It may be slightly pretentious, but then again, most modern Indian/Bollywood films have been unable to get rid of the clutches of the clichéd style/direction/plot structure seen in so many art house films abroad and in India.
I hardly can understand why so many of the people here would complain about this movie being boring/crap/shitty. So alright this movie isn't the best,it's hardly close to being bad. Just because the movie doesn't have a song every other 15 minutes,girls baring more skin than is needed,and mind numbingly dumb plots,like at least 90% of the Bollywood movies.Being able to get past your own thick mind and watch this movie with a more critical eye is better than just throwing juvenile labels at it.

@neilchomsky Jaane Bhi do Yaaro is one of those films that did not require any music for its plot.and succeeded. Look, my point is not that, music in a bollywood movie is like Banana in a Banana split, but for the growing audience interested in bollywood films, music (well the singing and dancing) is to kinda show as a cultural mantelpiece. I like Aamir Khan's films because they make you understand what a method actor is! He has redefined acting and some people argue that. Cheers!

One more thing I cannot critisize or praise this film because sadly I have not seen it yet, so therefore you would not be able to take my word for my opinion. Wow you guys really need to grow up. I liked this movie. I will admit I was really excited for it and it didn't turn out to be exceptional like Rang de Basanti was, but still, it was a pretty decent movie.

i am SRK fan i watched this film and loved it. but i felt great similarities in hollywood flicks and this one. kiran rao actually is transforming hollywood into bollywood. its just not about making such a film whose rating doesnt come down from 8/10 on imdb, but its about making film which shows a picture of true bollywood face. otherwise if b'wood's plans are to move from traditional stuff to h'wood type film-making then dhobi ghat is excellent step towards that destination.
the difference between SRK and aamir is that SRK is making 'bollywood's own style' progress keeping song & dance and traditional stuff alive so that bollywood goes to outer world instead of hollywood style overpowering bollywood... aamir is introducing hollywood style of film-making in india. if he wants to make such films then he should remember hollywood is enough to give such films. we can go to hollywood for such work.. aamir should promote bollywood style. this is great film but h'wood type

I have to say the movie was absolutely amazing and quiet impacItful. Both Parteik and Monica have acted fabulously while Aamir was, well, Aamir! Honestly, the movie leaves you a lot to contemplate about society, fate, injustice and so on.
I'd definitely recommend going to the movies to watch it, however if abstract movies aren't your cup of tea then please don't bother. It was surprising how many people mocked the film by laughing at some of the most heart-touching scenes.
@aymenz200 Well she was Arun's (Aamir) inspiration and love. Her role was more abstract in that she was presented indirectly in the form of video diaries. On the whole, the movie delves into various levels in Mumbai's social hierarchy. With Yasmin, she's the innocent outsider who becomes a victim of her forced marriage. She slowly loses her innocence and happiness because that's what the world does.

@chiragatronacious and as far as song & dance is concerned that has ALWAYS been very crucial part of b'wood films... tell me those b'wood films which succeeded and didnt hv songs/dacne... are there any??? it means people want song/dance at least songs in background like MNIK... if you make "different film" it means either you havnt made film for "your" audience or you want to change typical style of film-making... in both situations the film "cant" be called typical b'wood film but NOMINALLY..!!

@neilchomsky Jaane Bhi do Yaaro is one of those films that did not require any music for its plot.and succeeded. Look, my point is not that, music in a bollywood movie is like Banana in a Banana split, but for the growing audience interested in bollywood films, music (well the singing and dancing) is to kinda show as a cultural mantelpiece. I like Aamir Khan's films because they make you understand what a method actor is! He has redefined acting and some people argue that. Cheers!

@Syshtematik redefined acting??? is acting what u meant there? then you should knw there is no discovery related to "acting". u cud hv said that his productions are exemplary and yes they are! i admit... and i love his films he produced and starred in. but the way OSO was listed among bakwas films by i dnt knw who was what i felt bad. OSO had songs/dance but it was quite different from TMK type films. as far as dhobi ghat is concerned, i knw dancing wud hv ruined this film but it needed more!!!

