I driven this car 3 times and driven the latest pruis about 3 times and I could tell you. The pruis is not even in the same league as the volt, its like comparing a regular basketball player to a basketball superstar. Even when the volt runs in "hybrid mode", the engine is quieter, the constant switch between gas and electric nearly seamless and it coasts way better (that is how you get serious mpg gains, not regen).
@LiteNRG1 "Even when the volt runs in "hybrid mode", the engine is quieter, the constant switch between gas and electric nearly seamless and it coasts way better (that is how you get serious mpg gains, not regen)."
Hybrid mode? There is no hybrid mode. And you don't switch back and forth on the volt. It's either one or the other. That is one of the main differences between it and the prius.
@z28pawpaw Gets 40 mpg and size of most of the Jap cars for same or more money.. Stop sitting on wall street an dget a job and you can afford one also.
@Jaesango I've ridden in both, hands down the volt was so damn smooth and soft of a ride, and fit and finish was sooooo much nicer. The ride of the prius almost broke my ribs in LA traffic. I used to take shit about the volt, after my first ride I shut the fuck up about it.
It' not a full electric but a hybrid and the range (500km) is excellent for a electric traction car (piston engine drive only a generator), but yes the look is not so futuristic as the EV1...(i Hope GM re-built the EV1 as a hybrid like the Volt system)
n the next 5 years the electirc market is going to take over. Why would you spend more feeding your car than you do feeding your family? If a new car payment with $0 down was was less than your monthly gas bill wouldnt you buy an electic car too? Or would you just keep feeding the already rich oil companys witch are basically over pricing oil to profit or make us mondern slaves to our gas pumps? If you live off grid (solar or wind power) shes free to charge only oil change 1yr
Chevy Volt is a Winner of Electric car because it has a Gasoline Generator so if you take it on a long road trip, you can fuel your car since Hotel and parks doesn't have a charger for you to charge up your eletric car.
It consumes 36kwh to drive 100 miles, the battery pack is only 16kw. So for your math to be correct you would be driving 3600 miles a month at a cost of 130 which means about a dollar for every 28 miles. Gas is 3.50, so if you spent the same amount in gas vs electricity you would be getting 98 miles for every gallon you bought. Oh and crazy gas prices vs rock solid electricity costs? I'll take the Volt thanks.
This Volt is a total scam, they claim 230 mpg a year ago. Also what about the energy to recharge this car, it won't be cheap to recharge 35kw each day.
Government motors will screw everyone, what makes you think they won't. Have you looked at your taxes yet?
Lexus is coming out with the CT200h that gets 42 mpg combined. Starts at $29,000 and with lots of extras $35,000. Small car but pretty slick looking. Also I have heard Volt owners saying the actual electric mileage in the cold northeast now is 23-28 miles which is not very much for most people. I like the idea of the 75-100 mile range all electric vehicles for local commutes. What is the point if 25 miles on electric is all you get with the Volt?
The Lexus HS 250h costs that much! If I were in the market for a smaller hybrid and was gonna drop 40 large, I'd get that instead, cause it is alot nicer with all the luxury features. Don't know if the Lexus can be plugged in or not. I'd still buy a TDI instead...
@alexander1485 The metro was a good car for its time but they had frame rot problems and since the newest model is 10 years old it is not a good choice. I had one that the inside of the frame rotted. Both front wheels went separate ways the tow truck driver had problems getting it on the flat bed.
I don't know if I can justify paying that premium for a Chevy. I love the technology, and its a stylish vehicle. But I can buy a Volkswagen Diesel if I want good gas mileage.
@MhmMhmGood11 Fisker Karma is actually a hybrid as well. It even uses the gas engine to help power the wheels under heavy acceleration. Something that the Volt doesn't even do until speeds over 70mph. I agree, the Karma is very sexy. But it's heavier and gets worse MPG than the Volt. Oh, and costs over $100k.
@ShizoluckyShizostar It's more expensive than comparable gas cars, and there are maintenance concerns, too. And there are gas cars more fuel efficient than the Volt when its running on gas.
There are people who believe that they need an electric for the same (if slightly more considerate) reasons there are people who "need" a massive gas guzzler (and yes, there are those who do). Basically, they're saying it's the best electric car they've tested, but it doesn't always stack up to gassers.
This is NOT a test, it is STRICTLY a commercial. R&T is so in the tank for Obama Motors with this propaganda it makes me all.

Ok, Here is what happened with I was test driving the car with the battery "depleted" (not fully) on a city street setting.:
I stop at a intersection, engine/generator shut of.
Lightly accelerated from the intersection, only hear the no engine noise .
Gunned the accelerator, car took off and the engine/generator came on.
Let of the accelerator and apply brake pedal, engine still run and regen kicking in.
Stop at the next intersection, engine/generator turned off

@northwood117
So yeah, it does function like a hybrid once the battery is "depleted".

Unless your off the grid and have a free energy source,it is not worth it.
For $40,000 you will probably only cut your travel expenses by about $100 a month.
Use your $40,000 and get solar panels ,stock up on food and water and
buy some silver and gold.

Do you want to spend more money for electricity?
If you need to recharge every day for 8-10hrs, just how much do you think you will spend.
36kw even at 12c per kw in a month will cost you, also with only 25-40 miles to a charge.
(36kw * 30)*.12=$129.6
This will be much higher then people think, just buy one and find out!
