Didn't they have a name change at one time also - from/to The Young Sentinels? I mean, I was only 10 when it came on, but I seem to recall a name change at one point.
@CaesiusX You are correct. Filmation co-founder/executive producer Lou Scheimer himself said that the show was originally titled The Young Sentinels (according to the Space Sentinels/Freedom Force DVD commentary), but NBC made him change the title to Space Sentinels.
i would love to see a remake of jason from star command or even space giants, john blackstar and the mighty orbots. was it me or was johnny quest scary when we were 6 and 7 years old with the errie sound effects? the one johnny quest episode that scared me as a kid was the alien that looked like a ghost with one big eye.lets not forget space 1999.
WOW! I took it all for granted then, but this soundtrack is INSANE! Down-tempo LSD funk jazz, like something off Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters"! You won't be singing this one!
How the f@%k can they still be teenagers if they were taken from Earth centuries ago? OK I know these statements are not necessary contradictory - time dilution, the narration refers to their physical forms - but still a bit of a clanger.
Great show. basically a update or re write of SHAZAM!! even with the short capes. not a bad show from my you th. they need to bring this stuff back. saturdays are for shit now.
Loved this as a kid (and still do now aged 42!) No wonder we were ready for Acid House and Techno in the late 1980s after being bought up on these cartoons as children.
@Apophisguard i think at first it was packaged as the young sentinels. just like battle of the planets changed the name of it's characters in an episode i saw in 1993.
@jamiirali1 Yep, you're thinking of "Eagle Riders" for Battle of the Planets. As you said they changed the character names and voices, new soundtrack and (I don't know how or why), but seemed to have changed the plotlines yet used the same footage? Weird.
As for the Space Sentinels, I have a look around the web, but I remember this being aired the first time in the UK, (many years ago), it was my fave cartoon at the time and I've always known it as The Space Sentinels.
@Apophisguard yeah that was weird! i guess it is a common thing to do with cartoons when they cross overseas or vice versa.i remember space giants with goldar was originally named something else in japan where it originated. yeah eagle riders! i remember mark, jason, princess, keyop, tiny turned to rocco and i forget the rest of the altered names unless the names in the u.s version were the altered ones. none the less the young/space sentinels were cool.
@jamiirali1 Here it was called "Battle of the Planets". Our mid 70's introduction to Japanese animation and we loved it! So many of the cartoons following this copied the character set: Regular fit guy leader, second fit guy with hot temper, fat "strong" guy (sumo), princess, kid (or similar munchkin type character). Funny stuff.
@jamiirali1 Just had a look and it was originally aired as "The Young Sentinels" for the first half of it's run in the US on ABC channel. However, in the UK I believe it was always "The Space Sentinels", although there's no confirmation.
We need a word to describe the feeling you get when something from deep in your past triggers deeply buried memories..... Oh wait... it's called NOSTALGIA!!! Excellent - thanks for the post!!!
And that's because they were produced by Filmation Studios, which existed from 1963-1989 and was co-founded by Lou Scheimer, Hal Sutherland and the late Norm Prescott (1927-2005).
Oh my, this one was cool! I remember feeling a little bit scared...but in a good way, this series has something mythic...and I really love the fact that it's a white guy, a black woman and an asian guy!
It's surprising how hard this is to find under the search term "astria". It was the only thing I could remember. I was really into this as a kid. thanks for posting
its funny how animation from the 70s seemed ahead of its time in many aspects then went downhill for a period in the 80s and even early 90s for the most part.. its like they didnt want the more realistic look.. great stuff
You can buy the series on Ebay - but they are region 1 only i.e. USA / CA. Great if you live in the USA. I would imagine that sooner or later they will come out in the UK , as soon as it does I will be buying the same.
OH MY GOD! I remember this cartoon! I was glues to the Tv every Saturday morning! It was so long ago I wondered if I only imagined it BUT I didn't! I wish I could share this with my American History teacher from college who is a big old school cartoon buff!
The animation is lackluster by today's standard. I loved this show as a kid, but I have to be honest. By the way, is it Astraea, Astrea, or Astria? Astraea is the name I found in my book on mythology. I love it when she shape-shifts.
Since you brought up Freedom Force and Super Samurai, did you ever notice that Toshi hardly ever used his power to become Super Samurai. From my dim memory, he was the kid that always got into trouble.
And Sinbad, a Persian, was hardly ever in it. So the stars were Merlin (an Englishman), Isis (a Caucasian though with Egyptian ties) and Hercules (a Roman).
Freedom Force was not a spin off of Space Sentinels; it was a totally different series as it was part of Tarzan and the Super 7. The only link to these shows was the character of Hercules, who appeared in both shows, but were voiced by different actors (George DiCenzo in Space Sentinels, Bob Dennison in Freedom Force).
that takes me back to my mis spent youth, put them back on tv today and let this gerneration see them

THE SPACE SENTINELS was aired on NBC's FunMachine in Fall 1977,first under
the tittle of THE YOUNG SENTINELS before NBC insisted on the change, actor
George DiCenzo, who would later voice "BLACKSTAR" for Filmation in 1981-voiced
"Sentinel One" and Hercules, while producer Lou Scheimer provided the voice of
The "Maintinence Operator"-or MO,for short.and by the way,DiCenzo also voiced
"HORDAK" for "SHE-RA" in 1985-this actor was well known for his role,as Vincent
Bugliosi,in HELTER SKELTER .

Now *there's* a philosophical question... can they still be considered "teenaged" if they've had the bodies of teenagers for thousands of years?
(I also had one about Mercury and the effects of time dilation, since he can "match the speed of light", but never mind.)
