Sept 2009 I was stranded for 1 day and 1 night at the Schipol Airport. I met some nice people there, esp guys;) It was nice though but when you're that tired, it's sometimes hard to appreciate the beauty of Schipol. And it's true the world meets at the airport. However, what love is harnessed at the airport, stays at Schipol airport. That's why I can easily call it!!! E X P E R I E N C E

If you go to Canada to Pearson ( Toronto ) it's even higher. Pearson is the most expensive airport in the world as taxes and landing fees are concerned. I go there if I have to, but I rather take a local plane from Buffalo to either Washington or NYC or perhaps Newark. But in Western New York, Toronto is only 1 1/2 hours away

Actually, I was in this airport last month. It seems I had more frustrations and stress then you, because I had to go through 4 airports, and I had a canceled and changed flight. I also went through Poland from Berlin by car as well. But anyways, this is how it goes for me. Berlin, Germany to Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Boston, MA, USA to Houston, TX, USA. I was in all airports each for about 4 hours and in Amsterdam for about 6 hours.

Agreed Schipol truly is the best airport in the world I was there in May 2008 for a trip to Addis Ababa. A 3 hour wait, but very pleasant.

It sounds different yes, but it is verry clear so that all non native english speakers can understand the message, unlike the US airports, when I was at O'hare I had a hard time understanding the messages because there was an enormous accent. So it sounds strange because they try to be of service to all passengers and not just native english speakers

i could live at the airport...the best part is just going to the area of the airport that looks like a mall and you can go shopping if you have the currency...i would love to work at a store in the airport.

there was one time on the way back home when i made my pit-stop at schiphol i had to wait 6 and half hours for my connecting flight. i thought it was going to be bad, but it went by so fast because it was so fun.

I received a better exchange rate at the hotel where I stayed. I cashed just enough for a taxi ride in then exchanged at the hotel. Hope this helps!

Working there isnt really fun, I used to work for HMS Host at Amsterdam airport, but I left becasue of crap service and they really use you, make you come to the airport for an 8 hour shift, bit tell you to go home after 2 hours, because the lines where just five customers long and then it is cheaper for them to send you home and let lines increase to 7 people, resulting in angry costumers all day long :S

Other then the employers it is a really nice place though

Thanks for posting this. I was there about six weeks ago. Had an eight hour layover both ways from the States to Cairo. They have a GREAT sandwich shop on the "E" ? concourse upstairs next to McDonald's. Had a sandwich with cheese, lettuce, tomato, some unknown dressing, on a mediterranian roll. I've tried, unsuccessfully, to recreate it here but just isn't the same. I think the bread is what made it unique. Liked the VanGough mini-museum too.
