  • She has beautiful pitch and elocution.

  • i am in love with that song.thank you.x

  • i am in love with that song

  • Talented singers like Patti Page seem to be, sadly, a thing of the past. Such a pretty melody and lyrics...thanks so much for posting this!

  • @9860313 You got it right. I would rather listen to this than that junk from Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga does not even know how to be herself. Plus Pattie Paige never used sex to sell her music, inspite of all the sexism she faced in the 1950's.

  • I know this isn't the original. I have the original too and I far prefer this version. Each to their own.

  • 19 year old Dorothy Dell introduced this beautiful ballad in a 1934 movie

"Shoot the Works" starring Jack Oakie. As fate would have it, she was

a victim in a car accident before the movie was released. She'd be

pleased to know that her song has lived on in good hands.

  • Not the original recording, with Patti recording her voice five times (though I think the label said four times) and amazingly harmonizing with herself. She got a feature in Life Magazine for it and a big hit record out of it.

  • She was fascinating, wasn't she? How many singers can you name who sang and made hits of a bunch of novelty tunes, but had a legitimately excellent voice and such impeccable phrasing? Not many, I'll bet.

  • i want to thank you. My mother in law has altimezers. We watch as she slowly forgets her life & herself. I get on in here to see if I can find something that will for a moment bring her back to us. today she did for a song. I played this song... She started to sing word per word. THank you so much.

  • I found a VERY old love letter from my Grandfather to my Grandmother asking her if she has heard "with my eyes wide open" lately... thank you for putting it on here so I can listen to the song he was talking about...

  • I usually don't like remakes but this is a very good one. The girls singing in the background are great. But the original arrangement was groundbreaking: wall-to-wall Patti Page!

  • Great oldie to recall !

  • 1:07 to 1:09--the cello drop!

  • What a Voice Love her, she brings back so many great Memories,

  • Qué delicadeza de voz melódica la de esta Patti Page. Uno podría decir que es todo un ángel desparramando exquisitas melodías inolvidables !!!!

  • Beautiful song, exquisitely sung by a wonderful artist. In both 2001 and 2002 I had the pleasure of bringing Miss Page to NH (where she maintains a second home) for a couple of AIDS benefits. She was a joy to work with in every way and when she launched into this song during her medley of hits, the audience burst into prolonged applause and cheers. She sounded almost exactly as she sounds on this recording. A truly gifted artist.

  • I've been singing in a band for over a year now. My new song to sing is this fantastic one..... that was popular when I was around 10. My Mom would ask me to sing it for the family as we were all in our respective bedrooms @ bedtime... Oh, the memories! This went on for yrs!

  • Her last name was changed to Page after the Evaporated milk.A reluctant station secretary had to sub a tardy guest star. No idea if she could sing and still no first name and the show was due in seconds. The boss took a risk began his intro. Without one bit of hesitation blurted thenew singing rage Ms Patti Page So that's the way it was. Anyone

    heard differently?

  • Beautiful!!!!!

  • "The Singing Rage Miss Pattie Page"

  • Thank you for your comment.:)

I'm in my seventies now and Patti's voice with that husky tone still makes me melt and my legs turn to jelly! :)

  • One of the last of the greats before R&R came in in the late to mid 50's........Thx.....

  • My pleasure, and thank you for your comment - by replying to it I get the chance to listen to Patti all over again.:)

  • This is lovely! I love this song, and I have (or had) a nice version by Margaret Whiting.

This one goes straight to my "favourites".

    Great posting. Thanks for sharing.

  • Although Patti is my favourite - I also enjoy Margret Whiting and I have a couple of tracks of her duetting with my favourite Lyricist - Johnny Mercer...And her father Richard Whiting was no slouch when it came to composing popular music.

Thank you for your interest and favouriting this track of Patti's.:)

  • This is still beautifully sung by Patti Page, but I prefer the 1951 version too. In fact, it was on Youtube and I saved it as a "favorite", but as many of you know, this doesn't mean a thing when it is taken off Youtube because of copyright infringement. Can anyone out there sneak by this and put the 1951 original with the Benny Goodman orchestra back on Youtube? Many of us would be happy!

  • kenkristi01,

I just wish I had a copy of Patti's 1951 version so that I could compare them.

However I'm a confirmed Patti Page fan and would quite happily listen to Patti singing from the phone directory ...her voice just does it for me.:)

    Thank you for your comment.:)

My best wishes for the future.

  • It was in 1949 that I fell in love with this song starring Patti Page, Patti Page, and Patti Page. But this is not the rendition I fell in love with, far less powerful, not carrying any of the powerful emotional content of the original. Disappointed!

  • ccaammiiittoo,

How can you possibly be disappointed with anything that Patti Page sings?

And how do you know that Patti is not multi-tracking on this version?

    trooper7h

  • There are musical things that happen during the growing up period, and Page was one of the first artists to use multitracking to great effect. And her version of "With..." just created one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard in my life!

  • ccaammiiittoo

    Quote from Wikapedia:

"Patti Page recorded her first hit single in 1947 titled "Confess." Page recorded the song at the time of a strike at her record label; therefore, background singers were not available to provide harmony vocals for the song. Instead, Page and the label decided to overdub her vocals on the song, which made it seem as if Page was harmonizing with herself. Thus, Page became the first pop artist to overdub her vocals on a song." :Unquote:

    Thanks:)

    trooper7h

  • Again, thanks. I'll never forget hearing "With..." for the first. I was, as a teen, having a cheeseburger, french fries, and a malted at a counter. It was like being assaulted with heavenly dynamite! And the song has been with me ever since. Thanks again.

  • I love this version of the song. This is the version I first heard as a kid. Unfortunately I only have a double vocal recording of this song that I don't care nearly as much for.

  • I cannot imagine any other singer singing this song after hearing this version by Patti...

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • Patti recorded this song in 1949 and again in 1959. I prefer the 1959 version. This Columbia re-recording in the 1960s is also VERY FINE.

  • I assume this is the late 50s re-make of the song, not the 1951 original.

  • Definitly not the 1951 original. Patti sang harmony with herself on the original and it was a gold record for her

  • Too bad like Rosemary Cloony and others they had to sing some of those silly novelty songs which surprisingly became big hits for them. ButWe must not forget Her great rendition of The Tennesee Waltz.

  • Georgewos,

All the big name female singers had to sing a silly/crappy song at some time in their career - It was usually on orders from their recording companies who held their contracts.

However, to the credit of all those wonderful singers they rose to the occasion and by virtue of their talent usually made the song a winner. :)

Many thanks for you comments they are appreciated. :)

  • The Andrews sisters also had a big hit with this song. It was originally in a 1934 picture called Shoot the works.

  • Ah! yes - but that smooth as warm honey voice of Patti's - with just that hint of huskyness...mmmm!
