@mcai9mh3 Thats the height of ignorance. You have no control over who your parents are either, should you not be proud of them?? If they do certain actions? So why then not be proud of the fact you were born into a proud country, with a rich culture and strong history? Your arguement is the moronic one sir.
Tell me then, why be proud of Ireland? Its a economic basket case that cant manage its own affairs, was unable to assert itself in order for independence under the control of a foreign power (some of the country still is) for most of its history. Its people are ridiculed around the word for being stupid and drunk. What has IReland achieved? NOTHING. What has it invented? NOTHING. What has it contributed to the world? A bit of Poetry? Is that the best its people can do?
@mcai9mh3 And as regards your comment about our economy. Ireland was hit by the world recession, just the same as most other nations on the planet were. I am living here all my life, and have no trouble at all making a decent living. Have you ever been to Ireland out of interest? We dont need a strong Military we're a peaceful nation not involved in any wars. If you think the power and size of a nations Army defines it's contribution to humanity, then that says a lot about you. Your a fool.
Well seems that Ireland have crashed a lot further than our neighbours. (I am Irish by the way) A peaceful nation? More like a cowardly one. I think its what you do with that army that defines a contribution to humanity.
@mcai9mh3 Some of the best writers in the world were Irish, some of the best play writers in the world were Irish, the Submarine was invented by an Irish man. radiotherapy was invented by an Irish man, the Beaufort scale was invented by an irish man, the portable defribrillator was invented by an Irish man....I could go on but I think thats your ignorant assumption already long laid to rest. Whup-te-do submarines and defibillators - WOW, thats really giving the Germans a run for their money. When Irish people get all poud it reminds me of these ridicolously nationalistic ex-soviet states. Its just embarrassing.
@mcai9mh3 Ok so first we invented nothing....now after being proved wrong you intend to try and dismiss the things we did do? haha have you got no shame? This is truly amusing. Ireland shares nothing in common with any x-soviet states, not that there is anything wrong with them I'm unsure where your even attempting to go with that. Crashing a lot more than our neighours? I think you'll find thats standard for a Nation that has less than half of there populations, and land mass. Please think.
@mcai9mh3 We're far from cowardly, if you care to do your own research you will find that the Irish Army has done more peace keeping than most other EU members. But please feel free to laugh and reply by saying ''peace keeping is no big deal, there all useless cowards!'' as it seems to be your custom to dismiss things which prove you wrong :)
Im not saying Irish peacekeeping is useless, but it is easy. If our leaders had any backbone theyd do the moral thing and send peacekeepers to Iraq and afghanistan. Its to Irelands great shame that it didnt fight the nazis, and no we sit idly by while genocide happens all over the world. No reason for pride.
@mcai9mh3 And how can a nation of our size and resources possibly fund an army equal to that of the US, or Britain? Notc possible, and it isen't anything to be ashamed about. Our forces are not needed in Iraq, and besides your one of only a few people who actually agree with that situation in the first place. Say what you like about the army and its leadership. Ireland however remains a Nation which has a lot to be proud of. I find it disturbing how little you acknowledge this as an Irish man
Not saying Ireland has to match Britian or the USA, but they should be able to provide 1000 or so troops.
Iraq doesnt need our troops any more, but a few years ago they did. And the Irish people were too busy hating george bush to help out the Iraqi people. Same thing that happened in World War 2. Scrap the selfish and cowardly neutrality and start actually helping civilisation instead of spongeing off it and then Ireland might have something to be proud of.
When I meet a patriotic American its bloody irritating, but at least you can see why Americans are proud. When you meet a patriotic Irish man, its just pathetic. And embarrassing.
@mcai9mh3 i see your giving it loads about irish neutrality. may i point you in the direction of a video on here, entitled : Éamon de Valera replies to Winston Churchill on Irish Radio 1945. this explains why we were neutral during th war, and its logical that we would hold onto that neutrality later in obviously illegal wars and other conflicts. why should irish men and women die so US can get cheaper oil?
