Where was this collecting site? I am friend with Jan and Trey Woodward have you ever collected there? That is some of the finest red plume I have ever seen. I will be out in Alpine TX this April selling my stuff, come on by. I am Lonewolf
Oh sorry... you're too young to be Mitch. Yes, this is Woodward Ranch on the East side accross the Highway. My freinds and I are planning another trip there in the Spring of 2010.
I don't think I can make the show, unfortunately. I'll have to look up the dates to know for sure. I'll be at WWR in mid March. Will be my 5th time, love the place and have become friends w/Jaysen and Trey as well, real good people! I can't seem to get enough of the agates there. I have about 500lbs in my garage right now! I should post a vid of the plume cabs I've cut.
Me and my boys used to camp by the creek but now you cannot do that anymore. It took some yahoos to go and trash the place and cause a bunch of drama with the local police to have ol Jan and Trey to say no more camping down at the creek. We live in Phoenix and take the 700 mile road trip out. We stay at the Antelope Lodge just getting into Alpine. From there we head to the ranch and set up the camping equipment and rock hound fish the creek and enjoy the wild life. Post some of your cabs.
Funny you should mention the Yahoos. I was involved in that mess. We were staying in the cabin by the creek when the kids who were camping started going crazy. One of the girls who was camping tried to run over her boyfriend with the vehicle they drove in. I had to go wake up Trey to call the Sherrif. It was quite a night to say the least.
Agate normally forms in Lava beds. Air pockets in the Lava allows water laiden with Silica to collect and solidify. Lake Superior agates are worn and polished by water action, the Lava beds they formed in are long gone. Lakers are some of the oldest agates on the planet.
I went hunting in Glade Park, Colorado, at 8500 feet above sea level, and the ones I found were similar to the lake agates.
There weren't as many bands stacked on top of each other, but there were some, and there were big color variations. I found one near Lake Superior, in Michigan, when I was visiting there. It was just a small piece, but it was my first.
I just bought a rock tumbler. I need to hook it up and see what I get!
dear .will you cut them at home and curve and polish them ... too ?

Yes. I have a slab saw and I cut cabochons from the material I collect there. I make wire wrapped pendants and bezel set pendants as well...

So, why aren't they like lake superior agates?
I went agate hunting in Colorado, but I thought that they were mostly polished...
