Just amazing, Petar! I recall having requested or suggested this tune from you a few years back (if memory serves!!). Tough song, and you just nailed it at the highest level. Very, very cool. Townshend should call you!
BRAVO! Ive been playing for 30 years and still completely incompetent in the ability to figure our , buy listening, exactly what is being played. This is one of my favorite drum recordings and you have now given me insight on how it was composed.
And to weckl35 you must study the masters before developing your own style.
Nice job, Petar. As far as "parroting" goes, let's ALL remember that EVERYONE steals (some borrow and bring it back when they're finished) from everyone. We all learn from each other and the benefit of what's available at the present time from those who came before us. Tomorrow will be different and those that follow us will have the privilege of our inspiration. What YOU bring is what you've learned, interpreted by you from those who inspired you in the first place...
hi,i´m just a german kraut, interrested in music, specially in guitars and drums and i´m a big fan of the who and pete townshend. Simon´s drumming is marvelous, i wonder how you managed copying it such preciously. Any advice for me?
@tinchen62 Just listen to the music, and feel all the note the other players are playing, then reflect on your playing and how it relates,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,after while you just fall into the groove!
@Riouel Hi man! thanks for tuning in. It's a 17 ziljdan china on the left, and a 18" wuhan with rivets drilled into it on the right. The Wuhan is SOOOO loud if you nail it,,,,,,,so the rivets allow the trashy sound to be made at much lower volume levels. the trashy little things at 3:18 is a broken wuhan and abroken splash laid one on top pf the other to make MY TRASH CAN LID as i call it
@froggpond1 Your "trash can lid" stack is one of the coolest white noise effects I've heard. Great job. I had never heard this song before. But I'm now a fan of this track and also a fan of your drumming. Very inspirational. I guess I need to get on listening to some Pete Townsend solo stuff. I've apparently been missing out. Great job.
Great stuff man...indeed! This is a tough groove. I learned it many years ago, but haven't played it for years. You have a nice sound on the kit. I don't necessarily agree about parroting another drummer as being a negative--it's how you learn.
At any time, you are either limited by technique, or imagination. Play something you don't know because it challenges you, and then as you learn what the other drummer played, make it your own. It's how you grow.
@oddtimesolutions I couldn't agree more.....I say I ape Simon,,, ape/ parrot same thing. It's tough to find players let alone good tunes to try. If you have any ideas or think there is a session happening that could use me I am all ears.
DAMN THAT WAS GOOD MAN!!!! i ussually only go near metal drumming but this amazed me enirely. well done and i love your open hand sparts especially so thanks dude for an awesome video and keep it rockin man
I really enjoy this drumming and have watched it many, many times. I especially appreciate the bright and crisp quality of the sound. I'll be sure to continue to watch it - thank you - SD
I really enjoy this drumming and have watched it many, many times. I especially appreciate the bright and crisp quality of the sound. I'll be sure to continue to watch it - thank you - SD
My brother is a professional studio drummer of over 25 years and he references Simon Phillips and plays this song still because it took him much practice to learn it. His fave drums are Simon Phillips, Neil Peart and Tim Alexander... I like your version here and I say keep playing and posting man! If it still inspires you why stop? Good job on the 16th notes too.
Ok this was a very tight grove...and an open handed player to boot..nice ...the sound was great and the vid was HQ and clean...all in all a nice presentation.
@Minionuup Actually Frogmann is doing the groove a little bit different then Simon.. Simon plays ghostnotes on the snare, and not that hihat-paradiddle-thing..
Wonderfully done! I used to play keys in a band that played this cover and it was always a blast to play - such powerful builds and releases. On a related note, I had the opportunity to see the great Simon Phillips just last year playing drums alongside another great player - Marco Minnemann. This was all part of Eddie Jobson's traveling UZ project. It was awesome!!! So is your playing - thanks for posting this!
I always felt that a very important aspect of percussion was to to maintain a sense of "grounding" in a musical piece. While the melody soared, the drums kept the "sound on the ground"...you did this with grace and elegance and I very much enjoy viewing your video from time to time.
When I click on a clip entitled - GIVE BLOOD : Pete Townshend,
It would be nice if it wasn't something like this,
You're not the only one to do this and I certainly agree with your evaluation of Mr. Phillips, which is why I came to this clip in the 1st place.
Again, all due respect, I just wish you folks would find another avenure for your outlet or at the very least clearly identify this is not the actual artist.
Wow...nailed the parts and also the groove. Fluid and nuanced...not merely aping. You have the goods...I used to play the Gilmour parts on guitar and loved it....but would gladly give up what skills I have left on guitar to play like this on drums. (I'm a basher, at best!) The drummer in the band I was in loved playing this and I always knew why. Bravo, sir!
Great job! Very inspirational! I am a 42 year old ex drummer who is getting back in the game after a 25 year hiatus. You make me want to play again. This tune came out about the time I walked away from drumming. I am looking forward to trying to emulate you and Jeff Porcaro among others. Almost have my kit together again. And when I get back in the groove, I'm going to post some videos. Once again man, great job and nice kit.
WOW! I must say I disagree with the statement Ex Drummer,,,,,,,Once a drummer always a drummer!!!
I too was off for many years.......13 to be exact. I stepped back into playing in 2002, and just hacked around for a couple of years, then found myself being asked to play more and more.....so,,here I am,,,,,,,,,,46. I hope you follow your heart and get back in the saddle!
