It's scenes like this that made The Wire such a great show. So well written and acted, even little things like the half smirk on Marlo's face and the look back to Chris. Amazing programme.
I love the way Marlo looks at chris as if to say ''this kid's okay, we should keep an eye on him'' + in a way you kinda feel Marlo had a little respect for him for not taking his money.
he knew mike wasnt a punk but what kills me was mike didnt want to take the money cause he didnt want to have nothin to do with them but ends up joining them any ways dont figure
"Ain't no thing shorty, we cool" This is the only time in the whole show that Marlo softened his voice for anyone. He almost seemed like an approachable human being for those 5 seconds. This for me is one of the reasons Michael went to him and Chris on the playground a few weeks later. Marlo was a calculating, clever dude.
Marlo was expecting a hostile response or an expression of defeat from Michael, which he didn't get. But what he did get was a look of "If I was old enough I would kick your ass, but you got the upper hand". Since Marlo didn't get the typical "wimp" response he was duly impressed!! This youngster stood up to me without speaking. Classic scene!
all marlo cared about was making his name ring out. he did everything to get the strongest rep. but he had no character. ppl feared him but they didnt respect him. for the most part omar was a 1 man wrecking crew, but like he said " a man gotta have a code" because omar lived by a certain code of honor( even by street terms). his name rang out even after he was killed and he became a legend. its like a King who isnt loved by the kingdom but a hero peasent who is. its your classic story of honor
@CanadianChronic2121 how can namond be cutty he never had heart and he couldn't fight i agree with all the rest randy maybe after he got his weight up
namond is like cutty because he had to realize he had heart ( choosing not to be in the game ) the same way cutty did ( by opening up a gym instead of being a soldier ) & trying to connect with the kids & keep them off the corners .
Monk - 'Little n----z ain't up to no good is ya!? - LOL, I remember when the bigger guys in the neighborhood use to say that to me and the youngin's I used ta run with.. LOL...
right at the end when namond says he'll take any motherfuckers money if he giving it away. exactly what clay davis said. how many times do you see this in the wire and sopranos where such contrasting characters say the same lines.
Damn! I just peeped the last lil line from young boy.."I'll take any muthafucka money if he givin it away now".....Quick quiz qho else said that before???? Hint, shhiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeiiiT!
@targetegrat Never noticed this either. But did you also notice how Namond could be "the next Clay Davis" by the end of the series just as Michael is the next omar and Dukie the next Bubbles? I mean obviously they're not exactly the same, but I think the series was trying to show how the problems with B-more stay the same if no one changes anything.
@targetegrat good eye man! Never noticed that. You think he could become the next Senator? With that private school education, seems like Namond could be next in line for that.
the look on marlos face at 2:43 is almost like a surprised/impressed look, michael just stood up for himself to the leader of the top drug gang in west baltimore, it would be hard not to be impressed by that, especially if it was you were marlo. michael had the potentional to be anything kinda like the haniken skywalker of baltimore, but he joins the darkside because of his hatred for his mothers boyfriend.
I love Michael only looks Marlo in the eye after he calls him a bitch, and you can see that Marlo didn't expect that and he's a little impressed and that's when he takes up an interest in Michael.
Also one of my favourite little details is how Clay Davis repeats Namond's last line word for word in the very same episode.
It's the little things that make the show so special
@NBAlegends many characters in the show have similarities to them, like you said clay and namond. same with bunny and stringer, before stringer gets executed and before bunny becomes the sacrifical lamb and gets demoted they both say the same thing, "get on with it motherfu" and are both interrupted before they can finish. they are both very similar in their views of the drug game. the more obvious ones are michael and omar, bubbles and dukie. probably the smartest show ever
@NBAlegends omar had a code and did things with a purpose. michael questioned why people had to die because of senseless shit. from the start you could see michael sees outside of the box.
In that scene Michael reminds me a lot of myself. That cynical distrust, that pride in not taking nothing from noone if it is a handout. No need to say anything to Marlo, just the action of rejection itself spoke volumes. There also was smartness in not taking part in the conversation. Silence can often convey a lot more than mere words.
I take it you have either followed my entire life and the trials therein to make such an assessment, or you are just a troll with a lot of internet courage. Either way, you shut the fuck up and mind your business.
This scene is a serious one when micheal looked at marlo, marlo could tell this kid got fire in him thats why marlo reacted the way he did and recruited him, body language, actions it does'nt show your wit it shows what your ABOUT.
You ever notice Clay Davis says the same exact thing when he's talking to Royce after he gets accused of money laundering as Namond does at the end? "Sheeeit, I'll take any motherfucker's money if he's givin' it away!" Interesting connection... Nay was a smart kid. You'd hope he wouldn't get caught doing stupid shit like Davis was though... as long as Colvin raised him right, which he would have.
namond was the smartest out of all of them. he got outta the game and is gonna become the new clay davis. he said the exact same thing as him and will be making his money downtown. Then the gangstas aint gonna be able to touch him like when stringer told slim to kill clay davies. neither will the police coz of all the politics
shit namond is just like this portugal little street niggas there aint no special cclasses with cops in here we got to beat this dudes in the face quit a lot godammit
wait... Marlo talks to Michael without nobody next to him while Michael crew right there but didn't talk to Bodie when he has his crew cross the street and little down the block lol
@WiseGuy5674 funny i was just about to post that same thing. its telling cuz when Michael says why he doesnt take the money its because he doesnt like owing people for shit. this emphasizes an underlying theme of the series which is that career politicians will take money from anyone giving it away and the politicians in turn give favorable accomidations to these campaign donors ie: andy krawcyk, maurice webber, ed bowers etc...
Isn't what Namond says at the end an exact copy of what Clay Davis said? "I'll take any motherfuckers money if he's giving it away." Sheeeeit. Namond could be the next Senator.

