You forgot to mention that Alameda Slim was voiced by the once-great-but-now-crazy Randy Quaid. God, I hope Disney execs still have nightmares about this piece of shit.
@MrWelshwookie I hate when people use the "kid's movie" bullshit as an excuse for disagreeing with a movie. Just because this movie's for kids doesn't mean it isn't a phoned in, ungodly boring piece of crap.
Actually, this wasn't the reason Disney decided to stop using hand-drawn animation. This was actually the result of the epic box office failure of Treasure Planet in 2002.
I actually have a theory about why Home on the Range sucks so hard. Since Disney had planned for it to be the last hand-drawn film, they intentionally made it lackluster to justify their decision. How else do you explain the terrible finished product, the almost nonexistent marketing, and the choice to release it in April?
One thing though, the animation wasn't that great either. They have a really poor use of 3D in it througout. Good animation doesn't mix 2D and 3D unless the 3D is disguised completely as 2D. For example, in the Lion King, where the wildebeest were pouring down the canyon into the gorge to flatten Simba, that was 3D. Did anyone know? Nope.
Although I have to give them that they did seem to try harder than other aspects of the film, music etc.
@Alltheroadrunning does that really mean that the animators in Home on the Range weren't trying? No. By the way another CGI element is the gears in Big Ben in the Great Mouse Detective. It also blended with the 2D animation.
Didn't do your research on this--or other--Disney movies, did you?
The average Disney animated film has a shitload of slapstick and childish humor, as well as a surprisingly large number of adult jokes. Since you used Aladdin as an example earlier, one would think you'd know that already.
Also, Disney announced plans to end hand-drawn animation BEFORE this movie was released, and laid off most of the department afterward. The movie was always intended to be the last.
@Mremaknu I'm well aware that Disney films have plenty of slapstick, as well as the occasional adult joke. My comments were just nitpicking for the sake of comedy. That's pretty much the point of this series. Don't read too much into it. Regarding Disney ending hand-drawn animation before HOTR's release, do you have proof of this? Not that I don't believe you. It's just that the info at IMDB doesn't support your claim. But IMDB has been wrong before, as have I.
@Mremaknu From what I've heard, Eisner was the only one who wanted to get rid of hand-drawn animation, and from what I've heard about the production of HOTR about how it was rushed and got little advertizing, it sounds to me like Eisner wanted the movie to fail just so he had an excuse to switch to CGI.
@Mremaknu I agree. At first i liked it, until I started to watch classic disney masterpieces (Snow white, Fantasia, Bambi, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, etc.). Then I realized that these movies are better than this one along Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Dinosaur, and Brother Bear. Besides people said that HOTR is for toddlers and babies and thus I started to hate it. I prefer the classic disney.
