Spellbinding!! I saw this performance as a young music student , when Hans Swarowsky turned out all these wonderful conductors. Thanks for posting this, it sure brings back memories I treasure.
Youtube stays amazing... A Hans Swarowski video... The man was teacher of many well known conductors like Claudio Abbado, Albert Rosen, Jesús López-Cobos, Bruno Weil, Mariss Jansons, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Zubin Mehta...
(continued from my previous comment): This complete scene can be found with other artists (for example, the one with Gwyneth Jones) but I want to find this performance, with the great Hans Hotter and the perfect Maria Kouba.
This eventually leads to Jokanaan's great speech in which he exhorts her to seek out the one man who can save her, the man in a boat on the sea of Galilee. The scene ends with his terrible, repeated curse on her ("Du bist verflucht!") as he descends again into his underground confine. I have tried to find this complete scene on the web, without success.
Can someone please, please post the continuation of this clip? This clip cuts off Salome's response: "Wer ist das, des Menchen Sohn? [cut off here] Ist er so schoene wie du, Jokanaan?" (cont'd on my next comment)
The j of 'Jokanaan' (=John)is sounded as y; in 'Salome' every vowel is sounded, i.e. not excluding the final e. Intonation of accent may be more debatable, but I think the heaviest stress falls on the first syllable in both cases. I'm no expert so other answers would be welcome!
PS I mean, there at least three conceivable pronunciations may be relevant here: ?Aramaic/Hebrew, German, and English; and of the latter, English English and American English. I think in English 'Salome' can also be pronounced with the stress on the 2nd syllable, and the final e sounded as 'ee', rather than as in German 'ay'.

too bad the play-back is so obvious on the video
Hotter is terrific as usual, too bad Narraboth is such a light tenor, should be more heroic in my taste...

You are absolutly right.Narraboth is pathetic.Voice and acting

The critics at the time said he sounded more like God himself than John the Baptist. I think the staging had something to do with that.

Hotter was about 51 when he recorded this. Not many heldenbaritones can sing like that at this age.

Thankyou for uploading this excerpt. Wonderful to hear such a bright forward sound from a Jokanaan. Brilliant singing from them both.
