The first few levels can simply be rolled over, and you get quite a few extra lives in the process. I had at least 10 or so on average...

And when you get to the last battle, you get unlimited attempts if you know that there's a 1 up shroom just before the pipe... take it every time!

What this game over means is, if you get a game over, the screen will turn red, and Mario will come out with a disapointed face, then when the song goes fast, the screen will turn blue again, and Mario's face will be happy, and you can start the game again. That's what it means.
