To copy something is simple but to create that is the true show of talent And i may get made fun of for saying this but he didnt just play he put his heart, soul and emotions into that guitar
Also (This is me being bias) it doesn't matter if Hendrix did acid because he could still wipe the floor with any other guitar player he did things never done before or after including now. And some one that comes along and does what he did forty or so years ago doesn't mean they're the best they're just copying him he is the original that's why hes the best
Uh many of those people you named played piano not electric guitar and experimentation is a part of music like this solo it has some blues jazz mix to deny branching out in music is the denial of culture growth. Also if any one plays like Hendrix name them please and tell me why they are not on stage playing to over five hundred thousand people
I'm sorry, but this acid, atonalic shit has nothing to do with music. Inaccurate playing makes it even worse shit. Dislike, definitely. For great compositions: Mahler, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, Tsaikovski, Sibelius, Bach... And even before Hendrix there where incredible guitarists who would have wiped a floor with Jimi's afro. For example Joe Pass. Although Fire and Voodoo Child are good songs..
@Terssi92 Yes name dropper these people you mention are all very good they practiced there earthly theory and produce some nice clever patterny pleasing to the ear elevator music it's ok. Hendrix's theory was from the cosmos. Are you sure that they want you comparing them to God's other son. If anything it's not fair to them because they are very good but compared to Hendrix they are all just standing next to a MOUNTAIN!
@Terssi92 whahahahahha whahhahahahhhaha so why is he one of the number one guitarist then?? tell me why is he an example for so many and dikchead can you play hendrix? i bet you don''t
@Terssi92 You must be kidding, of course there were, but he was the most inspirational in most fan's of his opinion, no one cares what you have to say, I will always think he is the greatest electric guitarist to live. Everyone copies, he just did it the best, but there are many original pieces by him that will never be played the same. I find it funny how you find Fire, probably the song he considered the most overplayed and boring to be one of his best.
he wasn't a guitarist - he was a musical genius who happened to use a guitar. to compare to other axemen is pointless. like comparing beethoven to alfred brendel. more truth and beauty in one simple note of his than the whole output of Vai, satriani, halen, even stevie RV
I know it may be my age[63 ffs],or too much acid in my youth, but how anyone can compare Hendrix and Vai... It's like REAL people and CGI.If you don't think this to be one of,or,IMHO, THE greatest guitar instrumental you ever heard, then what can I say?
For me, easily the best performance on the Woodstock album - timeless. No showboating, no setting the guitar on fire, no playing with his teeth...just superb musicianship. Hendrix plays the blues.
I am an Old cowboy and I have worn this song OUT!!! My favorite tune of all time... In fact I was walking on the ranch t0day humming it in my head.. I know Every simple hidden note.. NOW, If I could just put it on a Guitar!!!
thanks for responding. It is an honor to speak to you Juma. I'm a huge Jimi Hendrix fan and only wish i could have been there at Woodstock. Probably the greatest musical event in modern history. Sadly, I was born in July of 69 so never had the chance. I thought the gig with all of you was great. Complimenting Jimi wonderfully. Aside from you and Billy is are there any of you still alive? And do you still talk to Billy?
i am very proud to have been on stage with my dear friend jimi.....i am very sad that he passed away so young but he helped create history. For me, Geraldo, Billy and Larry this was the biggest gig of our lives. Although the crowd had thinned out by Monday morning and it doesn;t look that huge on film...believe me standing on that stage it was immense.......and we were very nervous but Jimi pulled us all through as did mitch as they had both played big gigs with the experience PEACE Juma
To echo what the others have tried to post to convince the hard heads. Hey Joe was the last song, his encore song. At first it was going to be Valleys of Neptune( I would have loved to hear him try that live) but he couldn't remember the words to the song! Lots of banter and tune ups of Jimi between songs on the soundboard tape which runs continually with no pauses. He says all of this on the tape that isn't on the video or CD released by EH.
the "woodstock improvisation" he played before just this is incredible. I posted it but "the video is wordwide blocked", owned by warner bros ... 42 years later ... it should be public !!
Does ANYONE know why he named this song Villanova Junction ? I had once heard it was a reference made to Vietnam War time and a location over there. Been waiting 40 years for this answer. If you can tell me please email me: texasmusic@ymail.com
@sandalsnsocks4 If you mean infinite sweet passionate love with himself well then you would be correct. You know chirpin' his bird, So if listening to Hendrix is like having sex with a woman and listening to dime a dozen shredders is like jacking off, even though playin with your wee willy is fun once in a while it is by all accounts rather lacking compared to sex with another person.
@HendrixFreakazoid hehe nicee. but "dime a dozen" !! we all give jimi the highest praise and respect without doubt but you must respect the caliber and musicianship of a virtuoso like steve vai. two beasts, well recognized innovators of the instrument. cheers!
@sandalsnsocks4Jack Butler's gonna like you. I can see where dime a dozen makes me sound derogatory but I may not be that far off. The guitar has outsold all other instruments combined for decades. Many, many, many of these guitars have been used to play in that style. The human brain is programmed to recognize patterns and be stimulated by these patterns. So when you play patterny linear sequences and phrases and you play them super fast, the brain also really likes speed to - continued-
@sandalsnsocks4 It can be overwhelming and one might think somebody is a virtuoso who plays that way. Technically amazing yes, but the classic paradox of less is more really comes into play here and the reverse is also true more is less. It's almost as if the gods built into the guitar that the faster you play there will be a direct ratio in the reduction of soul you project and that's what it's all about folks and saying I love you. But to each his own.
@sandalsnsocks4 TRUTH. Come on, You put 10 of these varney shrapnel guys together and throw vai in there. You can't tell em apart. They blow there load in first two minutes. Impressive but unfulfilling for me. But some people like musical masturbation.
When people say to me that they don't like Hendrix,['cos they;ve only ever heard the first singles] I play them this. Have had so many converts, I'm beginning to feel positively messianic...lol
I am an Old cowboy and I have worn this song OUT!!! My favorite tune of all time... In fact I was walking on the ranch t0day humming it in my head.. I know Every simple hidden note.. NOW, If I could just put it on a Guitar!!!

