@sekke14 Tenor. Work your way up to bass trombone. Bassbones are generally more expensive and if you're just starting out, there's no reason to blow 1500 on an Amati student bassbone when it's better to build a foundation on a tenor.
He isn't a bad teacher. You don't get anything out of a lesson where you don't find out what you are doing wrong. If all you heard was what you are doing right, you'd make no headway.
@BinaryCoders Reality check: When you are paying a professional musician who is better than you to teach you how to play better, you should expect him to be "anal" about the tiniest detail. Go ahead, pay someone $50-100 a lesson and tell them "Be casual, don;t be strict, and for heaven's sake, don;t be anal about the details. After all, it's just music, dude!!" No wonder this world is full of slackers and hack musicians. If you can't play music with the big dogs, stay on the porch!
@bktrmbone90 May be this works for you but i prefer the F and E in first and second valve positions. I only use the second valve on the C and B in the staff.
Practicing musicians / learners, if you could fill out my easy 4 question survey for my research project it would be much appreciated. The link is in the info of my video called practicing musicians thanks.
@rmrgm521m Agreed but in the states no one brings a contra to an audition to play these Ring excerpts. You have to have the skill to play them on the smaller instrument if you are going to try to win an audition on this side of the pond
from what i've seen i like this teacher. i took t-bone lessons from someone who was a phd. in music and whose dad was also a trombone music instructor. this man seems to deliver what's known as ''constructive criticism'' i.e. someone who offers educated advice but who is polite but firm, which is absolutely necessary in any music instruction. one can't be too nice as an instructor. the goal is perfection which is theoretically impossible.
The first excerpt is also Wagner...the Spear motive from Das Rheingold...talk about an incredibly difficult passage that's only six measures long! I shift on the E also...not for the sound quality but because the E is held for nine beats...for me, it's easier to control the air after the shift.
I would love some Bass Trombone lessons, I've been doing everything I can to get better and better, but I've only had books and teaching for Tenor Trombone. This guy seems like he'd be a bit frustrating XD
All i was saying is that this guy might need a little practice; though if you want to die for your comment asshole, come by my channel i enjoy going phishing.
Pat is an AMAZING player, he is a friend of mine, his sound is just pure tone :) Btw, this guy is the bass trombonist for the Albany and Hartford Symphony is addition to being one of the first call subs for Cleveland, New York Philharmonic and the MET Orchestras, this guy deserves some appreciation folks! Oh, and Mr. Norrell is just.....amazing and godly :)
He does have a good attitude, but I just don't see the point in lessons like this. It's like the student already knows what he needs to do, so why doesn't he just do it? Instead of sitting there nodding his head like he already knows.
True, but I had a masterclass teacher, Travis Dierolf, he wasn't quite at specific as this teacher, but there were certain things that he would do the same.
I've learned that though it doesn't seem like there's been much improvement, in reality there is a lot getting done in repetition.
Sometimes it gets boring, but its all worth it in the end.
shifting in the low register helps to get your low notes to soud well and helps with better attacks. I find myself shifting and staying the same from low F all the way to pedal G. Then I have to shift on pedal Gb/F# and keep it the same for everything below that.
Another good way to improve your low and pedal range is to practice your false tones. Does really do help a lot.
ok.. as far as the sound and tone comments.. some people either have forgotten or are ignorant to the fact that... this is not a high dollar mic hooked up to pro-tools. this is a camcorder.. there is a high probability that his playing is overloading the built-in mic.
That was a wonderful video. I really enjoy how the teacher makes a lot of connections to how to play the music in a better manner. Great bass trombone sound!
@PatHerbone This video is, in its 3 minutes, one of the most "epiphonal" videos on youtube for the bass trombonist.
The techniques demonstrated by Mr. Herb (A phenomenal player in his own right) as well as the suggestions given by Mr. Norrell on the small problems with his already fantastic playing (specifically with regard to more frequent, but smaller breaths), are absolutely essential and have helped my playing a great deal.
I'm hoping to begin study with Mr. Herb in the near future.
good tips here - as far as the shiftzone goes, it will also depend upon your mouthpiece. I use a Monette Prana BT-1L and there is no shiftzone for me at all from a pedal C to the high B flat.
