Well he is no hype. The guy can sing. I suspect at this point Journey wouldn't even let Steve Perry back in the band even if he wanted to. This guy is young and has the energy it takes to give a good show.

SP emulated hi predecsors, too...he copied and covered others songs, too...all singers had in one time or another sang other people's song..Journey songs were not not solely SP's, he just co-wrote it..just like Arnel is starting to do w/ his 2nd cd w/ Journey to be out this 3rd wk May..veering away fr sp-ish sound, this album rocks fresher, edgier and bolder..journey's newsong wouldn't have sounded beautiful if Arnel hadn't sang it..w/o Arnel we wouldn't know who SP was..Sp's the coatail rider!

His rendition of this song that was uploaded by NDGomez and performed at Hard Rock in Makati was IMO, the better cover. In this performance Arnel seems like he's just enjoying himself more and not taking it as seriously to sound much closer to Axel's original. I also have a feeling he has to "recalibrate" his chords again since he hasn't been singing this song for quite a while eversince he joined Journey.
My statement was meant as an analogy rather than literally. But, in case you're curious,for Arnel to sound as close as possible to the originals like what he did during his stint with the Zoo he has to contract his vocal muscles in a certain way at the precise moment with varying tones and if he hasn't been doing it for a while he may lose this ability since this skill doesn't come naturally but rather acquired thru constant honing and practice.
pinoys are amazing but it's too bad that they seem excel only when they mimic, the originals-(like asin) remain under the realm of the indie category. readers digest has an article bout this thing with pinoy singers.i love them though- go gogo!
Genius knows no boundary, it transcends race, age and time. We are fortunate to have Arnel Pineda who don't give up until he succeed. He is a living proof that there's no impossible in this world for a talented and good person like him.

I find it hard to believe this guy lived as a homeless kid in the Philippines for a few years in his childhood.
So far, I've heard him rival, and top, Sammy Hagar, Steve Perry, and now Axl Rose, at songs they created and perfected.
This man is a legend, and Journey's lucky to have him fronting them.

His rendition of this song that was uploaded by NDGomez and performed at Hard Rock in Makati was IMO, the better cover. In this performance Arnel seems like he's just enjoying himself more and not taking it as seriously to sound much closer to Axel's original. I also have a feeling he has to "recalibrate" his chords again since he hasn't been singing this song for quite a while eversince he joined Journey.

My statement was meant as an analogy rather than literally. But, in case you're curious,for Arnel to sound as close as possible to the originals like what he did during his stint with the Zoo he has to contract his vocal muscles in a certain way at the precise moment with varying tones and if he hasn't been doing it for a while he may lose this ability since this skill doesn't come naturally but rather acquired thru constant honing and practice.

Damn...I love this guy. Can't get enough of him. I still have a Journey concert saved on my DVR from a year ago. Saw him in Tucson. He ROCKS! I hope for great things for him. A true gift to all music fans no matter what he does or what he sings (or who he sings with for that matter)
