  • Hey I am a new artist just starting up my youtube channel. I'm a fan of Conte's and I write dark dramatic music! check it out and subscribe if you like it!

  • This song reminds me of "Take Five" by Brubeck. SWEET!!!

  • Nataly likes him too.

  • Brilliant... Especially the 'metal face' whilst playing an acoustic bass!

  • This is so inspirational.

  • elton john is pissing his pants.

  • His face when he's playing the bass amuses me :)

  • I love this whole album, but I keep coming back to this song. It's so different and clever. It's like the Charlie Brown theme on mushrooms.

  • elliott smith cover please... thank u in advance!

  • The end bit is kinda creepy...... it's still the song, but like it would sound from a hundred miles away.....

  • The end bit is kinda creepy...... it's still the song, but like it would sound from a hundred miles away.....

  • :28 bass face :D

  • signature means metrum???

  • @kadeczka

Idk what metrum is, but time signature is basically which note values get a beat and how many of them. Like 4/4 means that there are 4 quarter notes in one measure, 7/8 means that there are 7 eight notes in one measure.

  • The song makes me think about a grown up Charlie Brown! Its so beautifully sad. I love it. (P.S. Sorry if I am TOTALLY off track, btw)

  • @freshyoungbalkib I totally agree; my first thought was Vince Guaraldi.

  • Beautiful voice <3

  • This is my heart's song right now.

  • @claudiofontenele, I hear 5/8, then a break to two times 3/8, one time 2/8 and one time 4/8.

At the bridge I recognize Two times 3/8, one 2/8, again two times 3/8 and once again 2/8, followed by the concluding 4/8, before switching back to 5/8.

But I agree with you - this is not like anything before - just awesome.

  • I guess you have to buy the VS4 book to get to know the time signature

  • I hear it mostly in 5/8, with the "having the time" section in four measures structured as 3/8, 5/8, 2/8, 2/8. Those last four beats are a little too choppy for one measure of 4, at least to my ears.

Anyway, this song blows me away. Probably my favorite of Jack's.

  • I though green day. this blew away my thought. there goes my night.

  • I just love the faces you pull. :). Musics not bad either ;P.

  • Jack Conte "Time Of Your Life" is featured on Indie/Rock Playlist: July (2011)

  • STIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL SEARCHING.

My god, this song has been haunting me for days now. Too catchy! This one is definately one of my favourites off VS4

  • the beginning of this song reminds me of the tallest man, the broadest shoulders by sufjan stevens

  • Can this be my official theme of my life?

    thx

  • Mr Pomplamoose!

  • I think this dude is my favorite.

  • I want your acoustic bass O.O

  • I love the ending bit with the reverb. I wish you had kept it for the album.

  • What time signature is this in? 5/4?

  • @JamesTheodoreAustin I guess yes! It is is a 5/4, but at the "are you having the time of your life", it brokes to like 4 times of 3/4; or one time of 12/4; or 2 times of 3/4 and 3 times of 2/4. This last one is what makes more sense to me, but I never saw something like before! Jack is awesome!

  • @claudiofontenele i would say 5/8 but it is ultimately the same. :P

at "are you having the time of your life" it is 3/8, 5/8, 4/8.

    and at 1:08 its 3/8, 5/8, 3/8, 5/8, 4/8.

i think this makes more sence.

    you're right: jack's awesome :)

  • @claudiofontenele "are you having the time of your life" is one bar of 3/4 a bar of 5/4 then a bar of 4/4. Its wicked.

  • @claudiofontenele It's weird. It seems to be different in different perspectives. I hear a series of 5/4, then switching from 3/4 to 5/4 to 3/4 to 5/4 then one 4/4 measure.

  • @JamesTheodoreAustin Mostly :P

  • Comment removed

  • @JamesTheodoreAustin Definitely 5/4. I think the "time of your life" section is a measure of 3/4, a measure of 5/4, then a measure of 4/4, then back to form. The 2x 3/4 + 3x 2/4 that was suggested counts the same, but "time of your" is one musical thought. Probably grouped as 5/4. Semantics, I know.