@uunit08 i dunno man remember the security guard he had chris and snoop put in da vacants. The only real soldiers who respected people not in da game was Avon and Omar. Marlo was da most cold hearted nigga in da game. Just straight ruthless.
mike showed heart by looking him dead in the eye when marlow tried to pull his card. mike had no idea he was talking to a master mind killer. marlow like that. not only the fact that he didnt take his money he stood up to him in a way kind of. mike was smart.marlow saw the poteintal in mike. this was one of my favorite scenes.
This was a great scene. A lot going on between the lines. Marlo 'saw' something in Michael. Sensed his potential. It's funny when a 'bad guy' from the streets 'sees' something in someone else. He's thinking about making him a 'soldier' but a deeper part of him is seeing something else... Great scene from the 'street', that actuall happens at times...
I don't know how many crews do this sorta thing in the US but a lot of latin american and south american crews will give handouts to the public to keep them on their side as opposed to the police who probably don't do shit to help them.
it ain't nothing new. The traditional old school sicilian mafia did this too. They even solved peoples disputes too, policing the community in a kind of way.. It was like that until they decided to use their power solely for getting rich..
The reality of season 4 is that in the hood there's always a Namond, a Chris, a Snoop, a Marlo, A Monk, Bodie, Poot, Randy, Michael or Dukie in the game. Growing up in poverty in the hood is a terrible thing, but without characters like this there is no hood. There is no game,
marlo used a tactic to try and friend up michael after he seen he wasnt a bitch ass punk... thats why he starts smilin and turns to chris (like are you seeing this)
Michael is being cool but then he gives him that look when Marlo calls him a bitch-ass punk. That look lets Marlo know that Michael ain't no bitch-ass punk!!
Marlo isn't being "kind hearted", handing out money like that is good business. The people will trust you more than the police, which is a better way of getting support than simply fear.
It's a tactic of every true resistance movement, why do you think Hamas has such high support in Gaza? They fund all this charitable work. And then the government uses strong arm tactics to try and break the groups and the population turns to the group even more.
@mrmootheirrev everyone in that show had good and bad qualities to them, except for marlo (possibly stringer as well), i couldnt find one in him, shit you can find it in even chris and snoop (maybe snoop).
marlo was such a bitch.. if he didnt have Chris on his side he wouldve been got popped.. Mike was the truth, he gave him that look like i a beat yo ass nigga.. lol
That moment with Micheal was probably the only time you see Marlo feel defeat and even a bit of fear throughout the entire episode. That look Michael gave him said it all.
Not sure how authentic that is in the US but that sort of thing is done in Brazil. Dealers will hand out money t to people living in their territory so they trust them over the police.
lil niggas aint up to no good is you?

The scene is telling considering that Mike is going to know be robbing people like Marlo and giving real charity to people like Omar did.

shinsta123 2 years ago
That moment with Micheal was probably the only time you see Marlo feel defeat and even a bit of fear throughout the entire episode. That look Michael gave him said it all.

Not sure how authentic that is in the US but that sort of thing is done in Brazil. Dealers will hand out money t to people living in their territory so they trust them over the police.

Love how Michael didn't say anything, just looked at him. Marlo clearly wasn't intimidated but he certainly respected him for it.
