@trumpetman80 Yeah, the voicing is , from low note to high, Eb Ab D Gb. Moving up to a F9 chord (voice F A D Gb) for 1/2 a bar. I got it by doing the Davis version.
I love Kurt's "'Round Midnight" as much as I love Metheny's "Lonely Woman"! His tone is incredibly beautiful, rich, and hauntingly deep. Let the angel sing for your returning...to the States soon, I hope. I want to hear him live again!
I just listened to a piano etude by Messiaen for a 20th century music class. In it, each note had a specific dynamic assigned, from ppp to fff. The result upon first listen was that some of the accompaniment blended into the background like a second pianist.
I get the same vibe when i hear the opening of this video. Kurt has such impeccable control, and makes self-accompaniment sound so easy.
Let me try to respond for gerardm, if I may. I am sure it was meant as a compliment. Just poke around on youtube, you'll see 'em: a thousand cats that can play a bit of jazz on a guitar - "jazz guitarists". Then there are the few like Kurt, who are so musical and masterful that they transcend the instrument. One listens to Kurt, and hears not such and so a scale, mode, or arpeggio, or brand of gtr so much as one is able to "see" scenes, stories. ...a painter with notes! Artistry.
Incredible solo! Kurt is just impredictable he is awesome! I would like to learn the chords cause are not like the original, to try to understand what he did on the solo. BRAVO
Thanks for these Kurtvids. Tyson, fellow Angeleno here. Jazz Bakery has to relocate this summer, but they expect to re-open by September. Not sure why Kurt had to cancel his fall gig there, unless something's up w/ the Bakery.
I know it's a simple one, but my ear just can't get it... what's that chord vamp at about 0.32 seconds?

Jazz music should have the spaces of the pop, I can't believe that such music is so underestimated. Adorable Kurt!

This man is a dream player.
More than a jazz guitarist, a painter.
gerardmanjoue 2 years ago 7
why should a painter be "more" (more of what?) then a jazz guitarist?
zynnetrix 2 years ago 20
This man don't play like a jazz guitarist, he don't use common lines, he uses "the color" of the musical language.
If you prefer, it's not "more", it's different.
Best Regards

@zynnetrix well you can take it another way. more then a guitar player meaning a painter and guitar player. he paints images on his guitar.

@zynnetrix probably not meant to be taken literally...get it?

@zynnetrix I think gerardmanjoue was trying to say that the depth of his craft transcends his medium. I agree

@zynnetrix Come on, I get what he's saying; no need to cut a guy down over something trivial

@zynnetrix
I guess gerardmanjoue means a painter of feelings, sensations & emotions through his music
