I got accepted. I'll be there in August. Wish me luck because I'm not sure what I'm getting into. I'm up for the challenge but excited at the same time.
Just watched this out of interest. Everything seemed alright until I saw that kid doing push ups and having his shirt pulled while someone spit water on him. It doesn't seem like the cadre there keep the senior cadets from acting like punks.
Also I joined the National Guard to help pay for tuition (in which I plan to transfer to the SC Army National Guard after I finish AIT) and to serve my country. Yet I had also believed that by doing so I could further show my interest and desire to be a part of the Citadel Corps of Cadets by demonstrating my determination and discipline. Which my question is will the Citadel look at me as a higher candidate because of my decision to serve my country? Thank you for your time.
I am currently enlisted in the NC Army National Guard as of 20110406 and I graduate from high school on 20110611 from which I will be attending basic training on 20110621 in which I will start my training to become a 68W. My question is that while I am attending AIT at Ft. Sam Houston when should I apply for early decision?
@fishguy967 I'm not sure of your age, but also consider the Coast Guard Academy. If your younger than 23 and have no dependents (children or spouse) then you could qualify. Just keep in mind that the standards for admission are high. Hope this helps.
@HASsecurity_ No. While enrolled, cadets participate in ROTC with the service branch of their choice, but there is no requirement to serve after graduating. In recent years, approximately 35% of each graduating class has earned a commission.

Hey does cadets graduating from this college go to into the armed forces to become officers or stay as civilian? On my thoughts people join to become military officers. I may be wrong but thats what I think.
But isn't having military contracts what you would have to do to join this program it is by the way a military program? But other then that, yea a person does have choices but mainly military don't you agree?

My friend attends The Citadel and he absolutely loves it. He said his freshman year was brutal but he wouldn't trade it for any other experience in the world. He is a changed man because of The Citadel and is now one of my biggest inspirations! I have the highest level of respect for anybody that chooses to go there.
aren't these kinds of colleges supposed to help us be better leaders and have a better education, not how hard they are and which schools are better than each other
This past week I visited the Citadel and was overwhelmingly impressed. The students were just leaving for Spring break but I was able to speak with a few of them and also with a Marine officer who serves on the faculty. If I were a young man again I would head straight to the Citadel. I wish I could be young again and go through the Program there.
First of all don't say "playing" army, or however you want to put it. A LARGE majority of the seniors at The Citadel (in the Marine program, especially) have already completed OCS prior to coming into their senior year. A large majority of the cadets in the Army program are on track to commissioning, and most rank in the top of new lieutenants coming into the Army. On the Marine ROTC side, most MIDN will do CONTRAMID after their first year, and A LOT do Marine Mountain Warfare School.
There is no need in getting ass hurt over a simple question. I wasnt shooting at being offensive to anyone. Just looking for knowledge. I really dont care what the qualifications or kudos go to the cadets here. Show me a combat patch then you can be the information hero
So what is the deal with this Citadel and VMI? I have been in the Army for 7 years and it looks to me like these are a bunch of guys "playing" military. If you are going to subject yourself to this kind of lifestyle, why not just go ahead and join the military? I dont get it. Im not bashing on the cadets that go to these schools by any stretch of the imagination but this seems kind of retarded. Are the cadre former military or are they wannabe's that couldnt hack it? just curious
most of the cadets go on to become officers in either the army navy air force or marines. the cadre(at least at vmi) are just upperclassmen who teach the freshmen both vmi and citadel are schools that are similar to any federal academy only they are state sponsored not federally sponsored... thats the only difference most cadets commission after graduation

VMI and The Citadel are military colleges. Military because they have a chain of command, wear uniforms, and ultimately know what law and order, honor and discipline means far better than students of civilian colleges. Colleges because they are places of learning, schools that offer some of the finest educational experiences on Earth. Many graduates do join the military. The cadre are elite students, some with military experience, but remember these are still young men, not old veterans.
Just reading your comments tells me you have no clue what you're talking about. First off, all officers begin at the rank of Second Lieutenant or equivalent rank depending on branch. It doesn't matter if you are commissioned through ROTC, a Senior Military College, or an Academy. It is commonly accepted that among the Senior Military Colleges, The Citadel is the most intense. Now take your uninformed ass outta here, thank you.
This video caught my eye and for those that replied, I appreciate the insight. Stevo made a good point, there is this misconception that graduates join the military at a higher rank of 2LT. I dont see that as a possibility UNLESS they are a doctor or medical professional, perhaps even a Chaplin. I have not met ONE SINGLE officer in the Army that graduated from the Citadel or VMI which is why I posted my question. Cant knock someone for bettering themselves
Can someone give me some information about what it is like at the Citadel. I would like to know what to expect coming in as a knob. I plan on going there this year but am undecided about here and some other colleges.
The main thing I can tell you is that it will be tough. Like VMI, The Citadel is harsh and demanding, but the rewards of going there are great. If you apply yourself at The Citadel, all the hard times you go through, especially in freshman year, will be completely worth it in the end. And should you finally prove yourself worthy of wearing the ring...being able to say "I wear the ring" is truly an honor.
I see that you want some information about The Citadel. As a member of the cadre that will be training you, I can assure you that, unless you've been through basic training, it will be the hardest thing you've ever done. You're going to hurt. You're going to cry. You're even going to want to quit. I did. I promise you that it's worth it to stay. My knob year ended less than a year ago, and I can clearly see the tremendous difference it made in my life. One piece of advice: Never give up.
I didn't ask for that information, sir, but I'm glad you gave it. It was well written and very helpful. Much of what you said there can be applied to VMI, and military schools in general.
Do The Citadel and VMI play against each other in sports events? I will begin my first year at VMI in a little over three years, and I'd like to find out what I'll hear or see of the Citadel while I'm a cadet at VMI.
We used to play in football but it was really a lop sided affair the past two years. The Citadel killed VMI. Im sure well play again but not soon. We picked up Florida instead of VMI this year and 70-19 later we kinda wanted to be in lexinton playing. lol. Thankfully we dont play you in basketball. VMI would kill the citadel.

