... also, ideally you would have a good 'sounding' room ... which takes a bit of work. A good combo of absorption and diffusion is best. Dead is better .. replace room with a widener or spreader, a short delay, and reg very (Lex medium hall is very common for this) ... good luck! =)
Heya friends … you can also put up 2 mic stands to the left and right of you, and put some thick, absorbent fabric or packing blankets up to really absorb the room sound. Also try 2-4" Owens Corning 407 fiberglass wrapped in fabric (or check out Ready Acoustics … excellent cheap room treatment) … this is more important than the mic actually. We also have a short video about this … check out our channel … SecretPros
"when your recording vocals your not just recording the voice, your also recording every other noise that happens in the room" later on..... "your goal is to record the vocals and nothing else" is it just me or is this a slight contradiction?

What did she say her name was?? Chain a Bafoon.... That's sounds about right for, Inexpert village. They really ought to chain that one up, before it tries to move itself into real television.
Where do they find these people from.. I've never seen a less expert mob of morons than they parade in front of us on Expert Village.
Classic example of how to make money from knowing absolutely nothing!!!
So, ''how to record vocals at home'' doesn't give ANY tips on mics, preamps, compression, doubling vocals or anything else except...... what sort of room the vocals should be recorded it.... really? Also, only an idiot would choose a small room. Visit Sugar Hill studios in Houston Texas. The room that they record vocals in is about the size of a large living room with a 15ft ceiling..... thats not a closet!
Okay so i am trying to do a cover and i want to have my voice used instead of whoever im covering...like if i did BMTH instead of oli sykes i would want my woice in the song anyone know how to do that?
@easternbud yeah download Audacity online (it's free) then type into youtube "how to remove vocals with audacity" and it will show you how to get rid of vocals in the song, it works for every song I've tried so far. Which BMTH song are you planning on covering btw? I'm jw because I do covers of them too.
Come on guys. I'm sure that these tips help someone who's starting out. It's not like she's telling us false information about the optimal recording environment. And you elitists should consider that not many people want to spend hundreds on soundproofing a room for vocals.
@Samixelo yeaaa you deleted your comment because you said "So? She didn't make a statement that she would be a mixing expert, or that she would be a expert of any kind. " and then you realized that the name of this channel is called EXPERTvillage.. haha
@LBProductions511 Yeah. Sorry for saying that. If you read the description, it says that she is a home studio engineer for 4 years. She definetly should know how to place her monitors. :P I posted the comment, then read the description, then thought: awww dammit I was wrong..
We must close the window when we record the voice! It's very important, uhm, uhm!! :)))))))))) How much villagepeople make me smile!!!!!! oh sorry EXPERTvillage :))))
@SMASHDOTFAM way to be sexist, you think women don't know anything about music eh? well this is one person. it's a basic video it's not supposed to be some detailed thing. you don't care for it, go teach yourself, but you're not gonna become famous by learning how to record from youtube!
This is an good example of "talking about books you haven't read". Not saying that she doesn't know what shes doing (mind you, she probably DOENS'T), its just that anyone else could tell me the same thing.
This video is pure shit. Its so much shit that it makes the bigger pile than the one at the scientology head office. Now thats saying something.
I said what I said based on the contents of the video. Sorry if I am comming across to you as a troll at the moment, but I just don't like being unjustly labelled as "sexist", if that is what you are implying.
Also, if my previous comment has offended you or anyone else (apart from this video and expert village), by comming across as sexist, I would like to add that I did not do so knowingly, and therefore apologize.
yea Ill just use my clothes in my closet to muffle the sound...yea and then ill hold a candle in there to help me see the damn thing, excellent advice
guys seem to give bad comments about this, a lot of recording was done in bath rooms, small rooms and stuff, Joe Meek is just one producer that made a whole recording studio in a small flat in london.. and had Number 1 hits
The beatles recorded a whole album on a four track..
Les Pual did most of his early recordings in a small bedroom using a recorder which he made him self, with marry ford singing in the cupboard.
so maybe have a look in the history books before you pass judgment .
@aevans692 well thats just the proof that the quality isn't everything...I like Beatles but the sound quality is just horrible...on the other side, back then the equipment was just horribly expensive. Sometimes is the sound out of a bathroom just the right effect. The mostPOPmusic today is just screwed up, the final mix is just horible with the saturation all over. I started to listen some Hungarian orchestral folk music. The recording was probably made with 4 mics but better than enything else.
PLEASE FOR THE LIFE OF ME STOP PUTTING OUT THESE USELESS VIDEOS WITH WRONG INFORMATION ! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Read a book on audio, any book... even magazines, just don't watch these videos because they are filled with wrong information. She was the "best" instructor so far, and she had NOTHING to give information wise that will help you.
wrong? whats wrong with it? she is absolutely correct in the fact that unless you want natural reverb of a specific room, than you want to muffle the sound as much as possible to prevent recording ambient noise from ruining the mix. The only thing she is slightly wrong about was room reverb permanently destroying the vocal track. Depending on the levels, you can clean that up, but that was the thing she was wrong about.
I just can't get over how unbelievably horrible the production of these videos are, the audio in this video is the worst. At least keep the audio levels in the same zip code from clip to clip! These audio "experts" can't manage that?
Know what these videos remind me of? When i'm in LA Fitness and see some of the girls who are personal trainers.. but it looks like they should be "personally training" someone to win a pie eating competition. You don't deserve to teach or train someone when you need the same training, that's just passing info along.
If you want good sound invest in acoustic treatment. I read a book about acoustics, and towels and blankets do virtually nothing for the room sound. Also, it is not always desirable to have a "dead" sounding room. It is actually better to have controlled "liveness" in the recording booth, it adds intimacy to the sound instead of taking everything away from it.
expert village is totaly crap... 1st thr vdos r less than 2 minutes and then wt they r telling is totaly useless. thrs nothing new in these expert village tutorials other than the things every kid knows about home recording.

@lochnarus yes, see, i agree with you--and it's not the fact that she's a woman that makes them bad, people! it's just the way expertvillage does crud like this!
1- she don't give any info on condenser or dynamic mics.
2-towels and blankets can isolate the sound, but make it sound dead. Building a mobile voice cab is a better investiment.just goole it.
3-Her monitor placement is far from wrong, its horrible. And the KRK USER MANUAL that shure comes with each monitor shows the correct monitor placement.
record in the closet..... that really makes sense. Put towels on the wall, I'm going to build a towel closet that i'm comfortable with. Put some nice murals on the wall. Perhaps even put a light in there.
u need a good mic, a condensor mic, filter 4 it, if u have a room or a closet, lol. then get soundproof foam, u need an amp orfirewire digital audio interface to get a good signal 4 tha mic, and set ur mic volume low on the computer to avoid distortion.
get a decent condensor mic, pad your closed for it. get a preamp for it that is a direct input. hook it all up. and get any program u can to record the wav audio into.
Hi this is Shana Bethune and here i am with yet another USELESS video telling you something that you already know in a more simple way.

Bon Jovi records the vocals in the kitchen located in their vicious studio. It has hardly no padding, angled glass panes and the vocals are laid down dry.
Why don't you just build an iso booth? It only takes really heavy blankets hung properly or 4 walls and sound dampening foam. Not that hard.
