  • it's shame the bass has to be played in the highest register to heard over the orchestra. i'm definitely writing a concerto for an amplified bass.

  • as a bassist i've never seen the fingerboard extended like that :D

  • This is a very good performance !!! and also the man still young !!!!

I am a Bass player and seriously, and this one of the hardest concertos because of the work required to work around the G string and to retune the instrument in a tone higher it's just another Ball game!!!

  • Great Vibrato.

  • chocolatteeee thats what it sounds like:)

  • is that bass in fifth's??????

  • does anyone know where you can get the score for this? i plan on doing it for my senior concerto and need the score for my audition.....

  • @basschica1117 Do you need the actual score or do you just need the Concerto part?

  • wrong notes at the begining in horn.

Also bass player has any difficulty when there is happenning long jumpings. It is very important because when playing on contrabassthe most difficult thing is jumpings.

  • 37 people tried to play this peice and failed.

  • ohaiderrrr if you find playing the bass easy then your a prodigy or not playing hard enough music.

  • A little slow for my liking, but overall, very well done.

  • Vibrato is awesomeeee. So is the intonation. I just felt like it was played too cautiously? I'm not sure that's the right word. But whatever this guy's a beast!

  • Is the bassist missing part of his fingerboard?

  • no german bow?

  • @DJF00P French bow is the best.

  • @Naxeez HELL YEAH NIKKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Naxeez finnaly someone who agrees with me.

  • Ah okey by perfect pitch, i mean that I can sing any note (for example e'') without using a tuning fork. And so I can determine the pitch of a certain note. Wether it is played by piano, or any other instrument. do you know what I mean?

Ah okey. I am pritty much in love with that instrument. :D I love the sound and all the things you can do with it. I am going to try it out next week or so. It is, however, very hard to find a teacher here. :D

Do you thing it goes with piano?

  • ...As a Double bass player: Would you say it is difficult to learn? What does it cost and am I too old already (I am 18)? What is it like to play it? Is it a privilege in this case that I'm in possession of the perfect pitch?

Another reason that makes me desire to learn it is that in Austria there are so few of them ( Double bassists). I mean there are tons of cellists and a greater number of violinists. But when it comes down to contrabassists nobody can recommend at least one single player.

  • @thesynthmaster92

You are never to old to learn how to play an instument, double bass is one of the more easy instruments(in comparison to other stringed instruments)

your in possession of the perfect pitch? im presuming you mean your voice, if so then not really no, tbh it doesn't matter.

there are very few bassists in the world so another player would be great :)

P.S ik, im 14 but, im grade 6 double bass, so i think im qualified to tell you all this :)

  • @ohaiderrrr as a bassist yourself I am surprised you recognize the double bass as one of the easier instruments to play. That's a very common and ignorant misconception. Want to know why? Bassists have to deal with thicker strings aka harder to pull, and harder to press down, especially with higher notes. Furthermore, shifting on the double bass is more than twice that of any other string instrument. More chance for error and more time/energy required to shift from note to note.

  • @MrWhatever1199

when i said it was one of the easier instruments to play, i was caompairing it to the Violin and Viola, i play the Viola and i personaly find it much harder to play both orchestraly and as a solo instrument, but that is just my opinion.

  • @ohaiderrrr Because it typically has more difficult part than a bass. That's just how orchestra is. As a solo instrument, idk, but it is easier to play faster and smoother on a viola I believe.

  • @MrWhatever1199 Dude, AMEN!

  • @thesynthmaster92 I'm almost 18, I've been playing for 9 years, and it is never too old to learn. I know a lady that is 50 and just started taking private lessons.

Bass is not necessarily easy to learn, but once you build up the hand strength it becomes much easier. Find a private teacher and practice, practice, practice.

I'm younger than you and I'm learning this piece right now, nothing is impossible.

It also helps to hear how a great bassist plays, so check out Edgar Meyer. He is the best.

  • @bensmrt9 I would say there are a lot of other equally great bassists similar to Edgar Meyer, just many of them play orchestrally and have not made any solo CD's (although if they wanted to they would be a huge hit). For instance if you have ever heard any of the major world symphonies' bassists play a solo piece it sounds fantastic. My personal favorite is Maximilian Dimoff (principal bass of The Cleveland Orchestra).

  • @thesynthmaster92 I started at 20 and I'm a 30 year old professional. It is not easy, but perfect pich helps, and it is all about teachers and good practice every day.

  • Actually I am a hobby pianist and also (film score) composer. But somehow I've fallen in love with this instrument. I don't know why but it is the singing tone of that instrument. I mean every instrument has it's importancy in the orchestra music. Cellis are important as well and so are the violas and violins. But Iit is the sound of that instrument that makes me desire to learn it. I don't need to become a member of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra, of course, but I want to play it for passion

  • FRENCH BOW FOR THEE WINNN

  • @venskus2009 GERMAN BOW!!! haha

  • HEY!!!!

