Go into recovery mode manually:

1. Turn off your iPhone if it isn't already.

2. Make sure iTunes is launched.

3. Hold the center button and while holding, plug your iPhone into your computer.

4. Keep holding until you get a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

and you only get cydia, installer is just gay and slows it all down

Hey,

1. You don't have to but it is strongly recommended

2. Your iPhone has probably been backed up before when you synced, but if you right click the name of your iPhone in iTunes you can back-up again.

3. yellowsn0w is an unlocking tool that allows your iphone to work with t-mobile..etc

4. Once you back up all your contacts and pictures will be saved, but your music needs to be in the library.

once you're done restoring and jailbreaking iTunes will ask you if you want to Restore to a New iPhone or Restore to a back up. Just restore to backup and you will get all your contacts back

hold home+pwer for 20 seconds until it turns off, then put your device into dfu mode

**while connected to your computer**

hold home 5 seconds, keep holding home + power button for 8 seoncds, release power button and continue holding home for 15 seconds

your ipod should be black at this point and iTunes should say "found iPod in recovery mode" press restore iTunes, then restart your computer and try the jailbreak again, it should work

Save the fle to your desktop and then browse for it through quickpwn

All right. Thank you. That worked. But how long is it supposed to stay at the Pineapple logo? I restored my iPhone 3G and made sure that I had 2.2.1 this time, and synced my applications. The logo has been on the screen for about five minutes now and it still hasn't actually come to the main screen. I have quite a few applications on my phone. Could this hinder its progress? It restarts every once in a while, but then stays at the screen. What should I do now?

It shuoldn't be staying on the pineapple logo for that long. It should go to your main screen. The number of applications should not hinder the timing that much. This may sound absurd, but try doing a iPhone restore and try restarting your PC then jailbreaking. That worked for a couple people having the same problem as you.
