@smfbiz We had one of the huge record players that looked more like a buffet, it was so big, and the albums were in there, early 60s, I was about 5, and I played his vinyl every day just for this song!!! Being an Italian, we also had a lot of Perry Como, Dean Martin and Old Blue Eyes. I just liked him the best!!!!!
This has been my favorite Andy Williams song since I first heard it in the early 60's. I have my father to thank for my musical tastes, whether it be music from the 30's thru the sixties my fathers taste in music influences me to this day. Ella, Sinatra, Mathis, Brubeck, Mancini, etc, I listen to the greats even today.
I LOVE this song! When I heard it, I turned it UP! It is one of my favorites. Always will be. Thank you for posting. I'm 54 now. I quit playing music loud a long time ago. Todays "music" just doesn't measure up.
I was seven years old, sitting in the back seat of a big blue Chevy Impala when I first heard this. The song, and the moment, stuck with me forever. Maybe it was the spooky chord changes and sinuous melody. Interesting to find out it was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shulman.
@Nocaro a little snippy, ehh? geesh...just be glad people are asking and are interested. Like Glen Campbell too? He did a great song called "Try A Little Kindness"....give it a spin..and listen.
@AussiesRokTheWest LOL, not "snippy" at all. Did it ever occur to you that many people have never noticed these "notes" attached to my posts? Lots of great info in them and I was just making sure they were aware of it.
The English Beat version is really great also. But I must say that after digging the EB version for 20 years I think I like this better. As a kid I thought this was so corny. Now I'm 46 and I'm totally off into it.
A perfect pop hit. For some reason, i always thought that this song was done by Steve Lawrence. Thank you for clearing THAT up. Used to listen to this while riding in my Dad's 1959 Ford station wagon on trips from Hartford, CT to Albany, NY. What a smooth voice......
@kneeldiamond Bobby Darin should probably be in the top there, ehh bub? I can see by yer name ya might a bit bias though so I'll refrain from debate ;)
what a great song, arrangement, and great voice of andy williams...."mr rockabilly 70" brings up a good point about the female back up singers...something that is overlooked in judging a song...they do lend a haunting quality to this great song....good observation mr rockabilly....i was thinkign the same thing when i was listening to this song...one of the best songs ever by a great voice...
Thank you, I'm glad you agree. The female back up singers do a wonderful job on this track and it's something that's always appealed to me ever since I first heard this song being played by my father as a kid in the 70's.
Yes, they are excellent. I had a listen to the Skeeter Davis version and while she does a credible version of this song, I still prefer Andys' original. The back up singers on her version are just as good as the girls on this song. These back up singers aren't given the full credit and praise they deserve on some of these old songs which is a bit of shame in my opinion because they can turn quite an ordinary song into something really good and worthwhile listening to.
Wow, thank you so much for this video from the greatest singer of all. Love it! Saw him in concert a couple of years ago in Plymouth, UK and he was simply still amazing, note perfect. Thanks Andy for a lifetime of wonderul emeories
This and "Moon River" would have to be my two favourite Andy Williams songs. The man is a legend and has a great voice. One thing that's always captivated me about this song in particular are the female back up singers. They give this song a hauntingly melodic feel to it that is just fantastic. Never get tired of listenting to this great song.
Spring of '63, I was 16 y/o a Junior in High School, & ohhh did I sing this to a girl named Gail--my 1st serious crush. What times they were. Wolfsky9
It's funny how many of these songs covered by Andy Williams, I first heard covered by Patti Page. I love the voice of both and don't have a preference.
What a first rate presentation of Andy Williams and what "mellowroast" has appropriately labeled, a "Major classic"! I am as impressed with Nocaro's knowledge of music (and the music industry) as I am with the consistent high quality of his presentations. Since his contribution to this site represents nothing short of a virtual gold mine, I am one of his myriad appreciative subscribers.
@MysticSojourner Wow, I'm very appreciative of your kind comments, but I badly need to redo some of my earlier videos when I was experimenting with the process, but some of them have so many views already that I'm afraid to. This particular one turned out well, however...thanks...Lanny (Nocaro)
To Cindy, I'll find somebody, wait and see, who am I kidding?, only me, Cause no one else could take your place, Guess that I 'am just a hopeless case. I Can"t get Used To Losing You, no matter what I try to do, Gonna live my whole life through, Loving You!!. I still love and miss you baby, RIP.
This is for my late girlfriend Cindy Lou Schmidt (1956-2002). She left me in 1982 after 3 years together. 1 week after she left, I played this 45 reissue on my STEREO. That's how I felt then, and that's how I feel now since the day she died. I still love her. To Cindy, I Can"t Get Used To Losing You, no matter what I try to do, gonna live my whole life through, Loving You. RIP Baby, I miss you.
Lanny-I really enjoy your histories that you include with your downloads, especially when it includes info regarding my favorite genre-beach and shag, eg the Drifters. Question: Was this song an example of the early technology of sound-on-sound with Andy singing harmony with himself(ex: Neil Sedaka)?
@BeachMusicLvr Actually the process of "over-dubbing" voices became popular when Les Paul used it extensively on many of his recordings with Mary Ford which date back to the late 40's and early 50's (Listen to Mary's voice on "How High The Moon"). Buddy Holly also used it a lot as well as Neil Sedaka, Connie Francis, etc. Pomus and Shuman LOVED "strings" which is evident on this recording and many of the songs they wrote for The Drifters...good to hear from you...Lanny (Nocaro)
