  • In my opinion yes Haha I'm even commenting this from my EVO shift Haha

  • Damm Idk what to pick , I love the Htc Sense..But like I love the big screen on the Epic . But then again like Htc Sense Grabs me more cause I love it so much, There is so many things and customization you could do with Htc .Im thinkin I'll go for the Shift

  • Take the f off shift and what do you get. Galaxy S forever

  • @ican1992 CLEAVER AND TRUE EPIC ROCKS

  • EVO shift is way better than epic :)

  • @littlemanwsd123 NOT REALLY

  • Shift all day bitch

  • @DROCK576111 SHIFT ALL NEVER

  • Get your facts right it dose not have a 1 gb of inturnal storage dumb ass and that is with both of them

  • Samsung Epic 4g. Mine was 1647.

  • I do like the keyboard on my girlfriend's epic better than my shift, the number row on epic is really nice and the keys pop out more. The keyboard on shift has more of a touchpad feel to it, but I do like the more compact size of the shift(fits better in the pocket) and it also seems to run faster than the epic. If you have bigger hands however, the epic's keyboard is better suited for you, but you can't go wrong with either...both great phones! :)

  • I have the epic I just went from theevo 3d to it and I like it much better other then the minor lag it is wondeful and I don't think that I would get ride of it

  • I have epic my while screen is cracked and it works the same :)

  • Since the Epic and shift have both come out with 2.3, do you think you will be giving an update to this video to show the comparison now that they are on even playing fields? Or do you think that this it is a nominal difference between then and now?

  • @woobieweibel Interesting but it almost certainly won't happen. The Samsung Epic 4G is nearing the end of its manufacturing, so it will soon be no longer available. FWIW, a couple days ago I upgraded a Samsung Galaxy S 4G (for T-Mobile) from Android 2.2.1 to 2.3.6. The Quadrant score went from 1000 to 1350, which I thought was impressive. The Galaxy S 4G is a close cousin to the Epic 4G.

  • This video was "epic"

  • Bob, thank you so much for this review, this is exactly what I needed to decide between the two. Since the Epic now runs on 2.3, I think that'll be my choice. Sincerely though, very helpful and very appreciated.

  • They're both now running on Android 2.3, so my vote goes to Samsung Epic 4G.

  • I got 1700 on the benchmark with the new gingerbread update!! :)

  • Shift all day

  • which does better gaming?

  • @MrFireballXD The epic 4g comes pre uploaded with Asphalt 5 (cool racing game) and it known to be great at gaming phone..

  • Wait, Epic is running 2.2. whats the condrant test on that?

  • Wich fones beter samsung epic or evo shift help!!!?

  • @Th3Batman561 Did you watch the video? Your question is answered in the video.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • It's a no brainer, Samsung Epic 4G is flat out better, Evo Shift is a poor man's version of the EVO.

  • @idiotrun1997 poor man's version? If you mean that by price they both cost the same at sprint. And I prefer the shift to the evo anyways, the shift is a nice compact version of the evo :)

  • @mcrxxcammy Wtf? The EVO Shift is just a watered down version. It doesn't have a 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor anymore, it's downgraded to 600 mb or something, it lose its front facing camera, awesome Kickstand, etc. Specs wise, it's just worse than the original Evo. Evo 4G and Epic 4G is a better comparison. If only if HTC could make a decent slider for Sprint...

  • @idiotrun1997 also to give you an idea of the stability of a second generation snapdragon. the evo had a maximum overclock of 1.12 GHz. the evo shift has been overclocked as high as 2.1 GHz. the evo shift overclocks like a son of a bitch and 1.5 is actually being cooked into most roms because it's rock stable and doesn't affect battery life.

  • Im traden my evo for diz cuz i den had it for too long and its old it came out in '10 and its almost '12

  • @ZackLOL1 Both of these phones came out in 2010 as well I believe.

  • @DevinG1992 The HTC EVO Shift was introduced in January 2011.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • The evo 4g has a faster processor even if it is slower in clockspeed. I believe the evo shift is directed at people who want functionality over features. I like how its compact size apposed to the popular "brick" styles of a lot of smart phones.

