FANTASTIC!!! Especially when compared to Ponti -the recording I couldn't even finish listening after Gilels. It seems that for Russian music musician should be of the Russian School
This concerto has many folk tune influences, perhaps more than his other works as a whole since in the first concerto the whole of the 2nd movement is influenced from folk tunes. Nevertheless this concerto is extraordinary for its untamed power and blended with majestic melodies and a very tranquil atmosphere.
Check out the new Stephen Hough recording of this piece...it is a bit quicker, but no less dramatic. I'd have to rank it just a touch above this one, even though Gilels rocks my world hard...
Where did I read that Tschaikowski never had to have his music reorchestrated. it is instantly recognisable....and the blend of piano here is amazing The L.H. long trill 2/20 above the melody reached the heights . with the skill of dear Emil Gilels... :)
I've long admired this recording - I think Gilels brought everything one could wish for to this concerto (also to numbers 1 and 2). The orchestral playing also sounds vivid.
