Wrong, the Black Sea is International waters, that means that those countries have NO say over what happens outside of their territorial waters. You need to name the actual laws and/or treaties you are talking about. I don't think they exist. The only treaty I know of for that area just prohibits aircraft carriers from passing the Bosphorus ...which is why the USSR's carriers were all called "cruisers", to get around that law.

You forget that we would have great reason to claim as much damage as possible, to make the Soviets look as bad as possible. The accounts of the Captain's 'boat' (gig) being damaged are lies, it is located amidships on the port side, far away from any other claimed damage and the video does not support that claim either.

As for the cap's gig, most likely some other boat was confused with it. While I could imagine Soviet captain to be well-educated on the location of Harpoons, I doubt they ever bothered to know every little nook and cranny.
So why would the U.S. take a middle grouond and only claim some damage? None of which is seen it the videos?
Also, there are only two small boats on a ship like this, the other is on the starboard side amidships, neither was damaged, both about 30 feet long...hard to miss on a ship this size. They could have damaged the Harpoons, but again, there is no actual evidence of this.

Further, there are Soviet captain's accounts on the Harpoon damage, and I tend to believe him more than "my wife's cousin who spoke to a guy who served on the Yorktown". Of course, you think it's Russians that are liars; OTOH, I'm sure that Americans could hardly ever say anything without bending the truth. Might as well leave it at that

You forget that we would have great reason to claim as much damage as possible, to make the Soviets look as bad as possible. The accounts of the Captain's 'boat' (gig) being damaged are lies, it is located amidships on the port side, far away from any other claimed damage and the video does not support that claim either.

@RetSquid I wouldn't put it that clear cut. US could either push for minimal damage (to make Soviet action look "vain"), or for maximal one (to make them look "evil"). Which course would've been taken, greatly depended on the current political situation and other factors.
As for the cap's gig, most likely some other boat was confused with it. While I could imagine Soviet captain to be well-educated on the location of Harpoons, I doubt they ever bothered to know every little nook and cranny.

So why would the U.S. take a middle grouond and only claim some damage? None of which is seen it the videos?
Also, there are only two small boats on a ship like this, the other is on the starboard side amidships, neither was damaged, both about 30 feet long...hard to miss on a ship this size. They could have damaged the Harpoons, but again, there is no actual evidence of this.

Unselfish) was excluded from Russian Navy in 1997 and moved into Ukranian fleet, in 2005 was sunk by Ukraine due to being outdated, and well, cos its cheaper to sink than to dismantle.