  • I debated between the two before buying an Epic. The problem with the HTC EVO Shift is flat out that it isn't an "EVO." No front facing camera, less processor power and a lot of other features are missing. I really hoped I'd love the Shift, but head to head, I had to go with the Epic and haven't regretted it.

I hope HTC does one day make a good EVO slider, but the Shift is just a lesser model HTC phone and nothing like the amazing EVO.

  • @ccrosbie33 Actually, the shift is still one of if not the fastest androids out there. It's more efficient. Doesn't matter if it has less CPU. Yes, it lost the front facing cam, yes, it's a smaller screen, but it has the same amount of pixels. It also loses the HDMI output, which to be honest, most people wouldn't use although it is pretty cool. I couldn't really decide between the two, but I decided I had to have a physical keyboard. It really depends on how badly you need that keyboard.

  • @Blackllama13 The Shift is pretty speedy for sure. I guess I was looking for a keyboard phone with the most bang for my buck. I love my Epic but the Shift isn't bad. Still, I'd love to see a slider that retains all the bells and whistles that the EVO has.

Of course now that Sprint has the iPhone HTC and Samsung are going to have to raise the bar even more to keep the carriers attention and promotion. Sad.

  • @ccrosbie33 Yeah, if they could take the evo and add a keyboard without removing any features it'd be awesome. It'd also be pretty big though haha.

  • @ccrosbie33 i agree i dont understand why the makers treat the keyboard smart phones differently

  • Despite the fact that the shift isn't the greatest in performance when I get an upgrade this fall I think I'm still going to look at it. When the epic released it was a really fast physical keyboard phone but (its still sort of a brick in size) for some reason companies are shying away from making a really fast physical keyboard phone that isn't massive(at least for sprint). I guess they don't think there is a market for it but I would be all over a phone that had those features.

  • Hold on, 384MBs == 512MBs?!

  • @theif519 If you are referring to the number show by Quadrant as the RAM, I've learned that it always gives a number lower than the actual number. I'm not exactly sure why that is, but that's the way Quadrant works.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • ya who wants that because at&t is very poor in 3g-4g speeds where Verizon's LTE network is so much better and sprint is the worst 4g/3g network so once again who wants that-andy

  • besides verizon, what 4g network do you believe is best?

  • @chjones31 Are you asking me? My personal experience is that both Sprint and T-Mobile's 4G networks have about the same speeds. If you're in a good spot for Sprint and/or T-Mobile, speeds are nice and make downloads a breeze on a cell phone. Neither has given me the data speeds I've seen on Verizon, however. I haven't really seen 4G speeds from AT&T, although I've seen nice 3G speeds of 3.4 Mbps on AT&T.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • Which Phone is actually ures it doesnt have to be one of these but which one do u use

  • @DDJProductions1 I've been carrying around two phones lately: The EVO 3D and the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, The Galaxy S 4G is unlocked, and I've been using it on AT&T because that works best for me in certain locations. The EVO 3D as been coming home with me for a couple of months, mostly because my wife loves the 3D camera. Both are also really good phones.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • @wirefly thx

  • I went with the Samsung Epic. The Super AMOLED Screen is like 10 times better lol even the keyboard.

  • i have the evo shift and i absolutely love it. they are both amazing phones so whichever you pic ur gonna get an awesome one, its a win win situation here

  • @yasmin4786 I agree!

    Bob at Wirefly

  • The screen was the decision maker for me, so I got the Epic. Kinda wish I went with the Evo Shift because the better 3rd party development support, but SyndicateROM Frozen 1.2 for the Epic makes this phone run smoother than the dual-core tablets. Still waiting for CM7 (CyanogenMod 7) support, because I love the customization options. Quite happy with the Epic, until someone stole it. Looks like I'll get to try the Evo or Evo Shift soon (along with CM7).