    There harp in the orchestra!!!

and the piece is so much better with it!!!!

  • I love this performance!

  • bad orchestra....:-((((((((and the solist should study more....

  • I love this...very nice ..hopefully whe I get a suitable bass I can do this aswell...we will se in the next month and a half ....I LOVE BASS

  • @leon5516 I think you should fous on learning the piece first, hahaha

  • @pigsrulealot what did i say?

  • @leon5516 I have no idea, XD

  • this sounds so much like saint saens. To be specific, a mix of his 3rd violin concerto and the 1st cello concerto. Its really a stunning work. I love the double bass

  • Prince William plays the bass!! Beautiful tone.

  • Cellos definetly sound sharp and twangy

  • anybody notice the cutoff on his fingerboard? its longer under the G and D strings and short under the A and E string

whats it called and whats the point?

  • @xcmbx1293 idk what its called but it probably allows for higher notes.

  • @kimchislayer for woodwind, it's altissimo. Maybe it's the same for strings too?

  • @xcmbx1293 its called a solo fingerboard, usualy only available by specific request although some bass come with it as standard such as a few upton basses, it adds a few extra notes to the bass that would only typicaly be harmonics. its only under the d and g string because these are the only strings really used a lot that high on the bass.

  • aww poor horn player splitting the note at the beginning! Great bass playing though!

  • wow. this is amazing.

  • damn this guy's amazing

  • how old is he ?

  • like the gary karr version better....

  • @MUNCHIIIIZ No, its probably a 3/4 - 7/8 bass. I'm guessing it's hand crafted and the problem with hand made basses is that they have no set shape or size

  • K, I play electric bass, I sing bass, and I love the double bass. I wish I could play the double bass, but sadly I never learned. Ah well, I'll just stick to electric and enjoy the music.

  • @THX1449 : I mean it's certainly not too late. I play electric as well and could never read music or anything, but my college graciously allowed me to take lessons this semester and they are now letting me play in the orchestra this coming fall, so if you feel so compelled then pick it up!

  • is that a full size?

  • "if chocolate could sing, it would sound like a double bass."

  • 这个版本好奇怪啊。。。

  • @KleinSieben

    怎么?因为更慢了吗?

  • @Chainedorlo 不是,,风格有点不同寻常。。。拉得挺好的,乐队也不错,只不过以前没见过这种柔情派的风格、、、、、、、

  • Great bow.

    Bravo

  • I love his interpretation!

  • bellissima musica bravissimo contrabbassista more beautiful music big doublebass play

  • I wish I can play bass.

  • ive only played double bass a handful of times. but im glad to see that there are people who truely appreciate bass. and who can show it true potential.

    beautiful

  • i juts cannot tell you how wonderful this song is.

  • piece* not song

  • hey, can some of you bass players out there leave some comments on my bass vid? thatd be great.

  • Just great ! THIS is pure music !

  • I want to buy one but nobody sells!

  • hmm maybe he should buy one with a cut-away! :P heheheh

  • Lovely instrument, wonderful performance, thanks!

  • Herkers...I would agree, but he has a few years to work that precision out...wonderful tone, and that bass is so beautiful

  • бурум.. интересно, приятный звук и хорошая фразировка.

  • dude because its different. and the bass sounds slightly different up there than the cello. and also the bass never gets anything lie this. its soposed to make your mouth hang agape. like that viola player at the beginning

  • I wonder why Koussevitzky wouldn't just write this piece for cello if he was going to make the bassist hang out in this highest register the entire time. Still a beautiful piece, but it irritates me that the bass' unique qualities (the low notes) are mostly ignored in favor of something a cello could have easily done.

  • hmmm... I wonder... maybe he did it because he was a bassist... i don't know... Anyway, it's a masterpiece and a challenging study for any bass player who is tired of playng adapted cello pieces.

    Brasil-sil-sil

  • That's horrid, great bass players should never sound like cellists! They should be much deeper (tone, not pitch) and less sharp and twangy.

  • Yes! Enough of the "laser-beam" tone!

  • @Lumify cellos are not sharp and twangy!!!

  • @musicalmiller If you haven't noticed this, cellos and violins tend to have a far brighter, sharper sound than basses and violas. Cellos simply cannot produce the same kind of mellow tone that basses can. Expecting that is like telling an oboe to sound exactly like a clarinet.

  • @Lumify I have noticed, and I totally agree, but cellos are NOT sharp NOR twangy. They just have a different tone, which I can assure you most people don't identify as "sharp" or "twangy".