Hey Froggpond1. Please tell me you drum professionally. You absolutely kick ass on this song. I have been drumming for almost 30 years on and off and you nailed it. Did you switch sides for your ride on this song? I didn't see one on the right side of the set.
Hi Mercey12.........at this time I am not playing any more than the odd session and some jingle work.........but would love to do more. Thanks for the comps,, I am left handed playing a right handed kit,,,, just developed that way.
Awesome. I'm a huge Townshend fan and Simon's drumming on Pete's albums is always amazing. Known for his creativity, especially with his fill-in work, Simon is a legend. He's also toured with Toto and there's an amazing solo here on youtube from a show. You did a superb job on this song.
Thank you....I heard this tune WAAAAY back and I was riveted. When I tried playing it years ago it just kind of came together, I didn't knw who Simon Phillips was or that I play like him left orientation on a right handed kit. I wasn't until the late 90's that I realized his style. Then everything made sense. I follow him now, AAA player! A thinker like Porcaro selective in his parts, and always RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!!
This is one of my all time favourite drum tracks and you pretty much nail it. Watching Simon Phllips do this on the Deep End vid is mesmerising. Thanks for reminding me how great it is.
Fascinating! My humble proposal for the "optimization" of the video's title: Insert an h into Townsend (Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend aka Pete Townshend).
That's really great drumming. You have the left hand lead down, like Simon, buy may I suggest you not play the hihat w/ two hands, try it w/ just your left and play ghost notes w/ your right on the snare. Also try to syncopate it a little. Otherwise this it outstanding! (I know I couldn't do it)
You are dead on about the ghosts,,,,,,,,,,I turned it into a h/h exercise and just left it that way.
wandering off of the original is tough sonically,,,,, you would still hear the source track come through where I would not be playing. In some time i may repost it with those tennets in mind.
Oh and one more thing. In MY opinion, playing this style on a single kick, I believe adds to the "stiff" appearance that one guy was talking about. Intensity is great, but just that extra leg room seems to make a visible difference. I have had comments just like that when I am on the single kick kit as opposed to my double kick kit. Either way, it rocked and that was all that mattered!
i don't kow why it looks stiff........i can't say that i disagree with your observation.....I use a double pedal, so suffice it to say it's lke a dbl kick. Might be the rear camera angle !
Froggpond1 I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that I NEVER respond to these things. I rarely see a regular guy that plays anything that needs to be seen. YOU sir, are fantastic. I believe Simon would compliment your talent. After seeing you I think I am going to sell my drums! LOL just kidding but I will have to go back and practice a LOT more now man. You upped the bar at least 5 levels man. Thanks again!
Thanks Zemadcat, and don't sell your drums,,,,just play and enjoy the freedom of your craft!!!! I got off the road in 89 and after 13 years off Found I couldn't leave it. I bought what the kids call the come back kit! Support of family friends, and fellows like you make this a most satisfying hobby. I've even been able to do some session and jingle work, as well as conducting clinics. A nice change of pace from my day job. I am in my ZEN when playing, fun is the primary driver here.
You're instincts are dead on!!!!! Playing live allows for differences with no reference..these vids and backing tracks will betray you in a blink of an eye if you don't nail the source recording dead on! It really makes for a deeper level of memory work and playing comprehension.
3yrs when this when White City came out and it was so far beyond my abilities at the time. I just might have to revisit this tune. Thanks for the inspiration. I did see Byrne's version..good...but yours was better so says my 27yrs behind the kit.
I had wondered about the technique on this song and this has answered my questions. Incredible work and nice bonus material at the end! Thank you for posting!!
Dude - You completely did justice to that song. Such an excellent song for the drums. You ate it up. I like the slow motion at the end too - Keep rockin!
Nice job, sir. Few have done what we have done, and it is interesting to see the different interpretations of the same music, even moreso the similarities. Well done!
lol...he`s missing half what simon phillips is playing and he`s playing double the time on the hi-hat than what is actually being played and he`s missing lots of fills
i dont even have words to describe how kick ass this video is. One of the best drum covers ive seen in awhile. Seems like you are influenced by Simon a lot, from all the vids and your drum set- up. Btw sweet set, you mind if i steal it from you? lol keep making awesome vids
Froggman, Your drumming is impeccable. Your videos are done very well. They are very simple, yet the angles and the audio tell everything you need to know. I'm a photog and editor for an ABC station. Do you shot and edit your own work and what edit program do you use. If you care to you can check out some editing I did on my sons football team. Look up "discorox we run this" and that will get you to the video and others I did. Keep rockin' !! Disco
Thank you, for both the music and video comments. I play the songs then edit the video in the MSW stock program. I have been thinking about using other programs but don't want to become an editor. So Simple equals higher interest level, and less time editing, more time playing and living life. I spend a few minutes with the sound too, and record it all in one stroke to the camera. You lose edit ability but if you get it right... hey...it's you tube.
Just amazing, Petar! I recall having requested or suggested this tune from you a few years back (if memory serves!!). Tough song, and you just nailed it at the highest level. Very, very cool. Townshend should call you!