With business concluded, Jack Conte is easily one of the most imaginative composers/performers I've ever had the good fortune of seeing/hearing. Thank you YouTube, and a huge thank you to Jack.

  • @JamesTheodoreAustin I think its too fast to be 5/4 I think its more like 5/8

  • its not for everyone but i do like

  • curious as to whether he has more fun recording the music or the videos? :p

  • @snakkajak Through the magic of videosong it is both at the same time!

  • Did you get that Okaboji hoodie in Iowa? Lake Okaboji is about 45 mins from my house.

  • left-handed drummer on a right-handed set!! me TOO!!! love it :)

  • Awesome, memorable song. I just keep replaying it. It's an achievement.

Strikes me as having a lot of XTC in it.

  • reverberation is very strange

  • do you edit your own videos?

  • hey jack when you die (god forbid) can i have all you pianos/synths/organs pls :-D

  • You are the man...

Really, I admire you so much I can't tell...

I am learning to play the electric guitar, and got myself a crappy pedal for it, with just a few effects... and I get totally lost everytime I try to program something! You got a great sound on that guitar, it reminds me of some of the beatles songs (latest years).

    Congratulations!

  • Groove it, Jack...fuggin groove it, man.

  • Woooo *thumbsup*

  • I love your vibe Jack!

I like the Acoustic Bass on this track, why did you pan it right instead of keeping it central?

  • I think the bass is my favorite part of this song. Any specific reason for using the one you did over the electric one we see in most of your vids?

  • I love your music, but all the videos are inside the room and quite similar. Why not to try something else? =)

  • Oooh, is that a new grand piano I see? Nice...

  • Take a walk with my dog through the forest, your music in my ears, that's some two hours really well spend! ;) Great record!

  • After listening to this song numerous times, I can say that I can definitely relate to the meaning of this song. Hell I'm at that point in my life as well where I'm trying to figure out what I want to be. I'm sure being a musician is no easy road, but I would like to think that it has its rewards. :)

  • It is impossible to get this song out of my head... in particular the bass groove. Also love the channeling of George Harrison at 1:16 and 1:34. Love love love your stuff.

  • the bass line is joyous :')

  • I seriously dig everything you do..

  • does anyone know what kind of acoustic bass Jack is using in this song?

  • @josephcintron1980 I believe it is a Martin.

  • So, the intro has the drums on the right side of the screen and the piano on the left. Also, the drums are panned far right and the piano far left. Subtle but AWESOME!!!

Some people are my hero. Some people are Jack Conte.

  • How long have you been working on this video. It looks like you are in your old recording studio

  • hey jack, i was wondering; do you have perfect pitch? also, whats your favorite mic that you use?

  • You must be rolling in money! How can you afford all of those instruments, technology, and editing programs?

  • Makes me think of Radiohead for some reason.. Man you'll make millions

  • Smooth... Simply beautiful.

  • I was just listening to your older stuff (Nightmares and Daydreams) and then I listened to this again. Man, your stuff has really developed! I mean, its hard to compare any of your stuff being as its all so different. But, your stuff these days is just amazing! Kudos, dude! Awesome stuff!

  • FANTASTIC!

  • WOW WOW! the Bass is panned LEFT!!! I haven't ever even considered panning the bass. It's always just right up the middle. But it works! My mind has been expanded.

  • your music is so rad... as is your beard. Love this song!!

  • Man, you really like writing songs in 5/4

  • Sir,

I love the basses you use, but you do not have them posted on your gear page (unless I am mistaken?). Do tell, please.

    NEW ALBUM?! WAAHOO!!

  • god i hate how much i love you

  • Ahhh... beautiful acoustic bass you got there!

  • I'd love for you to produce my album, that'd be sick!

  • This sounds like juiced up Badly Drawn Boy! Me likey.

  • When will Jack conte actually tour and transcribe this live. Get a band already.

