I wish there was a hospital cashier. The major problem with our system is that all the payments are made by third parties (a few big insurance companies and the federal government).

If people paid cash for more health products and services, providers would have an incentive to provide price and results transparency, which in turn would lead to competition. With competition would come lower costs, lower prices, and better outcomes.

Our current system is the worst of both worlds.

Profits just mean that people are willing to pay more for a good than it costs to make (which is good: we shouldn't produce something if the cost exceeds what people are willing to pay for it).

In a competitive market economic profit tends toward zero. Health care in the US is not very competitive, but if you confiscated the profits of all the hospitals, insurance companies, etc and put the money back into the system, you would only pay for FOUR DAYS worth of American health care per year.

The most ridiculous things about the American health system most be that, even though it is all private, and so many people get nothing from it, then they still pay a LOT to have it threw there taxes. The reason is that the private health care system is one of the biggest users of the court system, and they don't pay for the court houses, judges and so on, YOU do. USA has more lawyers than the rest of the world combined. And the private health system is one of the biggest reasons for this.

And it is not that rare that people here go to another European country to get an operation, or another treatment. But I have never heard of anyone going to USA for it. If the US wants to change it's heathcare it should look at the system the Swiss have. A basic HC plan is in place for all it's citizens that is far more generous than anything the US has, but they can also buy their own to get shorter waiting lists, better doctors, more resting time after surgeries etc. It's not perfect, but it is better than a full blown universal plan (ie Canada) or leaving millions of children without insurance.

As for denouncing universal health care, anyone who wants to know that side of the arguement should read Mark Steyn's "America Alone". It's a wonderful book and he spends a few chapters talking about European, Canadian and Japanese health care plans. On one of the Japanese islands a OB/GYN in flown in twice a week from one of the other islands, so the 20,000+ women on this island only can see a OB/GYN 2 days out of 7. Thats only one example of what is in the book.

Well, do you know of any American waiting lines? Don't we have the most advanced medical technology? Aren't many people from nations like Canada and Britain coming here for fast treatment? It does work, but of course we still have flaws that need to be worked out. But the solution is not to radically change the system into a gov't-controlled one. You can have universal healthcare without loosing the competative, free-market nature of the current US health system. Simply replace (or embelish) private health insurance with state-provided health insurance. Not medicare, or medicaid; but a real investment in people's health and future. That way, you can go to any hospital you wish and receive treatment at a high standard without waiting lists.