  • @musicalmiller I can't believe I'm still arguing this after 8 MONTHS. After I heard this, I decided that I should try to learn it. 8 months later, I've learned it, and I'm still replying to these comments. I'm going to retire in 50 years and still be replying to these replies. WOW. Ok, if any rational person had to decide whether an average bass or an average cello sounded more twangy or sharp, they would choose the cello. It's not a huge difference, but the purity of the bass is unparalleled.

  • @Lumify It depends on the cello. Some cellos do sound sharp and twangy. Some, as in the ones that are cheaply made. You should listen to a high quality cello. The tonal quality of one is so gorgeous. It's very warm and very mellow. I should know- I have a cheap cello at my house, and a very high quality cello at school. They sound TOTALLY different.

  • Double bass players should sound much better than cellists.

  • Bassists sound better than everything.

  • Comment removed

  • @ConfinedAbrasion true beans

  • or basses sound better than cellos :)

  • @unkyconcon Not in my school orchestra. We only have one good bassist out of seven, and 6 good cellists out of 8.

  • @TheScientificArtists Amen, I would be that good bassist.

  • Actually, Perrylax, the bass is an octave lower than the actual bass clef. so that E is almost an octave lower than the cello's low C. Although i can see how you could make that mistake.

  • Also, basses can get an extension of their E string so that it can become a C, an entire octave lower than the cello's. A lot of music is written with these low notes, and most professional bassists have an extension.

  • ...cello's a baritone while the upright is in the contrabass or bass range, one octave below. Which explains the 4, nay 5 thumbs down you have. The only possible way for you to think otherwise is to base it off of how it's read, while ignoring the fact that one of them is transcribed to avoid ledger lines. I think it's the cello that's transcribed.

And the worst part about it is that the bass can be in C, it's not rare to see a low C extension, plus upright basses used to be

  • Double bass is 'transcribed' - it reads the same register as the cello but sounds one octave lower.

  • @unkyconcon Amazing how many people dont know that

  • i agree....

  • It makes me so sad that he smears like that because his sound and his interpretaton are so beautiful!

  • By the God which gives us Holy Music, I must say that this is amazing! Where else can we humans find such sorrowful beauty but in sacred music, which flows on and on like the rivers and stars of our wondrous cosmos? This is surely infinity - as is all music - and perfection in sound.

I will always have my affinity for the violoncello, but this video has opened my ears to the contrabass. The instrument is under- appreciated, and I shall make it my crusade to help this holy saint of music!

  • HAHAHA....holy shit man that is a hillarious post :P

  • I'm not really sure why my comment was a "holy shit" moment, and I'm confused as to why it is hilarious. It isn't meant to be funny, but is a heartfelt transmission of my love for music!

Also, I don't understand why people would mark down such a complimentary and happy comment. -2? YouTube is a strange place...

  • Does anyone know if he is using solo strings in this video?

  • His bass is tuned E-A-D-A from bottom to top. He has one solo string, the high A.

  • yeah, got me really confused, haha... especially the double-grip part, couldn't figure out where he put his fingers.

i am playing this piece now by the way, it's awesome :) best concert for double bass, by far

  • good!

  • oh my gosh! What an end! That was totally unexpected. It must kill the fingers though. Wow!!!

  • I'm so glad the bass is getting some love! Everyone who plays bass at my school seems to think they are not appreciated but I love bass!

  • I tinkered around with the bass in high school, but it was a no-go. I was too paranoid about pulling a pinkie muscle or something and not being able to hit those microtones on my viola. Just another regret... The bass is just SO beautiful to listen to...

  • you can do just as much with a bass -hmmph- LOL JK! haha, seriously though, you can.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh wow, you've been playing a whole 5 weeks?! I'm sure you know all there is to know about the difference between the contrabass and cello! I'm so glad we have such experts post advice on YouTube!

  • i like that run around 3:12

  • I should upload my video of this. But Francois might put me to shame :P Bravo Francois!!! and your bass sounds beautiful if you read this!!!

  • This is BOMB

  • where can you buy this song??

(im a senior in highschool and i played the bass for 8 years)

  • I wish the french horns could play on the downbeat without cracking. hard instrument but so is the bass.

  • definitely in 5ths. Look at the double stop passages, with his thumb on the A, second finger on F#, and the C# (a 5th) directly across from the F#

  • Yea I guess so then. Weird.

  • its C# and its a fifth, but its not directly across. I play it with my second finger and my first on the F#.

  • Yes, having played it in 4ths as well, I know it can be done that way, however the bassist himself has responded a year or so ago saying that it was in 5ths, as he is a student of Joel Quarrington, or was at the time.

  • sorry I didnt see that, good call.

  • i cant see the color of the wrapping on the string too well but they appear to be flat chromes.

  • This interpretation is almost perfect for my taste, love it!

Your bass has a wonderful tone, and it seems really responsive too, what type of strings? I also like that your tuned in 5ths, so many advantages to that! Im gonna keep a lookout for any more future videos, great job!

  • tuned in 5ths mean?