@neilchomsky OSO was not a bakwas film but personally (and this is my own opinion) I was not a fan of that movie. One more thing I cannot critisize or praise this film because sadly I have not seen it yet, so therefore you would not be able to take my word for my opinion. I only came to see these comments to understand if the film is worth watching. Not to be biased by any of the comments but it seems this film has (like all films) mixed reviews

MNIK again chosen for Berlinale 2010, Rome int'l film festival and screened in China, first b'wood film to be screened there in years!!! if you cant locate difference between a typical b'wood film and dhobi ghat then its ur close-mindedness and favor for this film particularly... Wow you guys really need to grow up. I liked this movie. I will admit I was really excited for it and it didn't turn out to be exceptional like Rang de Basanti was, but still, it was a pretty decent movie.
All you Indian people want is song/dance/item numbers and feel-good endings. Life is not a bed of roses like most movies portray. Face reality for once. Like is shown in this movie.

Yes, I love this melody too. Composer is Gustavo Santaolalla, Argentinian. He win 2 Oscar for Brokeback Mountain and Babel's music.
I recommend his band - Bajofondo Tango Club. This guy are fantastic and genius.

@chiragatronacious well TMK, Housefull are pieces of shit. but didnt aamir tell you whats difference between hollywood and bollywood? dhobi ghat is quite hollywood style film. no songs/dance, no interval, no single hero/heroine pairing (or double etc). its typical hollywood style film... i liked it but people in sub-continent would need years to accept this kind of cinema... for that matter aamir fails as far as south asian audience is concerned. he suxeeds for western audience though.

Gustavo Santaolalla is an Argentine musician, who has scored for films such as Brokeback Mountain,The Insider, Amores Perros, Collateral, Babel, The Motorcycle Diaries, etc. He has also composed for the famous film, Into the Wild (2007), directed by Sean Penn, and now the soundtrack for this film Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) .

i am SRK fan i watched this film and loved it. but i felt great similarities in hollywood flicks and this one. kiran rao actually is transforming hollywood into bollywood. its just not about making such a film whose rating doesnt come down from 8/10 on imdb, but its about making film which shows a picture of true bollywood face. otherwise if b'wood's plans are to move from traditional stuff to h'wood type film-making then dhobi ghat is excellent step towards that destination.

the difference between SRK and aamir is that SRK is making 'bollywood's own style' progress keeping song & dance and traditional stuff alive so that bollywood goes to outer world instead of hollywood style overpowering bollywood... aamir is introducing hollywood style of film-making in india. if he wants to make such films then he should remember hollywood is enough to give such films. we can go to hollywood for such work.. aamir should promote bollywood style. this is great film but h'wood type

I have to say the movie was absolutely amazing and quiet impacItful. Both Parteik and Monica have acted fabulously while Aamir was, well, Aamir! Honestly, the movie leaves you a lot to contemplate about society, fate, injustice and so on.
I'd definitely recommend going to the movies to watch it, however if abstract movies aren't your cup of tea then please don't bother. It was surprising how many people mocked the film by laughing at some of the most heart-touching scenes.

@aymenz200 Well she was Arun's (Aamir) inspiration and love. Her role was more abstract in that she was presented indirectly in the form of video diaries. On the whole, the movie delves into various levels in Mumbai's social hierarchy. With Yasmin, she's the innocent outsider who becomes a victim of her forced marriage. She slowly loses her innocence and happiness because that's what the world does.

@chiragatronacious Great comment. Indian movies are enjoyed but not Indian Cinema. But, movie industry is more of a Business than a depiction of an art. Yeah, Dhobi Ghat is a great film, must watch. Love the simplicity and it's complete reality and it's realistic. Some people mistake extremal to reality, for instance Life in a Metro, Slumdog Millionaire etc.

The Motorcycle Diaries composer Gustavo Santaolalla is doing the soundtrack. I also think that movie might have inspired Kiran Rao to make Dhobi Ghat. Check out the trailer for Motorcycle Diaries, one of my best movies every.

Yes. Of course there must be a good story behind it too, but that doesn't mean we take out the dancing and songs.
