HAD ALL TOMITAS LPS ,THEN SOME FUCK BURGLED ME,,, HOPE HE OR HER IS DIPPED IN FAT AND DEEP FRIED ,IN SHEEP SHIT EXTRA LONG AND NO DIPS,THE FUCKERS,,,,ONE CAN HOPE ,,,,,EH,,,,,,,
I too have this LP and when i bought it in 1976 i was one one of the lucky ones because here in Britain it was withdrawn from sale a few weeks later due to the fact that Gustav Holst's daughter Imogen still held copyright on his music and RCA had not sought her permission before issuing the record. It was only re-issued after her death.
when this LP came out in the UK it was quickly withdrawn. because a relitive of holst objected to it.how shortsighted was she.eventually she died and we poms where finally alowed to listen to this masterpiece and this track is my fav i also have all his albums and duplicated on cd where available.. thank you tomita for shareing tour talents with us mear mortals you are a genius..pete
@petethepomie Imogen Holst, daughter of Gustav, objected strongly to this rendition. When she died, it was able to be released. I must confess that I'm not a huge fan of this as much as I am of Firebird or the Debussy catalogue, but there are some truly glorious moments throughtout.
@Bass5el You tube videos don’t do justice to these Tomita works. They should be listened to on stereo hi fi sets. The reason I like Tomita’s version of the classics is there are a lot of personal interpretations to the music. The effects of using electronic equipment instead of orchestras are you get a deeper richer sound with more feelings and emotions to the music. The end result is a familiar yet very spacey unearthly sounds.
I would love a windup musicbox shaped like a tank that plays the intro when you open the top hatch. It has an incredibly ominous quality to it. Very very cool...
@Arthur60 He never used real humans even on his choirs sounds. How he got such sounds from a modular I will never know. That's why is considered to be the god of synthesis.
@Booger6995 Hey - the choir sounds were produced using a Mellotron. It is a keyboard instrument that triggers tapes, prerecorded with things like ... choir, strings, flute etc. A clunky electromechanical musical instrument which did amazing things before the widespread use of samplers. Hope this helps. Also, Tomita is a true genius / pioneer and master of electronic music. All hail Tomita.
@Booger6995 Not all of his choir sounds came from the Mellotron. He actually got some of them from hid modular therefore my comment. Doesn't matter though. The guys a genius.
There's NO vocoder in the entire album. It's analog synthesis. I have the same system and I used to do the same sound on it. Absolutely great, I admire Tomita!
You are right, but in fact these words are original of the book of H.G.Wells, and they always come to my mind when I listen to this work of Tomita, because I always imagine a Martian invasion while listen this music :-)
I've always pictured the original rendition (classical) would be a good video chronicle of 20th century warfare (ending with Hiroshima). Tomita's version would pick up the thread and take it to future warfare.
"No one would have believed, in the last years of then nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space." Oh, yeah!!
First time I played this on earphones in the 80's half way up a mountain. 2 Phantom Jets went passed me at the precise time of the rocket launch.....Absolutely perfect bliss!
great video thanks

Excellent.
I read on his website the "voices" were completely synthesized and none mouth was involved in their recording.
Really a great synth magician!

I wish that I had all his albums as 33 rpm LPs and a record player to play them rather than make do with CD versions and other digital forms