@MattiusIV My friends I want to tell you all that mcai9mh3 has been blocked and his last comment removed. I have no problem with debate on my channel or videos, nor arguement .However I do have a BIG problem with people trashing something they know NOTHING about, especialy when all there arguements are proven wrong and they continue to spout out childish insults. Actually it isn't. The national socialists of Germany, fought the same international bankes who enslaved their people and becoz they won ww2, they have written the history and now are doing to the rest of the west (stealing the worlds capital) what they tried to do to Germany.
Any research into the holocaust will show you it is a lie, to demonise the Germans and make the victors and their international bankers always use it as a hook to get away with anything

in the modern world, as the current recession and their stealing of the worlds wealth now proves. Ireland did it's best to stay out of a war it could ill afford both economically and for the good of this nation to get embroiled in.
Our leaders saw who were the real baddies and were threatened with re-invasion had they given any more help to Germany, that is why they also helped the allies- the zionist lackeys.

@mcai9mh3 why is it devisive? are you maybe confusing patriotism with xenophobia? by your logic its wrong to be proud of anything you didnt actually decide , as in, family, how you look, your personality, if you speak a second language fluently because a parent does, among other things? what exactly is OK to be proud of then?
Racist, racist, racist. Your hysterical witch-hunting tactics no longer cow people in silence. People can be proud of their family. If people have parents who did noble acts, then one can decide not to value such acts and not place much value on those acts and the kind of noble people such noble acts came from, and thus not be proud of them.
Or one can value all the noble acts of ones ancestors and know that such potential lies within them also- if one values ones ancestors
and the acts of nobility- struggle, sacrifice, shedding of blood and sweat so that their children and childrens children could live on in better situation. And to know that such struggle was passed on and carried on from generation to generation faithfully- then in the gathering of all that picture- there is a pattern that has been passed down simply by virtue of genetic heritage and blood
Thus the pattern lies within the descendant for the potential of such greatness to continue-->
Therein lies the ability to be proud of ones family, nation, tribe, race.
And yes I am proud of my family, tribe, nation and race. It has passed down and struggled and sacrificed to give the world the civilisation and greatest civilising influence the world has ever known.
The working class poor Irish people who did 90% of the fighting, were treated like slaves after independence. Ireland was not ready to go it alone in 1922.
@socia888. the 1916 men were not heroes, at least not their leaders (especially pearse). while 90% of the IVs were in europe fighting alongside the brits against the germans to secure HR (what most people wanted), pearse and co. bought weapons from their enemies to use in a rebellion, WHICH THE PEOPLE DIDNT WANT, against their allies.there is no way of looking at these facts that doesnt make them traitors. (also pearse may have been a paedo)
the people in dublin didnt want a rebellion dickface and they wernt irelands enemies u fag england was ireland enemies for 800 years and still today an the irish that fought alongside the brits in ww1 were promised a free ireland when yhey returned and were lied to so shut ur face u fcking fag.
@rory198 absolute rubbish man, yeah the IV were fighting for absolutly nothing and were treated like shit, Home rule was wanted because it was originally for all 32 counties until redmond in typical IPP fashion yellowed out and gave into the liberals and unionists...the 1916 leaders offered themselves as a blood sacrifice so people like you back then would wake up and realise change was needed
iam a free stater it was the only way forward then ,as the big fellow said it gave us freedom to get freedom na our fault the weahterman1987 that your side shot michael collins down the best leader this island ever seen down on a side of the road ,if that man lived we would be a united ireland now ,england would of wiped us out with in a day if we didnt push the treaty ,your a dev man ,he was the one that messed the island up in the end ,
I was more referring to the Lisbon treaty demeaning the freedom that was so hard won. The simple fact however is that your average Southerner doesn't give a fuck about the North and couldn't care less about the reunification.
@TheWeatherman1987 true, most of us dont and at this day and age, northerners shouldnt care much either about reunification. i mean what would change? -fuck all.