As an alumnus I can tell you that you feel like you made a mistake during your first year. However each year gets better. I graduated 5 years ago, served my country as a "citizen-soldier" spending two tours in Iraq, and have a great job. Any time I went into a job interview, the interviewer ALWAYS made a positive remark about The Citadel. It was definitely a positive to have that on my resume. You also make life-long friends.
It's not for the faint of heart. You have to dig deep to succeed.
"In the 2009 rankings, The Citadel was named: No. 2 best master's degree granting public institution in the South;
No. 5 among all master's degree granting colleges and universities, both public and private, in the South; and
No. 7 best value among institutions in the South.
The Citadel was one of only two public colleges in the nation to earn a spot on the Best Value list for masters degree granting institutions." - US News and World Report.,
Dont say The Citadel is a copy of West Point. The Citadel did not get the whole football team thrown out for cheating. Anyone care to see the movie Code Breakers. 90 cadets including 37 letter football players kicked out for cheating.
If you ask me, sir, in the South we understand the concept of law and order, honor and discipline better than the Yankees do. Ever see what is shown happening at West Point in 'Code Breakers' happen at The Citadel or VMI? I didn't think so.
It is difficult to square the propaganda in this video with the realities of the other Citadel videos on youtube (e.g., knobs acting as Oompah Loompahs, knobs rapping, etc.). West Point and the Virginia Military Institute, aka the West Point of the South, have richer traditions and greater historic contributions.
I would say it is harder to get into WP, partly because it is free so there are a lot of applicants. But also it is harder because as a federal service academy each cadet needs to secure the nomination of his or her congressman, senator, or the vice-president in order to be eligible for acceptance. Even more, candidates take a physical fitness test and medical exam as part of their application.
In terms of finances, WP is free, plus you draw monthly pay. Additionally you get a very large, low interest loan during your junior year. At The Citadel that is not the case, and as I said earlier, you have to pay tuition unless you can get a scholarship.
The Citadel is basically a copy of West Point (that goes for VMI too). The difference is that at West Point you are automatically in the US Army and will graduate with a commission. The Citadel and VMI merely have a very large ROTC program, but no matter if you are in it or not you will be living in a military environment (and paying for it, unless you get an ROTC scholarship). Also, The Citadel and VMI can be more brutal than West Point because they aren't federal institutions.
Bah! Never say that The Citadel and VMI are copies of West Point! They are Southern military colleges, with a distinctly Southern history and identity. I would go to VMI and The Citadel a hundred times each before I'd even consider going to West Point.
I don't mind paying yearly tuition at VMI or The Citadel- it's not too high, and I have plans to cover VMI's tuition. Frankly, I *want* the system to be more brutal than West Point. It will mean that much more when I graduate at VMI in 7 years.
What state do you live in? If you are a citizen of South Carolina, I'd recommend The Citadel. If you're from Virginia, my state, I'd recommend VMI. If you're from one of those two states and plan on going to the military college located in the other, be prepared to pay at least 10K more in yearly tuition. Same if you're from neither of those states.
I don't really see the appeal of the federal service academies, though. You don't have to pay yearly tuition, but that seems to be it.
Hah! I doubt that. I believe VMI and The Citadel to be far superior to West Point.
I'm a Southerner- always have been, always will be. Why on Earth would I want to go to a military academy in New York when I've got VMI and the Citadel in my home region?
That is a difficult question to answer, sir. If you ask a Southerner like me, VMI and The Citadel are better. But asking if VMI or The Citadel is better than West Point is a bit like asking- 'which is better, the US Army or the British Army?' Who knows?
You have to pay yearly tuition at VMI and The Citadel, but you don't have to enlist following graduation (at West Point you do).
VMI and The Citadel are more selective about how many they let in from out of state each year, too.
I graduated from The Citadel. If you want to go into the military, try the academies, however they are tough as hell to get into. BUT, The Citadel has much more tougher PT (physical training) than the academies...from what I have seen. If you are contract or scholarship, you do summer trainings, same as the academies, and you get comissioned just like all of the academies. I loved The Citadel...makes a man out of you. SAVE THE MALES!!!
about a third of the students go into the military, but going to the citadel doesnt get you any kind of special privilege, just a little more experience in leadership
thanks, my Teachers son went to Norwich and he said he didnt want to commit to nine years after he graduated. i thoght was 9 was a lil accesive, do you go to Citidel?
i want to go in for the Airforce, how about you, you have a facebook, and if you get into citadel i will give you my friends name (i have only finshed freshmen year in highschool :(

Warwalker999 3 years ago
so would you say it's harder to get into WP because it's free? Or are these schools well balanced as who they pick

Warwalker999 3 years ago 2
why would that make sense if VMI was made before West Point? Am I mistaken?
EversmanSAT 3 years ago
Yeah, WP was founded in 1802, Citadel in 1842
Warwalker999 3 years ago
For the record-
VMI- 1839
The Citadel- 1842
USMA (West Point)- 1802

Hey! I'm looking into the Citadel, but wasn't sure how it compared to the other Military Academies? Can anyone answer that question?
bdaravens 3 years ago

Jurassic0Al 3 years ago

SAVE THE MALES!!!
blueheadcrazyguy 2 years ago
you're a 2nd Lt. if you contract. it's optional.
armstrongw5 4 years ago
about a third of the students go into the military, but going to the citadel doesnt get you any kind of special privilege, just a little more experience in leadership
