The banjo new? Nah, it dates back to the skin lutes of Mesopotamia almost 5,000 years ago. From there the three string skin lute spread across central Asia and North Africa. The Egyptians played them and the Iranians played them, and the Arab traders carried them to West Africa where a short 4th string was added.
When it got to America Sweeney added another bass string and a hoop body.
Its family is one of the oldest string instruments in the world, and its relatives cover the globe.
The title is "Wondrous Love." A traditional, beautifully stark shape-note version appears on the 1951 album, "Old Harp Singing" (Folkways FA 2356--see notes therein for further info). The version heard in this film, being carefully arranged (by whom, I don't know), is very different from the traditional setting. I like this arrangement, and the accompanying visual. I believe that the lead singer in the performance in this film is Horton Barker (see Smithsonian Folkways FW02362).

Well, that's a silly reason.

@izzymcm Especially since early black history is so closely tied to this kind of music, just like it is to American history of this era.

@georgiaswamper - IGNORANCE? You dumb shit:
1) All black folks hate all white folks
2) And visa versa
3) You have no friends
4) Earl Scruggs was the last banjo player, he died
5) Ignorance is only made better by spreading
ROFL!

Great stuff - particularly the old boy dancing at about 2½ minutes in. Thanks for sharing!