@thefightingirish1919 the ridiculous thing is collins wasnt killed over partition, which wouldve been sorta understandable, but over the fuckin oath of allegiance. partition had been recognised as a necessary evil years beforehand by almost every republican and came into being 2 years before the treaty.
Almost as bad as the Free Staters forgetting us in the North and even their own identity. Imagine compromising freedom that 800 years of Irish patriots' sacrifice obtained giving it to a load of Belgians, Germans and French. A disgrce. How long did it take us to get this far? How short memories Free-Staters have. Traitors.
here here mo chara we just sighned the freedom away that so many people died to get its a shame what irish that we dont even realise what courage it took for those men to die for our rights if everyone realised that this woudent of happened
yes you are right all the men you fought so we the irish can have are own voice and own goverment ,thanks to brian cowan we are apart of the common wealth again the comman wealth of the e.u the republic is dead now the goverment has us back in the land leauge days and the lock outs of 1913 ,democracy has broken down ,the war must start again we must regain the republic
Blood is a cleansing and sanctifying thing, and the nation that regards it as the final horror has lost its manhood... there are many things more horrible than bloodshed, and slavery is one of them!
"They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! - they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace."
I banged a bird a parisian bird a few years ago in my hotel in montreuil listenin to this track, she loved it, me too !!!!!!!!!! Summer time lovin and good oul vibes, tiocfaidh ar la ye wild bastids yez !!!!
He was a bloody patriot you evil heathen! The power he gave the Irish free state which in there wisdom were true with God and let the Church of Rome run the country.Nowadays the modern day Irish have turned and must repent there evil ways to walk with the almighty Father in Heaven.
In WWII Dev supported the British and refused to do a deal to get a united Ireland. He busily interned the his former IRA comrades and let them died on hunder strike, all the time hobnobbing with the Catholic clergy, believing they could get him into heaven. I hope God was just on Dev. Collins belittled Pearse but without the Easter rebellion no man could have mobilised Ireland against England IMHO. Collins et al piggybacked on Pearse and their realism betrayed true Republicanism.
@taywil64 dev interred ira men because if he couldnt be seen to control ireland, britain or US would have invaded, look up USA invasion of ireland in ww2.they had a backup to invade from north. thats the only reason the north stayed british, ireland has and always will be, neccessary to britains defense because of its geographically strategic position. are you sggeting pearse's memory was tarnished by collins et al?
Pearse was an adolescent and walked about the then district of Dublin, near his home on what is now Pearse Street (Dublin city). His sister Margaret Pearse wrote about it in a book entitled the Home Life of PH Pearse; see also Ruth Dudley Edwards Triumph of Failure. He could not pay his bills before he died, after his death his estate could not meet the financial demands made on it. When other people did they usually can pay their debts. Scoil Eanna struggled along under various headmasters.
the problem i have with these claims is that for some reason every one in dublin knew he was a crossdressing childrapist and god knows what else ,but the brits never used it as a reason to arrest him even though it would violate many laws.
dubbigot You should read a little. Senator Margaret Pearse's tome contains the autobiography about Pearse's meanderings dressed as a woman! The book is available by ILL/ Aside from the 1932 edition, there is a paperback edition dated 1978[?]. Dudley Edwards gives citations in her book. No-one, aside from you, has raised the issue of Pearse's possible sexual tastes! It was a taste and as such not an arrestable offence. 1/2
And I never said the Brits used it as an excuse to arrest him. Perhaps you confuse him with Roger Casement? But in future it is best to consult the sources if you wish to be taken seriously. And his estate could not pay his bills. He dies in debt. The joke in Dublin was those who then mourned him were those he owed money to! But that too is not a crime in itself. 2/2
everyone knows casement was gay im not confusing them at all, homosexuality was illegal at the time as was crossing ,and i never mentioned sexual tastes.
