  • For me, talking without filler words often comes at a cost: I grimace a lot (especially during long awkward silent pauses) as I struggle to get my thoughts organised and this confuses the listener. =(

  • its very helpful...thanks!

  • I like your videos, you rock lady

    RESPECT

  • This is good for me, when I go on a job interview and just sociallizing regularly.

  • Hi,

Thank you for sharing this video with us. I agree that using "uh" and "like"can become distracting when listening to someone, however, I'm not sure about the example that you gave; when I ask someone a question like that and it takes the other person such a long time to answer, I would wonder if he understands me, or if he was listening to me at all. For me the "uhm" would be an indication that the person understands me and is about to answer.

  • Great help thank u

  • Hi

  • thank you very much for your videos... i appreciate your effort to help us lose the accent and learn how to talk like a newscaster

  • actually if u think about, if we learn to speak slower so pple can understand us e first time we speak, we save more time than having to repeat our sentence over and over again.

  • You're right, but for forgeingers it is way to look more like a native speaker.

  • Nice Video... very informative.

  • wow your brilliant! thanks for the effort of making this videos for all of us wanting to speak english better.

  • Thanks for the advice. I find I get shy and talk to fast in interviews.

  • the same...it is terrible! greetings!

  • I knew a guy who didn't use filler words.

He would just have a long akward silent pause while he was collecting his thoughts. lol

  • Exactly, it's better to use fillers like uhm and ahh rather than a long silence. There are some studies that shows that people who use these fillers sounds more convincing than people that don't. Just don't use fillers like "like" and "you know"

  • Actually, it is better not to use filler words at all, if possible, including "uh". When making an important point, it is better to pause slightly after it so that listeners can think about what was said and process it better.

  • your particular is a bit odd !

    Why so?

    .

  • thanks...big help...

  • how about the frequent use of "as such" or "and such"? I've heard in specially britons using this type of speech.

About the filler words, they can be very annoying indeed. Sometimes I can't watch a video if the speaker is using too many "hmmmm" or "like".