  • You remind me of Paul Giamatti. Took me a few days to figure out who it was. Was bothering me ever since I first saw one of your vids. Great stuff too by the way. Lovin that sound you got

  • Wow I thought I liked pomplamoose, but now I'm thinking this stuff is pretty snazzy

  • I recently bought all of your songs. All of them. At once. You're my absolute inspiration. <3

  • Great mix and song, I love how you found a perfect spot on the right for the bass in the mix. Very cool!

  • new musical inspiration after bein stuck in a bit of a rut for a good week or so, thanks a load

  • Sweet lovin your sound jack.

  • Love the new album. go get it if you havn't yet!

  • diggin the Okoboji shirt. Have you been there? Oh, and fantastic music as usual. :D

  • old studio / new studio. nice work jack. the time of your life.

  • Brilliant!

  • wow. i literally have nothing else to say.

  • awesome I love all of jack/pomplamoose music.

  • Hey Jack, Very cool stuff man. Very inspiring! Keep em coming! Your new fan from the south...Mikey

  • Yes he is. One about every 2 weeks.

  • I believe he is. In one of his web casts he said that he was going to release a new video about every couple of weeks.

  • love this

  • Hey Jack, are you going to post videos of all your songs from the new album?

  • I can not get over how much I love the piano in this song:) Very nice Jack

  • I only have 1 problem, jack. Is there a reason u r not making your songs longer? Other than that awesome job.

  • Ive liked seeing your guitar gear progress through your vids. Love this one, its been a sweet change from the Pamplamousse stuff

  • Talent.

  • Hey man. You´re a incredible musician. One of my favorites. I love Pomplamoose e just got hook up in your solo work. Great arrangements.

One question, do you mix your own work?

  • You are the best, man! When I think you're a genious and totally incredible and I've heard everything you could make, you come with something even more amazing! It's been a long time that I don't buy any cd, but I'm gonna buy all your stuff! The discs, the book, the orchestration, everything! Congratulations, for real!

  • Where is that girl ?

  • This sounds so much like something Porcupine Tree would have done on their "Lightbulb Sun" album!

  • @virgiledawance awesome record, PT and Jack should totally try to do something together =D !!!

  • This sounds so much like something Porcupine Tree would have done on their "Lightbulb Sun"!

  • Dear Jack.

This is honestly my favorite, most favorite song on the album. Most favorite ever.

I am having the time of my life.

    You're amazing.

  • Jack is your video timebase 30 fps or more?

  • MOREMOREMOREMOREMOREMOREMOREMOREMOREMORE!!!!!!

  • That piano riff is addicting-i love it man!

  • I like it....this sounds like something that Elliott Smith would make but it up beat.

  • Muy bueno, Jack

  • You just must love the 5/4 feel this song has. Amazing! i'm so glad that Jack is back!

  • what about the big old piano? I see that the half of this video was filmed in the previous studio, and the other half in the new studio, but in the new studio I can only see a new piano.

  • one man band man

  • 1.59 is a beautiful shot. from going wide on everything and then a telephoto just plonked in it looks great! did you use a different lens perchance. Also VS4 is a great album!..... just thought I'd let you know.

  • The "outro" is so eerie.

  • There's moments in this song, your voice is eerily akin to Elliott Smith. But I'm lovin every minute of it.

  • I love how you make 5/8 sound so smooth and also the acoustic bass guitar

The time you spend in post-production and editing must be tremendous and we all appreciate your hard work!!!!!!!!

  • hey Jack did you get message?

  • My finger's numb from mashing the replay button so many times :D

  • You should introduce the NEW PIANO!

  • Cool! Nice song and video editing! I know that creating a song takes time and apart from that to create a video with multiple shots takes time in itself.

    Thumbs up!

    G-Phi

  • This is TRULY AWESOME! I've listened to it like 5 times and I still have to tear myself away from it! Just . . . AWESOME!!!

  • How did I miss this song? I thought I "bought everything" :)

    -You Rock Jack..!