You wrote: [Pearse was a] " crossdressing childrapist and god knows what else ,but the brits never used it as a reason to arrest him even though it would violate many laws". You, not me, referred to what can only be described as Pearse's tastes in such "matters." Personally, I think he never touched a child and his poem about the little boy of the red lips was purposefully distorted. 1/2
But the Brits never made an issue of it. At times many teenages experiment with clothes but is is only a fad.
I judge Pearse by his ideals which were far higher than those who were about him eg De Valera and Michael Collins, not to mention the contemporary racketeers and murderers of Sinn/Fein IRA. 2/2
Literary Ireland condemned his poem on the little boy of the red lips. Thomas MacDonagh had cautioned Pearse about how some critics may deliberately misrepresent the sentiments of the poem. Pearse was a committed Catholic and a daily communicant and no fair-minded person can have anything but admiration for Pearse as an educator and teacher. .
i always recognise pearse as the first president of the irish republic, his odd alledged behaviour is unproved and irrelevent to me , i think he should be recognised for what he unknowingly achieved along with his commrades who also had no comprehension of what they were achieving but galantly laid their lives down for.
I think you underestimate how Pearse worked through the IRB and his political writings to create the mood that would emerge after 1916. I agree with you it was impossible to foresee what would exactly emerge, but practical men, Connolly, MacDonagh, Plunkett, etc. were confident enough to follow Pearse after O'Neill's countermanding order re: Easter week. To be a literary man does not exclude one from having political sharpness, read P's works.. Dev put his own political ambition top of the list
i'm not underestimating the president at all, he was a master of detail and word ,this is obvious in his oration at ''O'Donavan Rossas" graveside.each word and punctuation mark was placed so well that this speech is ,,,,,,,as far as i'm concerned, more recognised than Robert Emmet's dock speech{my opinion} and the fact that he actually kidnapped Connolly to ask him to help out in the upcoming rebellion is proof of his commitment and ambition.
He also was practical about logistics. BTW in 1908 Scoil Eanna was founded in Renalagh and later moved to Rathfarnham. Two stamps were issued last year to commemorate the school (which closed in 1932) and tey may be bought in the GPO.
ODRossa speech pivotal. But his other political tracts were significant too. Then he moved to the proclamation of the Irish Republic with some assistance from the other signatories. For want of typefont the bottom half of the proc is slightly different in style.
also noticable is the use of smaller letter ''e'' in places , another letter ''e'' is upside-down in the last paragraph, the copy i have is a lot smaller than original and i cant notice the slight difference you refer to but will check it on a full size someday.
There is a copy of the proclamation in the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street. Also, the Pearse Museum has been restored to its original state and is well worth a visit. There are some womderful original memorabilia of Pearse, although the Pearse papers are in the National Library of Ireland.
i seen the one in kilmainham last summer but god knows when i'll be back again, the gaol has chaned a lot since i'd seen it in the early 80s with regards to the museum, the old museum was the floor of the main wing [victorian] , i believe it's mostly in the collins barracks museum now, but it's still a must see place for everyone.
But it is worth saying Pearse was a Dreamer. I admire the man for his Courage, and Vision...but he was a total Dreamer. He beleived everyone in Ireland in 1916 Hated British Rule, and would hale the Rebels as heroes. Which obviously proved not to be true(at the time) You needed Realists, and poltiical stratagists such as Collins, and Valera, to make the Republican movement work.
De Valera funnelled money from US bonds into his own account and set up the Irish Press. he sold a whiskey factory to a pal. He let IRA men die in the Curragh. Collins was a manipulator of men who sought unarmed soldiers in their beds. Give me the dreamers anyday.
@darrin42 I suppose you would call the rebels troublemakers then, and just ridicule their ideals which after all go to help any kind of rebellion and which needed all the help, idealogically and practically as well as military, that it could get.
He wouldn't have been hailed as a hero for nothing !
