You have to get all the coins in the level to access this level. It's available on the SNES version and the gba version.

@complexion7 You can miss one or two. The only one that requires you to get every coin is 7-2. The P-wing is worth it but that one is always so annoying. I hate stockpiling frog suits.

Yep. The game was remade along with Mario 1, Mario 2 and Mario 2 (Both the US and Japanese versions!) for SNES as "Super Mario All-Stars"