I've even been able to do some session and jingle work, as well as conducting clinics. A nice change of pace from my day job. I am in my ZEN when playing, fun is the primary driver here.

but like you look stiff while playing it
simon makes its so simple

thanks , i agree i look tight but really I'm not, this tune falls in for me.. it might be the intensity............

I don't agree with your stiff comment ?
This guy is one of the top drummers I have ever seen.

What can i say Great job!

Nice job on a tough song.
The beauty here is Pino Pallidino's bass playing? So fluid & melodic. real glue to Phillips' technical style.
Awesome.

simon phillips kicks ass!! great cover of a great song!
guitarmaster2413 2 years ago
That was great....haven't played in over 20 yrs but I know this isn't as easy as everybody thinks...perhaps more difficult than doing it live
jsmarket 2 years ago
You're instincts are dead on!!!!! Playing live allows for differences with no reference..these vids and backing tracks will betray you in a blink of an eye if you don't nail the source recording dead on! It really makes for a deeper level of memory work and playing comprehension.
froggpond1 2 years ago
Fantastic! loved it. I had been playing for
3yrs when this when White City came out and it was so far beyond my abilities at the time. I just might have to revisit this tune. Thanks for the inspiration. I did see Byrne's version..good...but yours was better so says my 27yrs behind the kit.

Nice job, sir. Few have done what we have done, and it is interesting to see the different interpretations of the same music, even moreso the similarities. Well done!

i dont even have words to describe how kick ass this video is. One of the best drum covers ive seen in awhile. Seems like you are influenced by Simon a lot, from all the vids and your drum set- up. Btw sweet set, you mind if i steal it from you? lol keep making awesome vids

Wake me when you get a few more cymbals -- you don't have enough brass on your set.

Disco
DiscoRox 2 years ago
Thank you, for both the music and video comments. I play the songs then edit the video in the MSW stock program. I have been thinking about using other programs but don't want to become an editor. So Simple equals higher interest level, and less time editing, more time playing and living life. I spend a few minutes with the sound too, and record it all in one stroke to the camera. You lose edit ability but if you get it right... hey...it's you tube.
Cheers
Petar....looking for session work

The obvious answer is: anytime you are in st louis!!! With playing like that it would be an honor to burn some and heads.
