It was probably good in its time, but this one definitely doesn't hold up well over time. In this film's defense, maybe it's just that I mean 46 years when I say "over time" (if I recall, the film came out in the 1964). That is an eternity in the film industry. Maybe the fact that many people still remember that this film existed after all that time is an accomplishment in and of itself?
@thegameulost a classic is a classic no matter if it was made a thousand years ago. Watch the remake (2001 maniacs, starred by Robert Englund) and then tell me if its better than the original. I personally think its pretty lame although it has more gore scenes in comparison to this. Its the orignal IDEA that holds up well over time!
It's what you DON'T show, but rather imply, that makes something truly terrifying. The viewer's imagination is far more effective than any special effect.
yeah yeah of course the rednecks are always EVIL bla bla blah keep living in your stereotyp world yankees while we are actually living the way we want
this is a thinly veiled ideology promoting misogyny, male domination (hate of women) and gang rape. why are there not any men being murdered, tied up, with blood dripping out their mouth?
@stingheart9 oh shut the fuck up you liberal pussy. this fucking movie is over 40 years old you moron. did you just come out of a cave or something? and by the way, the pendulum has swung COMPLETELY the other way. misandry is alive and well in all movies these days (now there's a word you probably NEVER were taught in college)....in case you haven't noticed. just because you took feminism 101 in your all girls school, you are NOT an expert in sociology, you self righteous little turd.
@jerrywitaj You seem very ignorant because you assume things about people without knowing them based on one YouTube comment. I went to public schools Brooklyn, NY schools, never to an all girls school, and worked my own way through a Co-Ed college. I am Moderate, not Liberal.
@jerrywitaj Also, I didn't say that misandry does not exist in movies, we are commenting on THIS particular film. It's my analysis, you don't have to agree. Hope you don't live every aspect of your life being intolerant of everyone's right to free speech. Btw, this is a word derived from the Greek words "Misos" (Hate) "Andras" (Males, or Men), I know because I speak the language and have also come across the word in literary analysis, so once again you assume w/out knowing. Just chill Jerry.
There's a historical subtext to this movie, made by a southerner during the height of the Civil Rights movement, when people from the north were coming down and making trouble. About one month after this film was released, three civil rights workers from New York were murdered in Mississippi.
See wikipedia: Mississippi_civil_rights_worker_murders
Figures a bunch of racists, narrow-minded rednecks would harm people trying to work for the betterment of humanity. I'll have to look that factiod up further.
I just saw this movie last night on holloween night on tv. This movie is twisted and kind of gory in some scenes but it has a good story too it and funny, cool on shrooms. yeah some of the guys were confed. ghost's at the end of the movie. Everyone should watch it once. the best classic movie ive seen
Yep, he did. Connie Mason was dubbed as a Playboy Playmate for its' June 1963 issue. She is also William Kerwin's (Tom in this movie) real-life wife until his death in 1989.
the sequel couldnt touch this! I had nightmares for weeks after first seeing this, as a 9 year old at the drive in. the theme song scared me as well it was so hillbillish, now I laugh at it!!!
Ah, I love this movie! It's good, tasteless fun, and easily Lewis's best film. Plus, speaking as a Southerner, it's easy to see why this was a huge hit on the drive-in circuits throughout the South: all of that gratuitous carnage against annoying Northern tourists strikes a definite chord for many of us. (-:

I think in 35 years time 2001 maniacs will probably not hold up. Gorey special effects only hold up until something more realistic comes along.

You mentioned Brigadoon. Is this a musical? If it is, it beats Sweeney Todd as the bloodiest one ever made.

I know on either emusic or rhapsody, there's the eye-popping music of Herschell Gordon Lewis and the theme from 2000 Maniacs is on it. Great track.

Dam, I gotta see this film. Love HG Lewis's films. So cheesy, so poorly acted, so gory, and so great.
A lot of fun to watch with a six pack.