  • Have the epic its a great phone hope sprint makes a epic 2

  • @Jmelpegues epic 2 comes out in August :) per Sprint rep

  • @heart2heart108 You mean the Samsung Within? xD

  • @heart2heart108 EPIC 2?!?!?! :O

  • @wirefly keep an eye out for my username Bob, you should be seeing it a lot more! :)

  • In my opinion I would way rather have the EVO Shift 4G than the Epic 4G. One of the main reasons is simply because its an HTC phone and I'm an HTC guy so...yeah. EVO SHIFT!

I love your videos Bob, I think I might be addicted ;) keep 'em coming (I have the HTC EVO 4G)

  • @godlovesugly208 Well, that's what makes horse races. Thanks for the nice comment!

    Bob at Wirefly

  • so does the epic not have an alarm clock?

  • @AndesineLabradorite The Samsung Epic 4G has an alarm clock, but it is not as obvious as the one in the HTC EVO Shift.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • wirefly is the shifts keys rubber? because i hate rubber buttons

  • @monkeyboi71121 I'm pretty sure the keys are plastic, but I no longer have the EVO Shift to check. Maybe someone else will stop by and give a definite answer.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • I'm gonna get the epic. BTW it now has android 2.2

  • @MiD8643 Yes, Android 2.2 is now on the Samsung Epic 4G, and that makes a good phone even better.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • @wirefly Hey Bob, I've had the Epic 4G for a couple of months now and to tell you on Android 2.1 it was much better in terms of battery life. The new battery life on 2.2 is horrible and I've been looking at the Evo 3D. You should to a comparison on both to see which one would be better as those seem to be one of the best phones Sprint has on its market...

  • @chipsandcheesecurlz Bummer about the battery life. You've probably done this, but you should check to see what apps are drawing the power. Also, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G (for T-Mobile) is a close cousin of the Epic and it has an upgraded battery rated at 1650 mAh. If that battery will fit in the Epic (it does fit in the Vibrant), it will give you longer battery life. There are strong rumors about a new version of the Epic, so stay tuned.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • @MiD8643 But the EVO shift has android 2.3..the epic took a while before it even got 2.2,

  • Radioshack has the Shift for FREE with 2 year plan.

  • Bob, would you say that if cost is a factor that the Shift is definitely comparable and if it isn't, in your opinion the Epic is the winner? By the way, as many have said, amazing review, really. It is a tough decision to make honestly. Also, I am extremely impressed with your professionalism and unbiased opinions, I will always go to Wirefly in the future. I also think you should link to your secondary test on Smartbench since the Epic came out on top there, and that was before 2.2.

  • @XelestialDragon The HTC EVO Shift is a nice phone, but I really prefer the Epic. At the moment, the Epic is $30 more than the EVO Shift... not much, really. The Epic has a beautiful display and a better keyboard, and it also has a front-facing camera if you want to do video chat. However, if you don't have that $30 now (and I've been there), you don't want to go hungry over a cell phone.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • @wirefly Bob, thanks for the response. Actually for me, I'm only at a one year upgrade on Sprint and there is a $100 difference. I am willing to spend the extra money but I am not fully convinced that the Epic is $100 better. On the other hand, it is a 2 year contract and I don't want to make the same mistake again.

  • Awesome, Schmackdown Video. You Have Really Out Done Your Self. Keep Up The Good Work.

  • I enjoyed the video.

  • The processor in the epic is superior, as is the gpu. The difference in the quadrant scores is from os inconsistencies; 2.1 vs 2.2. The manufacturing process of the Shifts CPU makes it equivalent to the Evo 4G's 1GHz at only 800MHz. Still, neither Evo's CPU is on par with hummingbird. Also, the Epic should be getting 2.3 soon...

  • Well now the Epic 4G is being shipped with Android 2.2... does that put it far ahead of the EVO Shift? What's the update on the Quadrant test? I am definitely a QWERTY guy, and I am reeeeally torn between these phones. Please help!

    Thanks Bob, great videos :)

  • @asteroidsex Once the Epic 4G was updated to Android 2.2, then my clear preference is for the Epic 4G. You get about 50 more points in Quadrant and I really like the display and keyboard.

