Thank you Very Much for posting this treasure!!! I remember this type of Record from my Grandmother and my childhood! Can you tell me the name of the company of this record..The Name of the Manufacturer before "Melodiya" What's use to be the name of the Company?? Thank you Very Much!
I would NEVER have thought such music would've been allowed in Russia in 1939! Decadent capitalist evil stuff.
I continue to be amazed at how American popular culture was so incredibly influential, especially in places that officially opposed it and tried to keep it out.
@240252 I know that "Joseph, Joseph" is not an American song. Swing music, however, IS very definitely American. It's not the origin of the song that I referred to, it's the style of how it was performed on this record.
It's amazing how such a brutish bunch as the Stalinists could be so infatuated with music so full of life! I guess after a hard day's Purge all you can do is let your hair down and swing!
The Russian jazz players played under huge obstacles, often criticized by the communist party officials, and eventually many of them were forbidden to play jazz and/or sent to prison. Just because for a few years they were allowed to play swing doesn't mean that the musicians were somehow part and parcel of the Soviet regime.
@VChapaev if you're so fucking clever and think that jazz is not real music listen to coltrane and miles davis a kind of blue, then listen to ornette coleman and roland kirk and finally the russian great vladimir chekasin.and oh- django reinhardt, wes montgomery, charliue parker and many , many more.
Interesting, but sad when you think that a year or two beforehand, tens of thousands of so-called "Trotskyites" had been killed in the Russian purges.

@hebneh The tune "Joseph Joseph" is NOT American. It is old Jewish song "Yos'l Yos'l"
