I bet Flea meant the statement to hit people lining in queue in Idol, Brit/America's Got Talent instead of honing their own music skills. And I bet he is directing that statement against Simon Cowell.
It's not just the music industry that's lacking originality. A lot of the major movies from the past decade are remakes of older movies or TV show adaptations. It's easy, guaranteed money, so the industry just goes along with it. As for music, as long as sex sells, mainstream will continue to suck.

What do you expect......bands are now pushed for their looks as much as music, and R&B, pop,, and the likes of Miley Cyrus Beyonce are considered great. Same thing has happened in country music as well. Just a bunch of no talent models. sad sad sad state of affairs for music.
@billsurf101 Music isn't in a sad state, it's just that MTV and the radio lead you to believe so. The good artists are there. However, Beyonce, however lame some of her songs/antics are, is actually a great singer.
chilli peppers were right on here...rock is totally stale and just copycat nowadays..all the bands have almost the same exact singer what it sounds like...when you have guys like shinedown, daughtery, and nickleback on top then you know somethings not right..take me back to the 90s when you got so many different and dynamic bands like blind melon, nin, rhcp, nirvana, tool, tribe called quest, smashing pumpkins, and alot more..but thats when rock was strong and fresh...now its a parody of itself
Well, rock isn't as publicized as it used to be. Like... Woodstock who? And how many rap and R&B and pop videos do you see on MTV before you see something remotely rock related? Whatever happened to Unplugged? Rock is dead because no one wants to make money off it anymore.
bro i get wat ur sayin about it not being as publicized today..but rock isn't "dead" man its simply jus wounded rite now.. Think about it, rock for the most part ruled all from 1955 til about 1999 (obviously the end dates not definate). Rocks jus strugglin rite now because ppl find money to be more important than music, a fact that rnr has been rebelling against even wen it was the top cash crop. It will make a comeback, idk wen but its gonna happen nd it may be different than rock we're used to
@animal90sFreak5 it probably is bootsy....he was a big influence on them, especially flea. Of course ask any modern rock band today and they won't even have a clue of who bootsy is. Modern rock is dead and played only by complete posers. (Nickelback)
@animal90sFreak5 yeah but you have to take in to consideration that these bands have been playing for a long time and they're simply keeping it alive.
Once these guys retire, there aren't that many bands left to keep rock from disappearing.
Like John said, i hope its just a phase and that today's kids are gonna be the new legends of Rock :)
Put down the fucking guitar hero guitar, stop bragging about experting through the fire and the flames. Pick up an actual instrument and learn to respect music and the process that goes into real rock compared to computerised anything else.
hahaha some of the hottest women ive seen with their eyes peeled open to the stage full of people not giving a fuck!
and all music has meaning its just in vogue to try and make something of it, cos theres money to be made in all young bands despite whether their good or not, and before record execs and syndicators get a hold of it it may of sounded alot better.

eh, doubt it in a sence. A lot of music has come about due to economic hardship, teenagers bumming around with nothing to do but start a band. As technology progressies theres less insentive to start a band and get good at something that is a long term investment (i.e. playing guitar) and kids are more likely to sit at the computer watching videos of shit, so hey, maybe some intresting music will come out of other regions that are becoming more of a 1st world country.
most bands that i listen to are for 2000 and down now it seems like that there arent many good bands... and hip hop and pop and w/e really have no talent included expect for singing everything else is just computer bullshit
this is why I'm getting a guitar for my 40th birthday, so I can teach my kids how to play...
STill remember losing a shoe at Auditorium shores in Austin in a mosh pit at a Chili Peppers concert outdoors, and a tour at which little known bands, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumkins opening. Those were the days... Ho humm...
I think your completly wrong, thousands if not millions of kids are getting into the hard rock songs found on the GH games. And they would prolly only be HipHopin otherwise.Aalso its actually kinda helpful as a traing tool as far as timing and finger work and such.
Also, the genre being stale is one of the main reasons I'm trying to become a rock star who plays the electric violin, the harmonica, and the ocarina. Those are three VERY underused instruments.
In my opinion, too many people play guitar. It's true that it's the most important instrument in the world, but it's not the ONLY instrument in the world. Literally THOUSANDS of instuments exist in this world, why do half of all teenage dreamers play guitar?
I know what your saying. I think bands are just too small sometimes and need to experiment with more musicians more often.I find it hard to believe money doesnt go around enough to employ other musians.
well i play and love guitar, why??? cuz its what you pick up after listening to an amazing guitar song where you can learn off the songs of those who are famous and put together what others have made into your own, many rock songs are built of the very same chords that started rock!!!! and go for it! play those instruments have fun! its how ever you speak through music not how others speak for u
all i seem to listen to now is all the bands that came out years ago like RHCP, jimi hendrix, metallica, nirvana etc there dosent seem to be many bands like these type of bands anymore, half its screaming and has to have a double bass pedal or its pop punk bands you know?
I also think its not just in rock music most hip-hop just sounds the same these days unlike in the 80's where they had good beats etc
I'm kinda the same with my Heavy Metal, I just stick to classic bands like Maiden, Sabbath Priest Metallica and Megadeth, Pantera and a bit of MElodic Death Metal, but there arent many bands that can capture that feeling nowadays, the only band that made me feel like the others is Evile (new Thrash Metal band) much of modern day metal is just Masturbate on double bass and growling like idiot... everyone wants to make brutal death metal, we need more classic sounding metal!!!
I don't think there's anything wrong with these bands, we don't need them to go away. We just need more talented people who are able to play more instruments, more time-signatures, and utilize more unique effects and chords to get famous too.
@KillerQueen247 The fuck? Nirvana reinvented nothing. Nirvana songs are typical chords progressions (good or bad), they are a great example of straigthfoward rock. If you want to listen to innovative rock bands, go listen Prog Rock. Like, The Mars Volta--who have opened some RHCP concerts, even.
Also, you may want to learn to write in sentences and paragraphs.

Yes that is true, but I think he means the (young) bands who only make music for the money, who care more about the money than about the music and who want to make a lot of money as fast as they can.. And it`s kind of like, you`re choosing a study for a job where you can earn a lot of money, but you don`t like it, it`s just for the money, you know ?
of course its gone stail, the only hope for rock music is if the chilis come up with another album, otherwise we'll be stuck with bullshit like nickleback and falloutboy, o god
i agree with blacksabbath919 that there will one day be an amazing rock band that is inspired by something other than their peers in modern rock, but they will probably not be very appreciated, or it will be just one band, not a big collection of great ones like throughout the 60's and 70's and the early 90's
I have visions of Fall Out Boy,The Killers,Panic At The Disco, etc. when they this. such bad music. I'm just glad I can retreat to the safe haven of a Hendrix album. Most young kids these days(i am only 23) probably only know jimi as a T-shirt brand. I walked into a "Future Shop/Best Buy", and asked for The Good The Bad and The Ugly, I got blank stares from three teenaged workers, I think that is a microcosim of the ignorance that is being put upon us in our western societies.

People just need to wise up and open their ears to real music, like what the RHCP create. Rather than what they are force-fed my the media etc.

Hey, if you're interested, I'm in an alternative-funk style band and will be posting some of our stuff in the near future.
The genre may be stale as hell, but I'm still willing to take a bite out of it. I'm not giving up on the music I love, and neither should you.
Pudge3k 3 years ago 3
what we dont need is another stadium arcadium,

i agree with blacksabbath919 that there will one day be an amazing rock band that is inspired by something other than their peers in modern rock, but they will probably not be very appreciated, or it will be just one band, not a big collection of great ones like throughout the 60's and 70's and the early 90's