    Thanks!

    Bob at Wirefly

  • Samjunk

  • I started to get pissed off because Bob who is supposed to be a professional, kept saying "Schackdown" instead of " Smackdown". it wasn't untill i looked at the title of the video and realized he was saying that on purpose.

  • @TheBIGJJR The legend around here is that the word "smackdown" is trademarked by some organization. So we decided to call it "Schmackdown," which I think is more funny and fitting.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • Also, application wise, the epic comes with all the widgets you described from the evo... This was a biased review IMO.

  • The Evo Shift has a Qualcom MSM processor capable of overclocking to 1.2-1.6ghz

Just Like the Htc Touch Pro & Diamond, Need I say does the Epic have a rooted kernel?

  • @TrigunCole A "rooted kernal" sounds painful... I hate going to the dentist!

    Bob at Wirefly

  • @wirefly Are you under some sort of legal obligation to not talking about rooting phones, installing custom roms, etc.?

  • @klaymen No, we have no legal obligation in that regard. I personally have not rooted a phone, although I've updated a few from one version of Android to another. That was always using the official process, however.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • Samsung epic fail. Shift is better in every way except camera

  • epic 4g is better the evo shift lags and doesnt work as efficiently as the epic 4g just i had the evo shift for a week and i hated it the screen resoultion was bad and it lagged so i swapped mine in for the epic and it is much better in speed and reliablity and who doesnt want a nice amoled display.

  • ALSO , at the begining you said each phone has internal 1gig of memory... then you later say they both have 512mb ! ha. ummm... ?

  • at 8: you are talking about the CPU's you messed up.... you said the EVO shift has a second gen, faster processor... the EPIC 4g is the faster one, it is the rev2. Just thought you should know. you need to make a annotation for this mess up !

  • @TylerTron21 the evo shift has a rev 1 of the second generation processor

  • evo shift my bro has da epic so shift

  • epic is so much better of a phone, the other 4g phones from sprint are gay

  • will the epic 4g automatically update to andriod 2.2 when it's available, or do you have to buy another phone that has the 2.2???

  • @BrittanyClassified The Android 2.2 update for the Epic 4G is out there right now. If your phone has 2.1, you will get a notification that Android 2.2 is available. Touch that notification and it will begin the update. That's how I understand it, anyway.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • Epic 4G isn't as attractive, and has that typical round and bulky Samsung style. EVO SHIFT FOR LIFE!!

  • My HTC EVO has an 8 MP camera and the quality of images is OUTSTANDING (except a clunky zoom tool, the quality of images is better than most digital cameras out there of similiar MP size). I'm betting the EVO Shift has the same outstanding pics its big bro EVO? How's the picture quality between these two phones? How's the video qualtiy compare? The audio record on the EVO is very good, too. So how do these items compare between the HTC EVO Shift and Samsung Epic 4G?

  • @Roobah Good questions! I'll look into doing a video comparison video.

Wirefly has videos comparing both the EVO 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G, as well as a comparison of the EVO 4G vs. the EVO Shift. However, we don't specifically compare photo/video quality among these phones. While there's some interest in video/photo comparisons, there's not enough interest to make this a high priority. Lots of other things on my plate at the moment.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • Unmentioned item: EVO Shift DEFINITELY allows tethering, what about the Samsung Epic? Tethering on 4G is my sole source of Internet for the past 7 months and it is faster than anything else out there. For me, from now on, FREE tethering HAS to be an option, which is why I went with SPRINT. I KNOW HTC EVO will tether b/c it works fantastic on my HTC EVO. I like the side USB plug on the Shift... that's an improvement over the bottom plug on HTC EVO.

  • i had the samsung epic 4g origionally but it stopped charging out of nowhere so i switched it out for the htc evo shift 4g the next day

  • The guy totally forgot to mention the Epic has a front facing camera and can be used for phone/video conversations! HUGE!

  • The guy totally forgot to mention the Epic has a front facing camera and can be used for phone/video conversations! HUGE!

  • EVO SHIFT BABY!