True, Yet Valera ruled Irish Politics for 50 years, Ended the Irish Free State, created the Consitution. And Collins fought a successful war against a force 100 times more powerful than his own, brang the Brits to the negotiation table, And founded the Irish Free State...While pearse....led Men into a hopeless battle and achieved nothing. I am not belitting the man, as I said before I admire him greatly. However a movement needs realists.
darrin42 Recent Irish historiography has debunked many myths. One may admire certain men but to close ones eyes to their failures is fanatical. For De Valera's destruction of Ireland's economy read JJ Lee's works. By 1921 Irish volunteers not Dev or Collins had endured in their efforts. Collins did indeed lead the war but he also served his own interest. Dev never served anything else. No rebellion had ever secured such a successful objective as 1916 when Pearse paved the way for independence.
Agreed. 1916 was the Foundation if you will, from which the Modern Republican movement was founded from. Witohut 1916 the War of Independance would likely not have taken place. Valera was a politial Oppurtunist, who was out for his own goals just as much(or more) than Irelands. And Collins was a great Soldier, fully commited who died before his time. They were realists, but without Pearse's dream, their reality could not have been Realised. You see it is all connected.
Indeed it is all connected. Revolutions are complex movements and successful ones are fascinating. I find the praise for Dev takes away from Pearse's contribution. Dev could not have stirred up Ireland as Perase had done. Collins, perhaps I have been hard on him, died young and so he may have expressed more of Pearse's idealism had he lived. Yet it was the Fine Gael party which took Ireland out of the Commonwealth not FF, something I cannot understand given Dev's republicanism.
Home Rule was well on its way by 1914 and Northern unuonists wanted their own state. Churchill gave away what he wanted, and only that. Britain had many other problems by 1921 Ireland had fallen down the list.
its not that he's gay. It's that his some of his poetry and writings gave off the distinct impression that he was a paedophile and in love with young boys. He also had reall deluded visions of blood be spilled for ireland, he was a bit crazy, passionate as hell though. Someone should make one on Eoin MacNeill love that fella.
This video is a fabulous piece of work with great images and a great choice of song. Does anyone know who wrote the song and when, or wh the singer of this version is? The Pearse Museum is re-opening in November. You should visit, It looks fab. And so what if he had a few gay urges?.
Pearses's sexuality is open to opinion, to some. Like Casement and current Irish politicians... And the IRA represent his legacy to Ireland 1973-2008...
Let us as Irish people not be "bullied" into voting the Lisbon treaty in. Many people were shot by the establishment of the day for trying to gain freedom for Ireland. We should not throw it all away. I always get suspicious when our Government and our media are at one. I thought the media is meant to be objective showing both sides of any argument. This campaign is so one-sided and that is why I am voting no.
t wasn't the British or the Orangemen who put down the Fenians or Parnell (or the Scottish). It was the Pope, the same who honoured Margaret Thatcher --not Bobby Sands. Why? Because, like Pearse, they spoke the language of the pagan. For the same reason as by the Bull Laudabiliter he gave Ireland to Henry 11. The Pope believed he owned Ireland because the people were Christian, and he made it a Fief of the Roman See. If you don't believe this look at the webpage 10 on irish-criminology dot com.
Gra - really love this! I love Padraic Pearse, I'm glad you got this up here! I can't wait to go back home to Dublin; this made me feel like I was back...thanks!
Padraig Pearse, what a great and highly unestimated man(poet, rebel, gaelic scholar)undoubthly without his courageous stand for freedom, the Republic of Ireland would not exist today, thanks for reminding us of his cost and sacrifice
Brilliant song about a hero of Ireland !

MattiusIV 1 year ago
@MattiusIV
Or one can value all the noble acts of ones ancestors and know that such potential lies within them also- if one values ones ancestors
cont.
ULAattacksIRELAND 4 months ago
@MattiusIV
and the acts of nobility- struggle, sacrifice, shedding of blood and sweat so that their children and childrens children could live on in better situation. And to know that such struggle was passed on and carried on from generation to generation faithfully- then in the gathering of all that picture- there is a pattern that has been passed down simply by virtue of genetic heritage and blood
Thus the pattern lies within the descendant for the potential of such greatness to continue-->
ULAattacksIRELAND 4 months ago
@MattiusIV
Therein lies the ability to be proud of ones family, nation, tribe, race.
