I like Bonnie's cause it sounds so fragile, like he's about to break apart. And of course, the original emotions are there. But this one, is melancholy itself. It's stronger, rougher. So both of them have their own magic, don't disregard any.
As with many songs the original author puts his heart into his words but someone else puts soul into the song and thus it becomes better than the author could have done alone. Case in point the song Hurt hit your emotions much harder with Johnny Cash's voice. Even the guy who wrote the song said "it's his song now". There is no disrespect is saying this song is better sung by someone other than the original artist.
Lanegan is just so much better...as heavenfunkfish69 said..respect to Bonnie Billy for writing such a great song....but it needs a great singer, and that's Mark
@heavenfunkfish69 I like the original better personally. Will Oldham has written dozens of amazing songs. BTW, in 2002 this song had been out eight years already so get your dates right.
@averrous1234 Written yes, sung, nope unless you are into gutless whimpering. As for dates, blame it on the whiskey. Three brain cells left and counting down :D
Chills, when Mark sings his solo stuff his voice is almost haunting. Talk about the man in black. Lanegan is the angel that flew out of hell to sing his way home.
Half of me wants the world to give Lanegan the recognition he deserves and buy his records by the truckload. The other half of me wants to keep him for just for me ( and the rest of you who have the good taste to have watched this)
While listening to this song a movie shows up in front of my eyes showing me everything bad that was done to me, but I don't feel sad....strange, but beautiful

Meh. I prefer William singing this song by light years. Covers are nice, but this song needs William's voice, complete with cracks that rend hearts in two.
Sounds like Johnny Cash, and it's a compliment.. I think the best song on this album was 'Some Misunderstanding' even though it was a cover.

@heavenfunkfish69 You'd bid her farewell into the next world two days before she actually died? That's cold.

@mcbrizzle46 Are you for real? Bonnie Prince Billy used to be an interesting drunk for about ten days sometime in '02.
His version of Burn is gutless whimpering. Lanegan makes it heavier than God.
heavenfunkfish69 1 year ago 9
@heavenfunkfish69 Oldham could never sing this well but you have to give props to the guy that wrote the song, sure Lanegan has much respect for him.
ianhorsfield1988 1 year ago
@heavenfunkfish69 Bonnie Billy wrote the song, RESPECT. Lanegan is a better singer. This is a better performance of the original.

The authoritative voice of Mark Lanegan with the
exquisite voice of Red Ghost is such a breathtaking juxtaposition; feels as though I am
hearing in black and white.
Mark could tell me anything and I would believe it.
Thank you for sharing this delicacy