  • The epic has Super Amoled, not amoled, a huge difference.

  • Im going to get one of this for my birthday im turning 15 in a few and i wanna now which one i should get im an avid texter i dont call alot i listen to alot of music and i browse the web or should i get the new evo 3D?????

  • there is no comparison the epic is wayy wayy wayy better evo shift is shit

  • there is no comparison the epic is wayy wayy wayy better

  • i was thinking bout these phones but the epic just seemed alot cheaper made then the shift. so i got the shift instead and i love it xcept it doesnt hve a front facing camera but i still can do video calls

  • i was thinking bout these phones but the epic just seemed alot cheaper made then the shift. so i got the shift instead and i love it

  • i have the samsung epic and i love it! the keyboard is so easy to use and doesnt lag. the screen is also very nice. i have updated to 2.2 and it works very well with some nicer new features except that they took away da ability to open multiple web pages, now u can only open 4 ugh. most ppl go for the quantity(extras) than the quality(fast data speeds) but the epic was a good choice. one thing u didnt mention is that the epic has a front facing cam n the evo shift dont, which is dumb of htc

  • does anyone notice that in every video wirefly does in the intro he always moves his hands by saying schmackdown

  • Samsung phones are reliable and last you a long time and HTC is the big name out in the phone market right now so do you want to have reliable or the bigger name thats is what it comes down to

  • @Enimenism i have yet to own a reliable samsung phone lol.

  • This is the best phone interview. Thank You

  • the epic looks sexier hands down

  • Umm dont know what people are talking about Froyo was released, I still have the .zip on my sdcard, sprint pulled it back but really I havnt had any issues with the 2.2 update if anyone wants it hit me up and ill post a link. This is for the Samsung Epic.

  • Thanks Bob for sharing the comparisons. But I still dnt know which to get. My bf has the HTC EVO n its great! I still want something different. I think I go more for the Epic cause of the memory. I'm still thinking. O n by the way (previous comments) ...what the hell is an 11 yr old kid doing with so much power in their hands? The parents are idiots. Get him/her a prepaid phone to see if they can be trusted. Neways. Epic. More likely.

  • @lajane123 Both the Epic 4G and the EVO 4G are terrific phones, and the Epic will improve when it gets the impending Android 2.2 update. (The EVO 4G already has Android 2.2.) Sprint will have some powerful new phones coming in the next couple of months... official announcement should be made in the next few days.

    Bob at Wirefly

  • @wirefly Apparently the 2.2 update for Samsung Epics has lots of problems and they're recommending people hang tight and wait for the 2.3 update. What a joke. When is coming, and will it be any better? Why does Samsung suck so badly for updates? It's really an obstacle for them.

  • Thank you so much, this is exactly what I've been looking for - I wanted someone to sit down and compare these two phones & explain to me all the little things that make them different. Very helpful! Thanks

  • Im looking for a new phone in the sprint market, right now i have the rumor touch and might i add, not a great phone(the touch screen is terrible and it turns off and on all the time-but it is kinda old) Anyways, I really like both of these phones. Im leaning more towards the epic because of the front face camera as well as the keyboard seems to slide easier and not look as fragile,is this true? Also, which out of these two phones, is more durable?

  • I'm an Epic 4G owner, I am pleased with my Phone. Never had any problems with it. It always did the job for me. So therefore no complaints. Yes I'm bummed out about the whole android 2.2 update not being out yet, but I don't see whats the big deal about it.The funny thing is that before you know it all these phones are going to be outdated and something better will arrive. Oh yeah and you forgot to add that the epic has both front and rear cameras. the Shift doesn't.

  • Excellent review. Great job, Bob!

  • i really wish i could get an epic that had the evo's software

  • Which phone gets better reception in very low service aeras?

  • Correction on the video, the shift only has 512MB of internal memory.... I just bought one.

  • htc all day i may never buy another phone if it isnt htc i still have the htc hero and i love it but the evo shift is like a massive upgrade to it and so is the evo plus it has a keyboard on it cant wait to get mine :)

  • The Epic is coming out with thee Android 2.2 on February 21st, 2011. That's what I heard Sprint say. And I hope that it's true.

