The big problem they have with Avatar, of course, is "Eywa" the "Godess" of the Navi', who encompasses all life on Pandora.

Avatar is (just my opinion) one of the best movies ever made. Obvious as hell plotline, and there is some poor acting throughout, although not alot. But I agree with FBoobieTubie about the Vatican thing.

They probably wouldn't have liked the story of Pocahontas either: it would have went against their efforts of converting the savage red people. It might have also made the settlers sensitive to the systematic genocide and destruction of their culture, and the sexual exploitation, and much later sterilization, that we know took place. Actually, I see it a bit differently. While people can call the vatican organized religion, I see this movie nothing but promoting exactly that - pantheism, another form of organized religion. I have yet to see the Vatican making a movie as big as this to promote Christianity. James Cameron, who is refuted time and time again probabilistically, from his "Jesus Tomb" and all the rest of his dressed up stories, did it again with this one.

The big problem they have with Avatar, of course, is "Eywa" the "Godess" of the Navi', who encompasses all life on Pandora.
It turns out that all of the trees on Pandora are interconnected electrically, forming what is essentially an all-knowing planet-sized consciousness. In turn, the Navi and other creatures can link to Eywa using their ponytails like USB. It's the physical concept of Eywa that scares the Church.

Avatar is (just my opinion) one of the best movies ever made. Obvious as hell plotline, and there is some poor acting throughout, although not alot. But I agree with FBoobieTubie about the Vatican thing.
Why waste the time and effort criticizing a movie based in (get this) someones imagination, and totally abandon everything they should actually be putting some effort into righting. Such as their priesthood (although admittedly not all of it) raping young boys... Makes no sense to me.

They probably wouldn't have liked the story of Pocahontas either: it would have went against their efforts of converting the savage red people. It might have also made the settlers sensitive to the systematic genocide and destruction of their culture, and the sexual exploitation, and much later sterilization, that we know took place. I have respect for the Church and every one elses beliefs but saying things against Avatar when it has so many morally correct messages in it is very wrong in my opinion. Watch Avatar (IMAX 3D if you can) and learn to love your fellow animals and planet :) a few in the Vatican seem to have not been able to reach this level of enlightenment yet

They should be focusing on how to right the terrible emotional and psychological damages they have done to countless children who are now fucked-up adults because of the catholic clergy's sex molestations. I know it's been said, but it can't be said enough: who cares what the Vatican thinks? Their influence shrinks as the world becomes educated. As a former catholic I agree with you when you say that tradition is something foundamental about religion.
But, I found pretty early that most of the people around me had no clue about history and science. When I gently faced them with something like the drift of the continents, some took it very badly.
Most of them knows nothing about the dark ages or simply the origins of their religion. Ignorance is a big part of religion's hold. But this is not a complete explanation, i agree.

Of course the Vatican is criticizing Avatar! The church has literally played the part of the militaristic/imperialistic force of western civilization for hundreds of years in all of Latin America, it's no coincidence that the movie is set in a rain forest. Actually, I see it a bit differently. While people can call the vatican organized religion, I see this movie nothing but promoting exactly that - pantheism, another form of organized religion. I have yet to see the Vatican making a movie as big as this to promote Christianity. James Cameron, who is refuted time and time again probabilistically, from his "Jesus Tomb" and all the rest of his dressed up stories, did it again with this one.

brianh - the Catholic Church laid the foundation of Western Civilisation - without which you pagans would be still living in mud huts! The West was based in the Incarnation ie the fact that Christ is God Himself! Without this the West is lacking direction definiton and is quickly dying! That's what happens to pagans who reject God!

Go and get a mud hut yourself - and when you get a tootache or cancer ask mother earth to cure it for you and see what she will do LOL! We can't just live - cos the elements are against us! Easily known you live a sheltered life - bestowed on you by gnerations of Christians! And its growth or decline - nothing stands still! Why so many questions? All I seem to do is answer questions for dumb atheists - they have no answers of their own - except useless ones!
