'Window' is a metaphor for her vagine. 'Crawl inside' is very obvious, 'I'll be home, I'm coming home' etc. is orgasm. 'Home' is where she belongs, and it is her partner's inside. And she is coming.

The rest of the lyrics are less 'sexy', more 'oh the f-ing society doesn't understand this purity and greatness of our love'... the usual gay song/story theme.

@calaftheeast actually if you read her book, this song is when she was having a difficult time during her relationship with Julie Cypher while she was on tour for Yes I Am. She even says that it is the most misunderstood song of hers, just listening to the woman she loves breathing on the phone was enough to help her keep strong in the relationship despite the troubles and if they couldn't agree 'at the front door' then come to the window, ie find a way to compromise.

I am sure you are right, I am not as well-versed on this topic. But often times these cryptic songs or poems have a life of their own. It is beyond the writers' intention or influence at this point. There is something sexually enticing about these lyrics. I know I probably feel this way because I know she is a lesbian in real life. But I believe reading the lyrics alone, I would still feel the same way about the song - a woman talking about intimate penetration, love & taboo.

Melissa is cool in my book. I met her one morning @ KSHE95 here in St Louis. She was on the morning show being interviewed. During the off air conversation I mentioned to her that she was my then girlfriends favorite artist & that she loved her song "Come to my window." I had tickets to her show that night & took my g/f Cindy. The show was great & Cindy was singing along with her favorite song, "Come to my window."

My girlfriend got all excited & telling everyone sitting near us that that was her she dedicated the song to. Most ppl thought "yeah right" & didn't give it any more thought, but I knew and that's all that counted. ☺