Last song played at Woodstock was "Hey Joe." Jimi did an encore and that was the last song. Last words spoken through loudspeaker, by Chip Monck: "It's been a delight seeing you. May we wish you anything that the person next to you wishes for you. Good wishes, good day and a good life... Thank You."
Even after 3 days of no sleep and in front of a shrunkin crowd of less than 20,000 people on a Monday morning Jimi still approaches the sublime with this seemingly off the cuff beauty of a gem.
@HendrixFreakazoid the last song of the most beautiful event of world music. Indeed, this is one of the greatest guitar songs ever. For me this is Hendrix's best.
i play the guitar too and if i meet someone that is better in playin than me i'm always like ''wow is he good'' but if i imagine that this person is a beginner compared to hendrix it just shows me how awesome hendrix was. I wonder how a person can handle an instrument that awesome. Wonderful song R.I.P James Marshall Hendrix.
This music directs people to the good in all of us but aside from this song ,wich is still available on you tube corporate lawyers are trying to steal the rights of a new generation by claiming copyright infringement.I've bought his records and so have you make it free to the youth so they know that people who perform for Gadhaffy are not artists they just have big boobs
@fireblossom2u its funny you mention segovia,i too noticed a spanish clasical sound.the interview jimi had after woodstock he speaks of segovia and calls him a king.it appears now that jimi was studing segovia/classical.what a loss...................peace.
@fireblossom2u, right opinion, totally agree with you: this performance will probably be something unapproached for a long time, from the feeling dimension expressed throughout an electric guitar...there is another performance giving me the same effect: Red House at Isle of Wight concert If you find time, try listen to it: Master blues piece !!
@BurninAss right,"tender surrender" of steve vai is strongly inspired from Villanova Junction of JH. And I must admit his version is impressive, as much from the feeling point of view as from his technical playing. As far as it makes sense to make a comparison, I would simply say that Jimi's version is deeper because especially of its sobriety. Cheers.
@BurninAss, getting back to FB after long time off. Sure "Tender surrender" of SV is great too. I do agree. But here is something quite special in this version (sound, playing, feeling..) which generates a too strong emotion that I cannot control.
By the way, I checked your channel and found this cover of "something about us (daf punk)" really good. Who are those guys, are they a reputed group ? Cheers.
yeah that band surely did a great job on that cover! But I have never heard of them before. I only found out about them because I was trying to figure out the guitar part of the daft punk version.
youtube...it puts old and new music next to each other :)
GOD was missing an angel,so he called him to come home and be where he (JIMI) took us...Heaven...my brother saw him in 1968 and I hear about it and just EXACTLY how GREAT he actually was...Thankx for posting...Ray
Khe4269. It was the last tune of the set and a beautiful note to end this momentous festival on. But the last tune was, unfortunately, the encore Hey Joe - Jimi should have stuck to his usual policy of not playing encores.
I really like that version of Hey Joe so I'm glad he played it. Are you really sorry he played it? I'm just sorry all of his performances weren't taped. Think of all the glorious Jimi music that was played but, we will never hear it because no one brought a tape recorder :(
That was the last tune played to end the 3 day Woodstock Pop Festival ... and what a Grand FINALE it was !!! Jimi is the greatest guitarist of all times !! ;-)
If you allow yourself to, you can really fit inside every nuance of this wonder. For me it's like being engulfed by some profound ancient wisdom like a glimpse into what this whole experiment is all about.

Try a copy of Rodrigo: Fantasía para un gentilhombre; Ponce: Concierto del sur by Segovia on Decca, Great music, I'm glad Jimi knew of Segovia.

In my opinion as humble as it is...this is one of the best performances every played on electric guitar. Always reminded me of Segovia on steroids.

@jinav62 and steve vai playing "tender surrender" live sounds very similar to villanova junction. Also a great performance...not blues but who cares

Cheers.

@jinav62 music...the best invention of mankind :)
yeah that band surely did a great job on that cover! But I have never heard of them before. I only found out about them because I was trying to figure out the guitar part of the daft punk version.
youtube...it puts old and new music next to each other :)

Khe4269. It was the last tune of the set and a beautiful note to end this momentous festival on. But the last tune was, unfortunately, the encore Hey Joe - Jimi should have stuck to his usual policy of not playing encores.

@chimimac1

Jimi is the greatest guitarist of all times !! ;-)