And yes I am proud of my family, tribe, nation and race. It has passed down and struggled and sacrificed to give the world the civilisation and greatest civilising influence the world has ever known.

@socia888. the 1916 men were not heroes, at least not their leaders (especially pearse). while 90% of the IVs were in europe fighting alongside the brits against the germans to secure HR (what most people wanted), pearse and co. bought weapons from their enemies to use in a rebellion, WHICH THE PEOPLE DIDNT WANT, against their allies.there is no way of looking at these facts that doesnt make them traitors. (also pearse may have been a paedo)

Collins et al piggybacked on Pearse and their realism betrayed true Republicanism.
taywil64 3 years ago
@taywil64 dev interred ira men because if he couldnt be seen to control ireland, britain or US would have invaded, look up USA invasion of ireland in ww2.they had a backup to invade from north. thats the only reason the north stayed british, ireland has and always will be, neccessary to britains defense because of its geographically strategic position. are you sggeting pearse's memory was tarnished by collins et al?
MattiusIV 1 year ago
Pearse was an adolescent and walked about the then district of Dublin, near his home on what is now Pearse Street (Dublin city). His sister Margaret Pearse wrote about it in a book entitled the Home Life of PH Pearse; see also Ruth Dudley Edwards Triumph of Failure. He could not pay his bills before he died, after his death his estate could not meet the financial demands made on it. When other people did they usually can pay their debts. Scoil Eanna struggled along under various headmasters.
taywil64 3 years ago
the problem i have with these claims is that for some reason every one in dublin knew he was a crossdressing childrapist and god knows what else ,but the brits never used it as a reason to arrest him even though it would violate many laws.
dubbigot 3 years ago
dubbigot You should read a little. 1/2
taywil64 3 years ago
And I never said the Brits used it as an excuse to arrest him. Perhaps you confuse him with Roger Casement? But in future it is best to consult the sources if you wish to be taken seriously. And his estate could not pay his bills. He dies in debt. The joke in Dublin was those who then mourned him were those he owed money to! But that too is not a crime in itself. 2/2
taywil64 3 years ago
everyone knows casement was gay im not confusing them at all, homosexuality was illegal at the time as was crossing ,and i never mentioned sexual tastes.
dubbigot 3 years ago
dubbigot
You wrote: [Pearse was a] " crossdressing childrapist and god knows what else ,but the brits never used it as a reason to arrest him even though it would violate many laws". You, not me, referred to what can only be described as Pearse's tastes in such "matters." Personally, I think he never touched a child and his poem about the little boy of the red lips was purposefully distorted. 1/2
taywil64 3 years ago
But the Brits never made an issue of it. At times many teenages experiment with clothes but is is only a fad.
I judge Pearse by his ideals which were far higher than those who were about him eg De Valera and Michael Collins, not to mention the contemporary racketeers and murderers of Sinn/Fein IRA. 2/2
taywil64 3 years ago
i said that in a sarcastic manner ,i dont believe he was and my point was ,if he was and everyone knew ,why did nobody say anything at the time
dubbigot 3 years ago
Literary Ireland condemned his poem on the little boy of the red lips. Thomas MacDonagh had cautioned Pearse about how some critics may deliberately misrepresent the sentiments of the poem. Pearse was a committed Catholic and a daily communicant and no fair-minded person can have anything but admiration for Pearse as an educator and teacher. .
taywil64 3 years ago
i always recognise pearse as the first president of the irish republic, his odd alledged behaviour is unproved and irrelevent to me , i think he should be recognised for what he unknowingly achieved along with his commrades who also had no comprehension of what they were achieving but galantly laid their lives down for.
