If a guard was hit, he can protect himself, as these are trained soldiers, probably just back from a war zone, I wouldn't advise it. Best to put yourself in their position, and keep a respectful distance and not be verbally or physically rude. Anyone acting stupid is usually frowned upon.

pacmnn25 said it right, the guards are well within both the law and their rights to restrain anyone they feel is threatening them. it's an armed forces privilege entitled SCA, which stands for sealed citizens arrest. the sealed means that it's protected by the seal of their reigning monarch, ie the queeeeeen.

Actually the lifeguards are a bit more relaxed about maintaining a fixed pose. Still, you wouldn't be able to dress up as a soldier outside Horseguards without being arrested anyway.

Firstly, Buckingham Palace is not the Queen's house, that would be Windsor Castle. Buckingham Palace is (for want of a better phrase) her city crib!
Secondly, those guards are not in front of Buckingham Palace; they're actually at Horse's Guard, about half a mile down the other end of the Mall.
Thirdly, they're not her guards, you're thinking of the Grenadiers. These are Blues and Royals.
