  • @sekke14 Tenor. Work your way up to bass trombone. Bassbones are generally more expensive and if you're just starting out, there's no reason to blow 1500 on an Amati student bassbone when it's better to build a foundation on a tenor.

  • Hi, I have a question. Can you start with bass trombone, or ist it to hard?

Or is it better to start with tenor. Greets from belgium!

  • i might play contra bass for jazz band or regular bass

  • Btw for 6 people like dislike this...he plays in the Met now.

  • BASS TROMBONE FOREVER!

  • He isn't a bad teacher. You don't get anything out of a lesson where you don't find out what you are doing wrong. If all you heard was what you are doing right, you'd make no headway.

  • who knows the name & composer of the first song hes playing???

  • @stephenito13 The Das Rheingold opera by Wagner. The except he's playing is from scene 2 called "Spear Motive"

  • Did you know Brian Lynn's NEW PIECE 'Must Try Harder' for bass trombone is OUT NOW!!! see warwick music!!

  • Rhiengold!!!

  • When he played that first G, it was like a brick wall of sound hitting me! Bravo!

  • The teacher is terrific at teaching, but he's sort of an ass. : /

  • Chief! Good to see you!

  • @BinaryCoders what's wrong with him?

  • he was actually playing natural notes from G to pedal E. it seems very simple, however it is not. i also play bass trombone :-)

  • this is a real trombone lesson everyone.

  • @BinaryCoders Reality check: When you are paying a professional musician who is better than you to teach you how to play better, you should expect him to be "anal" about the tiniest detail. Go ahead, pay someone $50-100 a lesson and tell them "Be casual, don;t be strict, and for heaven's sake, don;t be anal about the details. After all, it's just music, dude!!" No wonder this world is full of slackers and hack musicians. If you can't play music with the big dogs, stay on the porch!

  • If i could play as "bad" as the student, i'll be super happy.

  • How come he never actually plays?

  • @tenniscrazy2 if you buy the lesson he does actually play.

  • I like this guys sound. I don't play btone but I love them all <3.

  • @bktrmbone90 May be this works for you but i prefer the F and E in first and second valve positions. I only use the second valve on the C and B in the staff.

  • @DavidGerber0394 It's a Bach 50G with Edwards valves and light weight Bach slide.

  • Practicing musicians / learners, if you could fill out my easy 4 question survey for my research project it would be much appreciated. The link is in the info of my video called practicing musicians thanks.

  • I don't care what anyone thinks, there's no substitute for a contra - just listen to the real guys in Europe playing the repertoire.

  • @rmrgm521m Agreed but in the states no one brings a contra to an audition to play these Ring excerpts. You have to have the skill to play them on the smaller instrument if you are going to try to win an audition on this side of the pond

  • Looks like a Conn 62H

I don't think it is though.

  • But im in the Chicago orchestra D:

Why would you say those horrible things about me I was just trying to help!!!!

  • I find that hard to believe.....?

  • He breathes too damn much!

  • You're right, my breaths get in the way of the phrase. Could you show me how you do it?

  • from what i've seen i like this teacher. i took t-bone lessons from someone who was a phd. in music and whose dad was also a trombone music instructor. this man seems to deliver what's known as ''constructive criticism'' i.e. someone who offers educated advice but who is polite but firm, which is absolutely necessary in any music instruction. one can't be too nice as an instructor. the goal is perfection which is theoretically impossible.

  • I believe it's part of Bagley's National Emblem March.

  • Nevermind, but I'd like to know as well.

  • The first excerpt is also Wagner...the Spear motive from Das Rheingold...talk about an incredibly difficult passage that's only six measures long! I shift on the E also...not for the sound quality but because the E is held for nine beats...for me, it's easier to control the air after the shift.

  • what do you mean by "shift?"

  • Its when you move from one embouchure to another. Some people don't have to do this at all while others have to do this all the time.

  • @twoerner11 Change your emboucher. Like how your mouth/jaw/airflow is and all that.

  • what dose band Stephen Norrell's play on (what Brand)

  • i know its a Yamaha...i can't remember which series

  • actually it is a Bach

  • He has three different Bach 50 bass bells he plays and a shires slide. He also uses a Yamaha 613 for lighter rep.

  • bach

  • bee bee bee bee bom bee....

  • I would love some Bass Trombone lessons, I've been doing everything I can to get better and better, but I've only had books and teaching for Tenor Trombone. This guy seems like he'd be a bit frustrating XD

  • He's drunk...