dubbigot 3 years ago
I think you underestimate how Pearse worked through the IRB and his political writings to create the mood that would emerge after 1916. I agree with you it was impossible to foresee what would exactly emerge, but practical men, Connolly, MacDonagh, Plunkett, etc. were confident enough to follow Pearse after O'Neill's countermanding order re: Easter week. To be a literary man does not exclude one from having political sharpness, read P's works.. Dev put his own political ambition top of the list
taywil64 3 years ago
i'm not underestimating the president at all, he was a master of detail and word ,this is obvious in his oration at ''O'Donavan Rossas" graveside.each word and punctuation mark was placed so well that this speech is ,,,,,,,as far as i'm concerned, more recognised than Robert Emmet's dock speech{my opinion} and the fact that he actually kidnapped Connolly to ask him to help out in the upcoming rebellion is proof of his commitment and ambition.
dubbigot 3 years ago
He also was practical about logistics. BTW in 1908 Scoil Eanna was founded in Renalagh and later moved to Rathfarnham. Two stamps were issued last year to commemorate the school (which closed in 1932) and tey may be bought in the GPO.
ODRossa speech pivotal. But his other political tracts were significant too. Then he moved to the proclamation of the Irish Republic with some assistance from the other signatories. For want of typefont the bottom half of the proc is slightly different in style.
taywil64 3 years ago
also noticable is the use of smaller letter ''e'' in places , another letter ''e'' is upside-down in the last paragraph, the copy i have is a lot smaller than original and i cant notice the slight difference you refer to but will check it on a full size someday.
dubbigot 3 years ago
There is a copy of the proclamation in the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street. Also, the Pearse Museum has been restored to its original state and is well worth a visit. There are some womderful original memorabilia of Pearse, although the Pearse papers are in the National Library of Ireland.
taywil64 3 years ago
i seen the one in kilmainham last summer but god knows when i'll be back again, the gaol has chaned a lot since i'd seen it in the early 80s with regards to the museum, the old museum was the floor of the main wing [victorian] , i believe it's mostly in the collins barracks museum now, but it's still a must see place for everyone.
dubbigot 3 years ago
But it is worth saying Pearse was a Dreamer. I admire the man for his Courage, and Vision...but he was a total Dreamer. He beleived everyone in Ireland in 1916 Hated British Rule, and would hale the Rebels as heroes. Which obviously proved not to be true(at the time) You needed Realists, and poltiical stratagists such as Collins, and Valera, to make the Republican movement work.
darrin42 3 years ago
De Valera funnelled money from US bonds into his own account and set up the Irish Press. he sold a whiskey factory to a pal. He let IRA men die in the Curragh. Collins was a manipulator of men who sought unarmed soldiers in their beds. Give me the dreamers anyday.
taywil64 3 years ago
@darrin42 I suppose you would call the rebels troublemakers then, and just ridicule their ideals which after all go to help any kind of rebellion and which needed all the help, idealogically and practically as well as military, that it could get.
He wouldn't have been hailed as a hero for nothing !
josparkes1 1 year ago
@josparkes1 Sorry what? How would I think this? I uploaded this video, I think it's fairly obvious I;m a republican.
darrin42 1 year ago
True, Yet Valera ruled Irish Politics for 50 years, Ended the Irish Free State, created the Consitution. And Collins fought a successful war against a force 100 times more powerful than his own, brang the Brits to the negotiation table, And founded the Irish Free State...While pearse....led Men into a hopeless battle and achieved nothing. I am not belitting the man, as I said before I admire him greatly. However a movement needs realists.
darrin42 3 years ago
darrin42 Recent Irish historiography has debunked many myths. No rebellion had ever secured such a successful objective as 1916 when Pearse paved the way for independence.
taywil64 3 years ago
You see it is all connected.
darrin42 3 years ago
Indeed it is all connected. Revolutions are complex movements and successful ones are fascinating. I find the praise for Dev takes away from Pearse's contribution. Dev could not have stirred up Ireland as Perase had done. Collins, perhaps I have been hard on him, died young and so he may have expressed more of Pearse's idealism had he lived. Yet it was the Fine Gael party which took Ireland out of the Commonwealth not FF, something I cannot understand given Dev's republicanism.