  • These videos must take so long to put together. I really appreciate your hard work at creating something so awesome. I'll be in the front row at your first show in South east US.

  • I almost hate to watch your videos because each and every one is SO inspirational...I just want to cut out of work early, setup some mics, grab some instruments and make music!

  • Jack, the new stuff is really great! Quick question, I notice sometimes you use the Cort bass and sometimes you use the Martin acoustic. My untrained ears can't tell that much of a difference. How do you decide which one you are going to use, or do you use both and decide after listening?

  • The groove reminds of "Take Five"

  • How long had you been working on this one, Jack? Seeing both studios in one video threw me off a bit!

  • i like your reverb on the guitar :) is very nice :)

  • @YellowSpeckeldToad - hey thanks! i was particularly proud of this tone. It's a Nelson Coquette guitar through two overdrives (the EHX Tube Zipper and the custom Bruiser made by Charles DeArmon) with the memory man delay afterwards. The delay time is set very short, probably like 50 -100, and the feedback is cranked so it rings for a long time after the initial pluck, making it feel like a tinny verb or something. then i turn down the bass on my amp which is a fender twin from the early 70s

  • @jackcontemusic its a really nice tone, im a first year music tech. student so i can apreciate the epicness of your work. keep it up mate =]

  • @jackcontemusic NERDERY!!!! LOVE IT!

  • @jackcontemusic

All I understood was, "Blah blah blah... I am a musical badass."

  • @jackcontemusic I'm sure it might be a little more obvious when/if you post the video for it, but would you mind telling me what you did for the guitar sound on 'Mercenary'? It's easily my favorite song on the new album and the guitar tone always blows me away. Is it just the setup you have here but with a tremolo? Anyway, thanks for making such amazing music. Been a fan for years!

  • so. awesome.

  • I love this. Your style inspires me deeply!

  • @jackcontemusic Thank you so very much for the response! I am a media student and am interested in different and alternative video techniques and i have loved this "bullet" technique since i first saw it. Can't wait to see the behind the scenes! Love all your music. :)

  • just bought your album on itunes, ive been waiting a long time for this

  • The more I hear this song the better it gets.

I relate to this so much in this time of my life. Thank you for letting me know what is important. I only have one life...though in zelda I have four :3

  • I love you dear sir :)

  • brilliant lyrics

  • God damn, you're a talented bloke!

  • Of all the excellent songs on the album I keep coming back to this one for some reason. So great.

  • I must know. When are you going to post Long Long Time Ago? That is definitely one of my favorites from the new album.

  • You know why I love this stuff.... this man loves music and it shows.

  • Jack's music is so damn good.

  • i love how jack just rocks out no matter what instrument he is playing.. guitar - ROCKIN, drums - ROCKIN - toy xyliphone - ROCKIN!!

and by the way Jack, we're still waiting for the OH HELL videosong!!!!

  • I like how you get lost in your own music. A rare beauty in musicians I say.

  • you're like Schroeder mixed with the energy of dave grohl.

  • YEAH First 3 Seconds i knew i would love it

  • The piano parts remind of Charlie Brown. I love it.

  • 10 people aren't having the time of their life

  • I love the piano melody for this song the most, the chorus just drives this into the stratosphere. Love the video work for this.

  • This is good but I think it would be a bettet Pomplamoose song. Nat was ther anyway filmjing and editing, why not have her sing? I wish Jack and Nat would realize just how good and special they are together.

  • I've been listening to this album since the day it came out, Can't wait for the "Long Long Time Ago" vid to be posted, or for the book to come in the mail.

    Peace!

  • New piano?

  • Jack! You kinda remind me of Paul on American Idol :3

  • Was expecting for Green Day, but its cool too :)

    Ps.: Make that!!

  • very cool Jack....very cool

  • @yxonpat thank you! :)

  • Wonderful!

  • Excellent! Conte meets Brubeck.

  • Jack, do you do all of your own mixing and mastering?
