I think Ezra Levant draws a lot of attention because his views and abrasiveness are more, well, American, and that doesn't sit well with many Canadians. Someone like a Bill O'Reilly or an Ann Coulter will have a definite following in America, but a point of view like that in Canada would be relegated to the fringe. That being said, a Provincial Court, not a human rights' tribunal is the place to see if any crime was truly committed. And clearly, no crime was committed, in my opinion.

The problem that necessitates this sort of thing is that right wing governments get in power, start acting like liberals, trying to control people. Conservatives end up protecting the interests of the wealthy instead of the integrity of the free market, and that makes it necessary for some to swing the pendulum in the other direction for an indefinite period. Politicians mess things up, and then other politicians want reparations rather than to set things right.
The Human Rights Commissions are an embarrassment to Canada the way they have morphed into a forum by which to bankrupt unpopular speakers. And the media support was near universal in what I read, the only publication I saw side with the commission was a weekly here in Toronto called Now Magazine. The problem that necessitates this sort of thing is that right wing governments get in power, start acting like liberals, trying to control people. Conservatives end up protecting the interests of the wealthy instead of the integrity of the free market, and that makes it necessary for some to swing the pendulum in the other direction for an indefinite period. Politicians mess things up, and then other politicians want reparations rather than to set things right.

The Human Rights Commissions are an embarrassment to Canada the way they have morphed into a forum by which to bankrupt unpopular speakers. And the media support was near universal in what I read, the only publication I saw side with the commission was a weekly here in Toronto called Now Magazine. I doubt I agree with Levant on more then 1% of all issues but the idea that he has to answer to anyone in the government for publishing a cartoon is absurd.

I wish Ezra hadn't let Beck cast Canada in such a negative light.
...But I agree that the Human Rights Commissions need to be dismantled, at least with respect to their power to investigate and punish "hate speech."
They probably still have a role to play in cases where, for example, someone is fired without cause or turned down as a tenant on the basis of race or some other irrelevant personal characteristic.
