't we all just expressing opinions? I'm quite sure whichever way Jo experienced his faux pas, they settled it just fine. What I mean is that we're making too much a big deal about it because he didn't mean to be offensive nor cynical. I can picture Jo for instance saying something like, "Fa-at?! Why thank you very much, Michael," and he would have laughed at himself, and that would be it.

  • In my opinion the question in its intention isn't bad, its just the way he worded it.... If he had asked 'Have you always been over-weight' or 'have you always been a larger girl...with a cheery tone' etc... but to ask outrightly 'have you always been fat' is insultingly rude and personal and insensitive... and from Parkinson, who's usually so conscious not to upset his guests... but Jo took it like the pro that she is. Fair play to Cilla for sticking up for her..

  • Oh for God's sake, people. Parki's question could sound rude if taken out of the context, but it came straight after Jo's own joke about her being fat. He directly "rebounded", for lack of a better word, inadvertently repeating the same word she had used to make her point. "I like Oasis". "Have you always liked Oasis?" Or "that band", fine. But it's no big deal, really.

  • You would.

  • I'm sure parki didn't mean that question to sound like it did, but it was still a bit out of order. He should have thought about what he said before he said it.

  • Brand always appears to be really tough cookie but I wouldn't have taken for granted that her feelings wouldn't have been hurt by the question, since being fat has long had many unfair negative associations. But Parkinson, for sure, did not mean be insensitive. He's always been this warm and candid with his guests. Ah well.

  • In my opinion a person who asks these type of questions should first have a naked look at the interviewed. Then he could speak truthfully.

  • Why is "have you always been fat" an offensive question?

  • How about if I asked you:

    "Have you always been stupid?"

  • It's much more akin to "have you always been skinny", because to assume one is better or worse is prejudice on the part of the audience, not the questioner.

  • As to which is more offensive, I think that both are very personal questions and depending on the situation are potentially upsetting to the person being asked.

    "Have you always been gay"

    "Have you always been black"

What purpose does this type of question serve? Other than to make the person being asked uncomfortable at best.

  • Yes well, you can't bloody well change being black or gay. Granted, it was a blunt question, Weirfan69 has a very good point. And we must remember, there is an air of joviality to this interview.

  • I was making reference to past (and currently in some things unfortunately) discrimination against black/asian/indian (etc) and/or homosexual people in that fat bashing is still seen as ok and acceptable. Which it is not.

  • Yeah but it wasn't fat bashing -___-

  • I've got the fat down pat, but funny is a lot more difficult to accomplish.

  • aaahaha

  • I want to be just like Jo when I grow up.

  • Jo's awesome!

  • I love JO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love jo

  • she is NOT fat!!!!! I love her, unfortunately she is married. I will find her look-alike somewhere in London

  • you cannot say she is not fat!? i like her and am not being mean but she is probably 'obese'

  • This is just retarded. I love Jo but you can clearly see that she is overweight. People like you need to stop kissing ass... if Jo can admit she's fat, why can't you?

  • Considering the context she established with reference to how she reacted at being called fat before, I hardly think it was offensive for him to ask her about it... I'd like to think that people with a good sense of humour take things with a pinch of salt.

  • have you always been fat? bloody hello parky dont beat around the bush!

  • It was an innocent question. A little ill-considered, perhaps, but if Jo Brand isn't offended no one else has the right to be. And she obviously wasn't phased.

  • whys everyone winging about "have you always been fat?" question? Ever seen Jo on standup or any comedy show she takes the p!ss about herself alot anyway

  • oh, that's alright then.

    /IBTP

  • It's called "I'll make fun of myself befor anyone else can".. it's self- defense. Alot of stand ups are very insecure, and so try to joke about the things that trouble them most.. ( say, like Margaret Cho) I can't imagine being called fat doesn't hurt. It was an abrupt and rudely phrased question. Period.

  • I think it's her state of mind. If she's happily married with children, she may not be as insecure as you thought. Still, I see what your getting at with the question, which I thought was cruel of such an esteemed interviewer.

    x