  • most definitely

  • trombone is the best insstrument ever

  • lol, whatever dude

  • Pat is an AMAZING player, he is a friend of mine, his sound is just pure tone :) Btw, this guy is the bass trombonist for the Albany and Hartford Symphony is addition to being one of the first call subs for Cleveland, New York Philharmonic and the MET Orchestras, this guy deserves some appreciation folks! Oh, and Mr. Norrell is just.....amazing and godly :)

  • You tell em Howard!

  • haha. i can see someone getting frustrated with the way he teaches.

i, on the other hand wouldnt mind. because my attitude is anything to get better.

and i would like some help with the bass trombone. :P

i have the basics down, but there's always room for improvement.

  • boricuajv, I would be so frustrated!!

He does have a good attitude, but I just don't see the point in lessons like this. It's like the student already knows what he needs to do, so why doesn't he just do it? Instead of sitting there nodding his head like he already knows.

  • True, but I had a masterclass teacher, Travis Dierolf, he wasn't quite at specific as this teacher, but there were certain things that he would do the same.

I've learned that though it doesn't seem like there's been much improvement, in reality there is a lot getting done in repetition.

Sometimes it gets boring, but its all worth it in the end.

  • agreed

  • I'm frustrated listening to this guy. His articulations are so obvious. He breathes so much I thought he was going to hyperventilate.

  • That's what was going on in my mind

  • I've probably heard him say this stuff to me 1000 times since I studied with him for 3 years. If it was easy I'd be sitting next to him in the Met!!

  • what brand dose the teacher's bass trombone have??

  • Comment removed

  • Really fantastic sound and evenness in the low register. I think I'll borrow that exercise!

  • I use a Stork Custom 1 mouthpiece

shifting in the low register helps to get your low notes to soud well and helps with better attacks. I find myself shifting and staying the same from low F all the way to pedal G. Then I have to shift on pedal Gb/F# and keep it the same for everything below that.

Another good way to improve your low and pedal range is to practice your false tones. Does really do help a lot.

  • ok.. as far as the sound and tone comments.. some people either have forgotten or are ignorant to the fact that... this is not a high dollar mic hooked up to pro-tools. this is a camcorder.. there is a high probability that his playing is overloading the built-in mic.

  • my screen name will guide me.

    I HAVE CRACKERS!

  • That was a wonderful video. I really enjoy how the teacher makes a lot of connections to how to play the music in a better manner. Great bass trombone sound!

  • towards the end,... that guy was playin the orchestral excerpt of Tannhauser Overture by Richard Wagner

  • Tannhäuser, not Tannhauser...

  • what a beautiful bass bone sound!

anyone whos in high school and believes they have better chops than this guy needs to think again.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm in highschool, and I play the Basstrombone. I've heard some amazing players that could rule out your assumption.

  • I have been playing trombone for 2 years now i can do pedal A. Does anyone have hints for me to go lower like pedal F please ?

  • Drop your jaw alot. Just practice the low notes that you can and try to touch the ones that you can't do so well and work at them.

  • Yeah, bring it on tuff guy!!!

  • LOL if you played as much as you jack off MAYBE you could be this good. LMAO

  • ROFLMFAO LOL

  • that my friend, was epic.

    xD

  • Another brilliant comment by the mousehound sniff sniff.

  • I'd rather be a sucky trombonist than a sucky person that hides behind their screen name.

  • That's right Herb. Damn haters!

  • @PatHerbone This video is, in its 3 minutes, one of the most "epiphonal" videos on youtube for the bass trombonist.

The techniques demonstrated by Mr. Herb (A phenomenal player in his own right) as well as the suggestions given by Mr. Norrell on the small problems with his already fantastic playing (specifically with regard to more frequent, but smaller breaths), are absolutely essential and have helped my playing a great deal.

I'm hoping to begin study with Mr. Herb in the near future.

  • LOL he subs for the MET and New York Phil AND plays with the Cleveland Orchestra. You know nothing loser! LMAO

  • i couldnt play that to save my life

  • I shift at pedal f =/

  • good tips here - as far as the shiftzone goes, it will also depend upon your mouthpiece. I use a Monette Prana BT-1L and there is no shiftzone for me at all from a pedal C to the high B flat.

  • good point about the mouthpiece!

  • What is a shiftzone?

  • What, are you criticizing him?

  • Who is the student?

  • sonds like my teacher lol!
