Also, much like jian and dao, if you don't perform the routines correctly the fabric won't pop or flap the sae way. Of course, if you don't strike correctly with a jian it won't swing around and crush your face... The flags are meant to create a specific sound, if your chain goes slack at any time during a transition move the flags give it away by changing sound.

the cloth at the end, could be used for a couple of reasons. one is a distraction, in combat the bright colors spinning around would catch ur eyes and distract you. causing an advantage on the others behalf. another reason is so the judges can see how well they preform the technics

@deathballs12 The cloth or feather or other such impliment had a more morbid reason as well - the practicality of dealing with blood on your weapon - it's very sticky and slippery at the same time.

It's for visual appeal. It also gives the user a better sense of where the chain is at in relation to their body.
