I think it fits pretty well with the English dub's voice-acting, though. Taken as a manga/anime series, the Japanese music matches. Taken as a "nineties thing", the English soundtrack is great. Taken as music on its own merits, it's all good.

For the record, I have read the manga in Japanese, and watched both the original version and the dub... Not to mention games and peripheral materials. I have a reasonable idea about the "true essence of dragon ball", as you put it.

Listen man, I grew up with this series too so I know the attachment a lot have to this show.....but honestly its far from the best. The story telling is made up as it went, the comedy is decent, the drama and character development is pretty lackluster. Compare that to a series like FMA or One Piece where the story is complex, humor very prevalent, drama developed and concise.