  • the Evo Shift 4G is a decent phone. I have it, but the biggest issue I find is opening the slider the power button is garbage. It wore out and became wobbly within a week. I am 3 phones later and I decided to just keep it as there is no other option other than the Epic.

  • Wow, the 4-inch Amoled display looks HUGE next to the Evo Shift's screen. That being said, when I place my Evo 4G next to the Epic 4G, it's the other way around.

  • I've always had samsungs and they feel too light and plasticy. I know that htc feel like they're better quality and and heavier. Does anyone agree/disagree? In 3 weeks I get to upgrade and finally get rid of my old instinct. Any suggestions on what to get? I wish sprint had the iPhone.

  • @408HONDAK20 In this case, I strongly disagree, I have both the Evo shift and the Epic 4g, The shift is my work phone but in all honesty I rarely use it anymore. It is aesthetically pleasing and feels sturdy, but the epic isn't lacking much there. When you got to the store and check them out ask to use a working version of the epic, the display phones they have are made very cheaply with all plastic parts. Play around on the real thing, you will see why its better.

  • the epic processor is surprisingly inefficient.

this whole thing is a hard fight.

There's the better UI vs being able to see the screen outside, more out of the box storage vs more potential storage (if you want to pay the extra money for a 32GB card), then there's the whole keyboard thing like, does anyone really need a number row and a smiley button? also the slide's dpad should be nicer for gaming. Punctuation row would have been a different story.

  • when does the epic get the upgrade?

  • @bballingfool17 it got the upgrade a few weeks ago but it got tooken back because there were some issues

  • EPIC 4G

  • Also, which version of android either phone has to me is irrelevant because I root and put custom roms on every android phone I buy anyways.

  • Great comparison bob! I already have the Samsung vibrant on Tmobile's network. My brother has the shift on sprint and If i had to make a decision I would definitely choose the epic 4g. The AMOLED screen in my opinion makes a huge difference Not to mention I think a 5 row qwerty keyboard is better than 4 for obvious reasons. Too bad the vibrant doesn't have a slide out keyboard. :(

  • @Tylertag2381 yeah I mite get the epic cuz its better I guess lol

  • I like the Evo shift more but the memory card part is killing me! Guess I can take the $50 difference between the two and buy it anyways...

  • This review... has not helped me decide one over the other.

  • 16 GB micro SD card thats easy to take out YAY!!! =D 2GB thats hard to get out boooo =|

  • Ok right now I think I'm going to get the htc evo shift because it's android 2.2 have better widgets and I love htc sense but I like the keyboard better on the epic though so if the epic gets 2.2 before feb23 then I'm get that

  • @tylertag2381

I have the Epic 4g I'm just about ready to give up on ever getting an update that's truly up to date. Samsung is falling so far behind that the update is outdated already , I would go with the HTC or even Google Nexus if you want to have current software .

  • @5thhorsman K thanks for the advice

  • I like both phones. I'm going to get one of these on Tuesday...but..Im just not sure which one!

  • Hey guys can u help me out! I love both fones. Nd I txt a lot talk a lot listen to music a lot nd go on the internet! So wat fone fits me?!?! Help me out

  • @opticpnoy1585 me too idk which one to get rite now im probably going to get thesamsung epic because i like the keyboard better and the screen is better but the shift has some better widgets and it runs 2.2 so im stuck to but the epic looks better

  • Well my last phone of 2 years was a Samsung and it was a great phone except for the software and the T9 auto correction crap that Samsung stuck with it. The hardware was great, the Samsung software that made the phone work sucked, and was glitchy and buggy.

I'm goin with HTC. They're focused soley on their phones... Samsung has a lot of other shiznit to worry about.

  • I don't know which phone to get. I am an avid texter and make a lot of phone calls. I like the epic but I really believe that samsung does not care about the galaxy s devices so which one do you prefer in a day 2 day use I use the Htc Hero and I hate if sprint doesn't announce a phone I like on February 7 I will have to pick either epic or shift.

