I will say, that despite the awful plot, this was the only Next Generatio movie that had moments that felt like a "real movie." Like, scenes actually were presented in a cinematic way, not in a way that feels like, "Oh, the movie crew is just the transplanted crew that worked on the show."
Of all the inconsistencies and plot holes in this film I think the blood transfusion thing baffled me most of all. He was dying, he could have lived if he had the transfusion, he had the blood and yet he never used it. Then they act like he never got the blood at all and was still after it.
It's really a shame that so many movies now think more action is better. As the story progresses, the action scenes get more elaborate and confusing, to the point where it's an unneeded element. Harry Potter, with the quidditch scene in the Sorcerer's Stone being a fantastic addition to the film, omitted the quaffle holders and beaters by the 2nd, and completely lost any element other than the Seekers by the third movie, where they might as well just have removed the quidditch scene entirely.
Absolutely agree with your comments about the "Power Play" episode and about how beam shots in Khan had a strategy element whereas in this film they're just random. I don't think you're always right, and most of the time you're just joking, but I think that films do sometimes depend on action more than on good stories.
Shinzon had the support of the Romulan military to make the ship. That's how he did it. If you watch the first scene the senator says 'It is not the place of the military to dictate policy.' This is just before Shinzon does his hostile takeover.
Admittingly, it was never explained how he was able to do this in the film. But from what was told it seemed as if he was able to convince them that he was the man to make the Romulans more powerful.
Shinzon had the support of the Romulan military. That's how he did it. If you watch the first scene the senator says 'It is not the place of the military to dictate policy.' This is just before Shinzon does his hostile takeover.

Why can't someone tell these filmakers this before they make it?
Believe it or not, "Insurrection" was my favorite TNG movie, but that's obviously not saying much. The reason it was is because it felt most like a 2 hour episode. A bad episode, yes, but still more entertaining than a mindless action movie.
The thing about action is why Doctor Who has lasted for 30+ Years. Something like trying to outsmart a twisted man living in a dream, or trying to make a little girl believe in a raggedy Doctor visiting her one night outshines a big dumb gunfight.
I had a definite problem with Shinzon from the beginning. I had high hopes when the Enterprise got sent to Romulus to speak to the Reman leader. Hmm, who are the Remans? Wow, Data's description of them and of Shinzon sounds really fascinating. Oh, he's just Picard's clone? What, they can't have a great leader of their own? Why are they just miners? Wouldn't it make more sense if they built the ships too? It might have explained how they built a scary warship.
This film could have been like the TUC in that the Romulans and Federation could have worked together to stop Shinzon. I'm not talking two Romulan ships that do shit all, I mean actually finding common ground and working together. It would have been a fitting sendoff for the TNG crew.
@eepruls Exactly! They could have had the Romulans fighting alongside the TNG crew against a common foe. Maybe the Remans, instead of slave miners, could have been the aliens that the Romulans displaced when they came from Vulcan to settle on Romulus, coming back to take revenge long after the Romulans had thought they'd been wiped out. Yeah, that would have been way more interesting. :(
Why didn't Shinzon just ask Picard if he would do a blood transfusion? If Picard isn't a total asshole I don't see any reason why he wouldn't want to help him out.
We don't want Star Trek to be an action movie. Yes, we want story and character growth, but we also want the things that Gene Roddenberry made the show famous for: addressing issues relevant to us that we can't/don't address. Some Q want to kill themselves. Some customs are cruel and incomprehensable. White/Black aliens hate Black/White aliens. Substance addiction. Growing up with parents in different cultures. Sexuality. The best episodes in each series, even in Voyager, resonate with us.
Nemesis would be way better if Franks directed it. Brian Stuart, who has never seen a Startrek film is one of the reason why it failed. He is more of an editor than a director.
I got excited even watching that clip from "Power Play." It's a tense situation as the captors and their hostages walk down the hallway past the helpless crew members.
We should have seen Captain Riker's USS Titan in Nemesis. For ten bucks a ticket in 2002 we got shortchanged out of seeing more.Worf could have even been his Executive Officer. The Plot could have brought the Titan into battle and Riker and Worf could have gone onto the Enterprise to help Picard in Battle.Bad story ! Data's death was like a Cylon downloading before Death. Data's memories would have been fully downloaded into the Enterprise computer and constantly updated a lot so he ain't Dead
and why the hell did shinzon name his ship after a sword that was used by arabian warriors. this guy paid a lot of attention to the human-middle-east-history lessons he attended during his time in the mines.
Maybe it would have been cool if this movie had taken place before Shinzon released the Remans, that way it could have been like he went to Picard to ask him for help releasing the Remans before going batshit insane with clone issues.
Nemmesis has only one good Point. And that is that a Competent Writer could have made a ok movie with the concept. And that's only a good point if you compare it with STV.

Remus is used by the Romulans for mining and weapons manufacturing. Remians are used to make the weapons as well. "How do the Ree-maenzs have the resources they do?" They were used extensively during the Dominion War! Think of them as "Grunts" from Halo. Yea they send them in to die, but they don't deny them education.
@unytcommsys Yeah, actually thats exactly what they would do. Cannon fodder only needs to know how to fire the gun. Thats it. Thats the point of cannon fodder. You have a lot of them, and they are really cheap to replace. That means no major education, no major training. Furthermore that doesnt explain how the Remans had THE RESOURCES, as in the raw materials and technology. They're right on the door step of Romulous, you think they wont detect the Scimitar being constructed and tested?
The Risa Postcards with the Remans holding drinks, playing vollyball etc... was hilarious and the reviewer was probably right... if Shinzon had a girlfriend he could have gone joyriding around the galaxy in the Scimitar instead of picking a pointless fight with the Federation !!!

The Remans look like the old UK comic book character Doomlord.

"How do the Ree-maenzs have the resources they do?" They were used extensively during the Dominion War! Think of them as "Grunts" from Halo. Yea they send them in to die, but they don't deny them education.
unytcommsys 1 year ago
