lol, 'have you always been fat?' and he thought that was a perfectly ok question. Shame on you parkinson, jo brand is awesome! I became a fan after watching her early stand-up shows in the 90's.
@sparkyinbath I saw Alan Davies in Sydney, Australia in 2011. He said that during a period of his life 18+ years ago he'd been quite depressed and Jo Brand had been extremely supportive and still was. Apparently they've been friends for a long time.
I agree, it does show during their interactions on QI.
Blackpoolbarmpot, I've met lots of clever, good looking, intelligent, non-left wing barmy nutball women from Blackpool, JB I'm afraid isn't one of them.
What a repulsive ugly comment just below this one. Astonishing how blind people can be. Jo Brand is brilliant, smart and funny. The remark below is none of these things. Listen to what she actually says.
There is absolutely no link between degrees of stupidity and wanting to know whether somone has been overweight all their life or became fat at some point. Brand points out that using the pill seemed to cause weight gain. An answer that isn't especially obvious to a perfectly reasonable question.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
parkinson his such a fucking sycophant and an awful arse licker. laughing at jo brand is indicative of this. she's not funny as a stand up comedienne but she's good in sitcom
yeah fat may be negative depending on its context, e.g. 'wow what a fat beef burger' - not offensive.. 'have you always been fat' - offensive, granted mildly. you have illustrated my opinion. and im not un-chilled. Im simply opening up the possibility that Jo would be well within her right to be offended, I'm not dismissing it, because 'I'ts no big deal, really'... and 2 cents seems about the right value for your remark.
"_and 2 cents seems about the right value for your remark._"
Rather uncalled-for, wouldn't you say? Aren't we all just expressing opinions? I'm quite sure whichever way Jo experienced his faux pas, they settled it just fine. What I mean is that we're making too much a big deal about it because he didn't mean to be offensive nor cynical. I can picture Jo for instance saying something like, "Fa-at?! Why thank you very much, Michael," and he would have laughed at himself, and that would be it.
In my opinion the question in its intention isn't bad, its just the way he worded it.... If he had asked 'Have you always been over-weight' or 'have you always been a larger girl...with a cheery tone' etc... but to ask outrightly 'have you always been fat' is insultingly rude and personal and insensitive... and from Parkinson, who's usually so conscious not to upset his guests... but Jo took it like the pro that she is. Fair play to Cilla for sticking up for her..
Oh for God's sake, people. Parki's question could sound rude if taken out of the context, but it came straight after Jo's own joke about her being fat. He directly "rebounded", for lack of a better word, inadvertently repeating the same word she had used to make her point. "I like Oasis". "Have you always liked Oasis?" Or "that band", fine. But it's no big deal, really.
I'm sure parki didn't mean that question to sound like it did, but it was still a bit out of order. He should have thought about what he said before he said it.
Brand always appears to be really tough cookie but I wouldn't have taken for granted that her feelings wouldn't have been hurt by the question, since being fat has long had many unfair negative associations. But Parkinson, for sure, did not mean be insensitive. He's always been this warm and candid with his guests. Ah well.
It's much more akin to "have you always been skinny", because to assume one is better or worse is prejudice on the part of the audience, not the questioner.
As to which is more offensive, I think that both are very personal questions and depending on the situation are potentially upsetting to the person being asked.
"Have you always been gay"
"Have you always been black"
What purpose does this type of question serve? Other than to make the person being asked uncomfortable at best.
Yes well, you can't bloody well change being black or gay. Granted, it was a blunt question, Weirfan69 has a very good point. And we must remember, there is an air of joviality to this interview.
I was making reference to past (and currently in some things unfortunately) discrimination against black/asian/indian (etc) and/or homosexual people in that fat bashing is still seen as ok and acceptable. Which it is not.
This is just retarded. I love Jo but you can clearly see that she is overweight. People like you need to stop kissing ass... if Jo can admit she's fat, why can't you?
Considering the context she established with reference to how she reacted at being called fat before, I hardly think it was offensive for him to ask her about it... I'd like to think that people with a good sense of humour take things with a pinch of salt.
It was an innocent question. A little ill-considered, perhaps, but if Jo Brand isn't offended no one else has the right to be. And she obviously wasn't phased.
whys everyone winging about "have you always been fat?" question? Ever seen Jo on standup or any comedy show she takes the p!ss about herself alot anyway
It's called "I'll make fun of myself befor anyone else can".. it's self- defense. Alot of stand ups are very insecure, and so try to joke about the things that trouble them most.. ( say, like Margaret Cho) I can't imagine being called fat doesn't hurt. It was an abrupt and rudely phrased question. Period.
I think it's her state of mind. If she's happily married with children, she may not be as insecure as you thought. Still, I see what your getting at with the question, which I thought was cruel of such an esteemed interviewer.
I absolutely LOVE Jo Brand - she is in noway, shape or form my favourite stand up but she seems such a nice genuine person with a brilliant sense of humour

If it were a random question, it would have been inappropriate.
In the context of a conversation about the fact that she is overweight, it wasn't.

I think you missed the point of my comment. Why would people want to know if someone had always been fat. Unless your the shallow type of course.
bules72 2 years ago
Surely the fact that a lot of Jo's comedy is based around her size makes the question "have you always been fat" relevant.