  • samsung epic 4g is the best freakin fone ever i vote for the epic because the epic has super amoled, better ketboard, it looks nicer, front facing camera, and who cares if it still has eclair what is the difference besides the only thing different between froyo and eclair is froyo can move the apps around. and it doensnt matter if the gps doesnt work because i am eleven years old i cant even drive yet so theres no point of having a gps. epic wins . it was the most anticipated fone of the year.

  • @muscleman1999 The fact that you're 11 and are allowed to have a phone tells me that your parents are idiots. I mean MAYBE a pre-paid basic phone... but an Epic with a full data plan? Idiots. Also, 2.1 doesn't have Microsoft Exchange support, 2.2 does. But you wouldn't care about that either, because you're 11.

  • What is the frame rate for the video recording on the EVO Shift?

  • @akacuyo1 30 fps.

    Wirefly

  • so i have the option to get either phone, ive asked the people at sprint what to prefer but all they say is that well since the epic comes with a 16g memory card its the better deal. the processor and stuff does not really matter to me i just want a phone where i can play angry birds and check twitter without too much hassle. i like htc's auto correct feature so i didnt know if samsung had something similar. i like both keyboards but im iffy on the spring loaded one. what do you think?

  • I'm a noob at this...what's a quadrant proccessor thingy? And if you have more, like how the Shift does than the Epic, what does that mean?

  • @Nikko0527 Quadrant is an app that you can download for free from the Android Market. It is used to test the speed of the processor and memory inside the phone - the higher the number, the better. We are also testing phones with another app called Smartbench 2010, which is also a free download from the Android Market. It's just another way to test the phone and give a measurement of its performance.

    Wirefly

  • @wirefly Oh, so the higher the numbers, the better?

  • @Nikko0527 Yes, higher numbers indicate that the phone is faster internally. Faster internals mean that the screen will operate more smoothly and apps will run more quickly. Those are all good things.

    Wirefly

  • Im stuck between these two and the original evo.

I use the internet a lot, i text a lot and i listen to music a lot and my palm isnt a app machine so i might like apps too.

  • HTC EVO Shift 4G is like purple kush n the phone bussnies

  • @LILE1010214 purple kush yeaaaaaaaaa boy

  • EVO SHIFT 4G RULES just like the granddaddy EVO 4G

  • @wirefly the code isn't valid today and I am making my purchase today. is there any other code that will work?

  • @easybucket19 Sorry, we took the code down after two days and a couple hours. We might have some other promotion going, such as free activation. Take a look before you make your final decision.

  • its clean that the evo shift is the winner

  • Thanks for this video. Good comparison. I just "soft-bricked" my Epic 4G trying to self upgrade to Froyo and I was just going to use that as an "excuse" to buy the HTC... HOWEVER in my opinion, Sprint and Samsung's shenanigans aside concerning Froyo and updates, the Epic still beats the HTC. I'll just "Odin" my soft-bricked Epic back to stock and just root and be happy. Thanks for the comprehensive comparison.

  • Wow. Excellent review. Much clearer then other reviews I've seen.

The real question though; Is the Android 2.2 update (if it ever comes) going to boost the benchmarks over that of the EVO Shift? If so, then will it fix the the Galaxy class's memory leaks and improve battery life?

  • @PlasmaJunky Thanks for the nice comment!

I expect that Android 2.2 will improve the Epic 4G's Quadrant score by 300 points or so, and bring it in at or above the EVO Shift's score. I've just started testing with the Smartbench 2010 benchmark app and it shows higher scores for the Epic 4G than the EVO Shift. I will post a head-to-head comparison of the two later today.

  • @wirefly Dude if you root it and put a custom rom etc.. the highest ive seen is 3600 and average is 2500

  • I thought the Evo had a 4.3 touch screen? AND I HATE KEYBOARDS ON TOUCH SCREENS, that defeats the purpose

  • @Jerz1983 The EVO 4G has a 4.3-inch screen, but the EVO Shift has a 3.6-inch screen.