  • i'm not so sure about him being tuned in 5ths. looks like standard 4ths.

  • Oh, nice sound, everything nice! apart the tempo is a "little" sloow, and itlacks ur entire soul.

How can u play with that kind of round thumb in thumbposition??

ur lefthand may become a problem in the future.

  • Really Ok!!!!i like some parts of your interpretation...is a little bit to slow for me but is ok...The orchestra made a good job...

  • what kind of bass is that, it has a great tone to it

  • Find some friends and don't look through youtube trying to argue with someone's own beholding.

  • Sorry, I just believe how sad you are. I'm very sorry for you

  • a

    cccc

  • This is beautiful.. I like the sound of your bass.. and your playing.. and this video inspires me, to practice more.. thank you.

  • What's wrong with french bow?

  • that person has a point there...i mean, i play viola (i know you're thinking, wtf is ur prob), but the bow does produce the richness and color to it. 80% of the sound comes fromt he bow& its technique. and the person playing the bass is marvelous at it, nothing wrong with having a french bow, but the the bass player could use a different bow...:/ just suggesting.

  • very nice. I also love the rich color of the instrument itself I must say. I want it. :)

  • Wow, you are truly gifted. Your intonation is perfect and ur technique is incredibly sound.

  • Great lyricism!

Very good tuning in difficult passages

Beautiful balzato (or spiccato) in the final part. IMHO great performance.

  • hey that was cool. i just noticed that any instrument with the word contrabass in the name is enormous compared to the baritone versions

  • nice sound, but for a soloist, he is doing alot of fause notes. I know, that s very hard to play this but, not at his level

  • Wow! That was lovely. Doesn't look too far out of my ability range on the bass, might have a go. Thank you for uploading this!

  • wow nice doublebass! ;)

  • your an awesome bass player but try curling your fingers more, it imporves your playing greatly when in thumb position

  • I'm playing this... it's extremly hard!

i will play this with my orchestra.

  • {bow down} i am an aspiring bassist, i have been playing for 1/2 a year and before that i played cello for 3 1/2 years, and because of the level i switched to bass at i had to learn fast, so i already am starting on 5 1/2th position, but I cant afford lessons so I have to figure it out on my own or with some help from the section leader at my school. I want to be able to play this peice one day! It is so amazing! I hope I get good enough!

  • respect!

  • WOW THIS IS AMAZING!

Ive only been playing Bass for a little less then a year, and I started a year after people normally do where I live

I would love to be able to play this someday when Im alot better.. lol

My sister is really talented at bass for playing it for nearly six years, I learn from her :)

  • how many people are in the orchestra?

  • what a wonderful piece! and this performer has a promising future. are there any recommended recordings of this concerto?

  • I know perfectly well how to practice and therefore don't need any advise by some cold, emotionless jerk.

  • i'm not talking about the damn soloist, but the music itself. In the soloist's case yes, I completely agree with you he's the worst i've ever seen.

  • the soloist was amazing!! he was passionate and i found it funny that he had to play so high, b/c it sounded like a cello=] bravo!!

  • i like the piece, but this soloist was not very passionate i felt

  • i agree.

  • To this kid that posted that the is learning it on cello and is bringing it across as 'Im playing it on cello and it is SO easy' - keep in mind that whatever may seem simple on cello/violin or any other instrument is almost always going to be harder on bass because of how spread apart. A whole step for example, iss spread much farther than a whole step on your instrument.

  • I strongly advise you to listen to composers such as Edgard Varese, Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Luigi Nono. That will help open your musical horizons

  • just because it's romantic that doesn't mean it is out of tune. Koussevitzky is certainly much better than your big fat mouth wich tells all kinds of bullshit about music. But of course. I guess what you consider in tune will be some fucking pop-music. WAKE UP!!! It's not utopia!!! Music is expression!!! If you don't consider music expression then, I'm truly sorry, you don't have a damn of, what humans call, feelings.

  • your sister said that when you (drago..) fucked her it was more boring.

and that your cock was so out of tune that

it went down every 2 seconds....

    and she is right,

because your girlfriend told me the same

after i f++ed her last night!!!!!

  • hahahahaha

  • how immature is that....really thats totally uncalled for.

  • my dad is a bassist in the ASO and i heard him play this! now i'm learning how to play it on the cello...and i'm only 12!

  • what a bass, but no sound at all. Couldn't here Kussivitsky.Very bored performance. i would rather here 10 more times Gobdulin playing this piece but not this guy. Very "monotone".

  • Shut your face Mr. I can't spell Koussevitzky and i expect that this is better than you'll ever be able to play

  • Did you listen to Kussivitsky's own performance, or Gabdullin's, at least? No? Then, I'm sorry for you.

  • what a beastly thumb

  • The acoustics aren't the best, however the bassist's skill makes up for it.
