For example, when the 7/8 groove starts at measure 6, the tenor part is written the same but listening closely, you can hear that they move the swisses over to drum 5 sweeping to 2 (which is ridiculously hard, by the way). The sound is clearly different but the same bar is written.

i believe its a "+" for closed, and an "o" for open above or in some cases due to spacing below the note, but I've seen muting more in concert band, i haven't gotten the chance to see that in any high school marching music I've played, but i believe the same concept is applicable. let me know if that helped or not.. :)
